  1. Are you talking about Minden, Texas Harry? Best hamburgers in Texas since Rose's in Dallas closed. I listened to the '88 NT - Tx Tech game on KNTU in Minden. The signal kept fading in and out but it was coming in loud and clear when an extremely excited Bill Mercer announced that a last desperate pass into the end zone by the Tech quarterback was incomplete. (I think it was '88). No one knows where Minden is except for the people who know where Minden is. The town is so small both city limits signs are on one stick and the local hooker is a virgin. Bada bing, Bada boom! Sorry about that. The hamburgers are in a little store by the post office, but I can't think of the name.
  2. I have experienced the same thing when people realize I'm an NT fan. I always tell them about the program and Apogee and invite them to come up and see a game. Some of these comments have come from what appear to be high school kids and thats especially encouraging.
  3. I don't understand and it makes me sad. Man, I miss the original Pit days.
  4. Sounds about right to me although, with the exception of Li'l Abner and Snuffy Smith, I have never found hillbillies all that amusing. I have heard they may name it the Dumbass Quacker Bowl, but that may be a rank canard.
  5. Youth is over rated. Amos Alonza Stagg (who coached against Odus Mitchell in the Optimist bowl) was 95 when he quit coaching. I'll admit, that IS old, but I will take proven experience over youthful exuberance any time. Todd Dodge was young.
  6. I agree, but at least we don't have to introduce our fans to our players.
  7. I agree, but then he really looks like he doesn't want to be anywhere, The guy makes Calvin Coolidge look charismatic.
  8. THE JUNCTION BOYS was a fun read, but contains several irritating and glaring mistakes.
  9. I can't remember how many kids Abner Haynes had, but I was fortunate to know a daughter of his while teaching at W.T. White High School. She was a very nice, warm and lovely girl - and very proud of her dad.
  10. I forgot to mention it before, but a real sore spot in the book was Dent's comment about Joe Greene not being recruited by the SWC and having to "settle for North Texas". Even if literally true, it was a thoughtless way to put it.
  11. When we win in September, I would expect the dissatisfaction to increase just a bit. I'm being optimistic, of course, but I'm already looking forward (with trepidation) to that game.
  12. Speaking of Abner Haynes, I was recently looking through Jim Dent's new book, THE KIDS GOT IT RIGHT, on the integration of Texas college football. Jerry Levias was mentioned at least one hundred times while Abner was mentioned perhaps twice. Even players such as Bill Bradley of Texas were covered more than any North Texas black players, although our football team was integrated almost a decade before the SWC recruited its first black players. Although we were a Division 1 team in the Missouri Valley back then, we seem to be no more that an afterthought in Dent's book. There is an interesting piece about our freshman team playing Kilgore JC thats worth reading, but the book as a whole is disappointing and even misleading in some ways. I suppose that is to be expected, however, from a former DAILY CAMPUS, (SMU) writer. We seem to get more national recognition at times from the national media than from within our own state.
  13. If its Trillii, Dodge, Stanky and Buckner who is the other one?
  14. Make that Central High in Little Rock. Interestingly, an attempt was made to integrate Mansfield High a year before Little Rock, but with no enforcement available the students were turned away. If I recall correctly Denton High integrated without incident which was not always the case with other Texas schools who integrated years after Denton. I do recall the Black high school continuing to operate a few years after integration, but at the time many were commending Denton ISD for making integration proceed smoothly. Those were interesting times and if anyone has more details about those years, sharing them would be appreciated.
  15. It was either '60, '61 or '62. My guess is '61.
  16. I want an old fashioned juke box and a dance floor. Now THATS tradition.
  17. Me too, Rick. We should certainly have a photo gallery of famous UNT alumni in the new union going back at least to actress Joan Blondell and right up to the present. By the way, I made that coffee cake not long ago from a recipe in the North Texan. Man, talk about deja vu all over again.
