  1. So are you saying that Philipps missed it w/ regard to Scoggins?
  2. I don't know if there's a player who ever left more on the field for the Miami Dolphins than Zach Thomas. Talk about an overachiever. I know the Dolphins are cleaning house, and I can't blame them too much for getting rid of a player that was dealing with concussions and migraines. But I think he deserves better.
  3. I'm guessing Charlie Brown must really be beefing up if they're thinking about moving him to DT.
  4. Florida State puts all sports teams on probation Feb. 14, 2008 CBSSports.com wire reports TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida State's sports teams will be on self-imposed probation for two years and some will lose scholarships because of an academic cheating scandal, the university said in a report released Thursday. About 60 student-athletes also have or will suffer some loss of eligibility. Two staffers, a tutor and learning specialist, already had been fired. No additional dismissals were listed in the investigatory report. The cheating occurred mainly through online testing for a single course in the fall of 2006 and the spring and summer semesters last year. Florida State officials conducted the investigation with assistance from the NCAA, Atlantic Coast Conference and a consulting firm. The report has been sent to the NCAA, which can still conduct its own investigation and impose additional penalties. Among the corrective actions listed in the report is a requirement for all athletics staff members to attend a four-hour training program titled "Decision-Making in the NCAA Compliance Environment." "We believe that our investigation has been thorough and exhaustive," said Florida State provost Larry Abele, who chaired the investigating committee. "This university and its Athletics Department have accepted responsibility, made changes in the process and systems and imposed penalties as warranted." A school spokesman was not immediately able to explain how the probation, effective Wednesday, would affect the teams. The NCAA's Student-Athlete Reinstatement staff, though, has agreed to a 30 percent across-the-board loss of eligibility for students who came forward and admitted they received improper help with the test. Some of the penalties already have gone into effect. About two dozen of the football team's top players were suspended for the Music City Bowl on Dec. 31 in Nashville, Tenn., where the Seminoles lost to Kentucky. Many of those players will remain suspended for the first three games of the 2008 season. The school also is making changes at five senior staff levels in the athletic department, though the report did not include details on the changes. Former athletic director Dave Hart Jr. departed late last year with a year still left on his contract, but he denied it had anything to do with the cheating scandal. Last week, the school hired former Utah State athletic director Randy Spetman. AP NEWS The Associated Press News Service
  5. Well, if history is any indicator, the students won't vote for increased fees to improve athletics. The question then becomes, Does the administration/B.O.R. sit idly by and let all those schools continue to fly by us as we sink deeper into mediocrity, or do they take the bull by the horns and impose a reasonable fee increase to improve athletics?
  6. They just changed their name from Southwest Texas State. Old habits die hard.
  7. Thanks, stick82. Here's hoping everything goes well with his surgery and rehab.
  8. I have no idea what the official count was. My girlfriend and I were in the middle of a sea of maroon, and at least 3/4 of the stadium looked to be maroon. The Aggies around us were all laughing at North Texas' supposed "home game"--I would have rebutted if I could have, but it looked to me like what they were saying was the truth.
  9. Again, no, no, no! I was at each of the "home" games we played at Texas Stadium from about 1995-98 (?), and none of them were home games. Each time we were vastly outnumbered by our opposing fans, there was very little college game atmosphere (although Army was pretty cool), and overall it felt like an away game. The opposing fans and media really like to lay into that too, when you claim such a travesty is a "home game." When we generally only play 5 home games a year, it's pretty lame to give one of those away. Say what you want about Fouts, at least it's a home game when we play there.
  10. I was wondering if anyone was going to say something. I wasn't that surprised when I heard "her" speak--it seemed to match.
  11. Tom Mason, former linebackers coach at Fresno State. Supposedly from the mouth of (their) JJ, but is being kept hush-hush for a couple days. http://www.ponyfans.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.p...asc&start=0 I'll take Gary DeLoach, myself.
  12. Yes, that's my understanding. But they moved us out of that opening slot because they wanted a higher-profile opponent for a nationally televised game. Edit: From Vito's blog 1/28/08
  13. That's the high-profile opponent they jilted us for? Sure, they're at the top of 1-AA but they are 1-AA. I guess it shows what one win over a major BCS team can do for a program.
  14. I'm impressed. Based on their designs, they seem to have a perfect combination of functionality and aesthetic beauty. I don't know how much our budget will allow for the latter, but I hope at least we can get a loud stadium that gets us close to the action.
  15. Employees' children do not get free tuition. Riley Dodge will be receiving a football scholarship to play for North Texas.
  16. What an asset the Dodges are/will be to the University of North Texas! I'm proud to have them aboard.
  17. In the long run, I think Riley is the biggest get for the program. As for immediate impact, you tend to look to the JUCO guys, and I agree with you that I expect Alonzo Horton to make an immediate impact. He and Eddrick Gilmore at the ends? You've gotta love that!
  18. We did have 6 home games last year, did we not?
  19. Absolutely. This class looks even better than I expected, and I am excited about seeing them play! Thank you, Coach Dodge and staff!
  20. I don't know about that, but I would definitely see us making use of nickel packages more extensively--I don't remember us ever using one last year.
  21. Still some holes to fill in there: Where did Rivals get their information that caused them to report Shorter had switched to Tulsa? Assuming Shorter actually did switch to Tulsa, when? He was "solid with North Texas" Tuesday morning, then reported and confirmed as a Tulsa commit that same afternoon. What persuaded him to switch to Tulsa? What persuaded him to switch back? Sounds like gut feeling and instinct prompted him to choose North Texas in the end, but some of the stuff in the middle doesn't quite make sense. I guess in the end it doesn't matter. He made the right choice, and I'm looking forward to watching him play for the Mean Green.
  22. The number one recruiting class in the country took 13: http://rivals100.rivals.com/commitlist.asp...08&School=2 You recruit according to need. We are progressing from a low-scoring run-based offense to a high-octane passing offense that requires more receivers. And if you watched any of our games last year, I'm sure you saw that we needed speed in the defensive backfield.
