Prodigal Son returns to Texas Tech
MeanGreenZen replied to Christopher Walker's topic in Mean Green Football
This topic is relevant. Carry on. -
Mack does get the No. 1 QB recruit every year (or darn close to it). I admit sometimes I think UT recruiting is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Is he the No. 1 recruit who committs to UT or is he the No. 1 recruit BECAUSE he is being recruited by UT? Mack can only sign 1 or 2 QBs a year, plenty of good ones, especially those who are not NFL prototypes, slip through the cracks (like Manziel or Chase Daniel). My biggest problem is why can't UNT ever find and develop one of these guys?
-
Simms was the No. 1 recruit in the nation who turned into a 3rd round draft pick. While his college career did not measure up to Young, McCoy or even Applewhite (a Mackovic recruit) he still had a college career better than any UNT QB ever other than maybe Steve Ramsey.
-
Do you hold that against him? Shouldn't a great coach recruit backups who can step in and shine?
-
What does that have to do with college football? How many of those played for a national title? Colt would have won one too if he hadn't got hurt.
-
Yeah... Mack Brown sucks at finding QBs. He only landed Chris Simms, Vince Young and Colt McCoy.

Can't wait for an offense that can score!

How is a guy who can't beat out Derek Thompson going to go to another FBS program and play for a year?

First an off-field incident. Then he gets kicked off team for missing a meeting. If he was expendable at Kansas, which is not exactly USC, why would we want to build our team around him? It's not like he was a 5 star player. He is a 3 star player. Wy not find another 3 star player with less baggage?

Yes, I also miss Mean Joe Greene and Brandon Kennedy. Scott Hall was probably the best QB in UNT history!

Coach Wintrich As A Personal Trainer
MeanGreenZen replied to All About UNT's topic in Mean Green Football
You guys should sign up for CrossFit. It is awesome. If Coach Wintrich is working, he should be working with Mean Green athletes. -

Wow! We need to find a way to make ourselves a package deal with them.

Why not just get Marv Albert to do our play-by-play? Or hire Urban Meyer to be our head football coach?

UNT has long term hopes to bring NCAA baseball team to Denton
MeanGreenZen replied to Skipper's topic in Mean Green Athletics
Let's add women's bowling and get this done. I don't think SMU has a baseball team, but UTA has a good one. -
I think Hank and George hit it on the head
MeanGreenZen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
That ASU qb was legit. When is the last time we had a qb that good? Pre-Scott Hall. Pretty impressed with what our staff has accomplished with what they have to work with. Mac inherited talent similar to what June Jones inherited and is doing better than SMU in year 1 of Jones. -
I think this post sums up how I feel pretty well

Rangers were my first love. I am married to UNT. I will be cheating on my sports wife the next two Saturdays. However, if I had to choose between UNT in a bowl game or Rangers in World Series, I would pick UNT. The next two weeks, however, aren't bowl games. -
We've got what we've got
MeanGreenZen replied to The Fake Lonnie Finch's topic in Mean Green Football
North Texas was talented enough last season to win the Sun Belt. The problem was Dodge couldn't coach them up and we lost every close game. McCarney coaching last year's team would have been a contender. This season was always going to be a rebuilding season. -

MeanGreenZen replied to The Fake Lonnie Finch's topic in Mean Green Football
Dodge actually recruited DT's pretty well. We had the best DT pair in the conference last season. The problem is they both graduated and McCarney failed to replace them. He struck out on the recruitment of Ronnell Wright and then wasted a scholarship on Terrell Brooks. McCarney's record recruiting DT's is 0-1. He is going to have to improve greatly in that area to turn this thing around. -
Rick V will be on The Football Show hosted by UNT grad and former UNT beat writer Tim Macmahon (mostly remembered for his over-the-top championing of the Todd Dodge hire) and fellow UNT alum Ted Emrich on 103.3 FM ESPN Radio at noon Saturday to discuss the new stadium and UNT's place in the wild world of conference realignment. Tune in.

Really like this guy as a McCarney project. Great size. Good athleticism. He won't help us next year as he transitions to D1. He won't be getting blocked by 175 pound offensive guards like he saw in Oklahoma Class 2A. These are the kind of guys we need to get in the system and give McCarney two years to develop. Weatherford Back On The Market?
MeanGreenZen replied to H-towngreen's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
Frequency = Severity. This guy is a troublemaker. QB is the one position you need to have a solid character guy at. Recruit future inmates for all the other positions, but the leader of your team should be a solid guy. That's how I would build a team. How many great QBs are also great guys? For every reformed Michael Vick, there are dozens of Jeff George's and Ryan Leaf's (making an NFL comparison): Bad guys who have bad careers (yes, I know both of those guys were good in college).
