  1. DD was belittling UNT long before the winning streak even started. So I'd have to question your explanation. That said, I fall pretty much in-step with what Cerebus is saying. I can not understand why we continue to dismiss the accomplishments of the 01-04 teams. I'd add that the single worst thing about the draw play on 3rd and 15 was not that "we" didn't like the call....but dangit if you ever tried to bring an outsider to a UNT football game in those days---that's tough offensive football to watch if you're not a die-hard. The average joe just isn't going to like watching that brand of football unless there are 80,000 fans packed into a stadium and the energy level, in the stadium, alone makes the experience exciting for them. I give you SEC football (from that same time period) as the best example of that. We were trying to build that energy at UNT, but we didn't have the crowds or game-day atmosphere developed enough to balance out the grind-it-out style of football that we played back then. You could get people to come to games once, but those kinds of calls made it dang near impossible to get them to come back to games if they weren't already affiliated with the school in some way.
  2. I'm right there with on everything but the highlighted portion. Look, I'm one of the biggest Riley Dodge fans you're going to find, but whether or not it's arm strength or bad ball placement or not getting the ball out quick enough--- he's GOT to improve on delivering balls down field THIS (and every, for that matter) offseason. I don't see how completing deep balls is NOT a major weapon that this offense looks to use----we're bringing in speed burners Tyler Stradford and William Cole for the explicit purpose of opening up defenses DOWN THE FIELD. Do we want to get those guys the ball inside of 15 yards and hope their quickness can stretch plays, also? Absolutely....but the biggest thing this offense is missing is the deep threat that forces defenses to back up off the line of scrimmage. I don't remember a SINGLE completion by Riley all year on a ball thrown further than 25 yards (yd markers--not counting distance to sideline) down the field that was out in front of a receiver. Not ONE. I watched Riley, and this offense, in high school and he completed these passes all the time....he almost always threw a rainbow, high arching ball, but it was at least out in front of the receiver....and he had some freaking burners playing WR at Southlake. In college, it's almost like he's not able to make the read quick enough so that he can get the ball out before the receiver is too far down the field. I think there is a noticeable difference in his arm strength from his high school days to now....but he's got to keep getting stronger. I think he'll eventually get there and has the potential to be the best QB we've ever seen in Denton---maybe not the best pro-potential, but the kid is really, really talented---so who knows?. I don't think it's too much, though, to be honest about assessing areas that he needs to improve in.
  3. Sadly, I totally agree with #2. In fact, it's even MORE critical that we have a QB that can get the ball downfield if Stradford and Cole are as advertised. I love Riley's overall moxy and ability to keep plays alive, but if he can't hit a receiver further than 20 yards downfield then he can't really run this offense. Ideally, we'd have a guy who can do both----run and pass. If we're ever going to run that offense that TD mentioned at the start of the season (West Virginia and Oregon), we've GOT to be able to throw it down field to keep teams from loading up the box and run blitzing all game. Do we have any kind of information on how badly injured Riley's arm is? If he's out a significant amount of time in the offseason and cannot lift, it'll be a huge disappointment. ....oh, almost forgot! 3) Spend however much time and energy that is required to FIX OUR FIELD GOAL KICKING!!!! @#$*!!!!!!!
  4. On the bright side...this almost guarantees that Dunbar finishes his career at UNT. One more year here and he'd only have one year (after sitting out one) left if he transferred to an FBS school. I'd guess that's kind of unlikely. So, in a way, we just locked up our best player! As for next season, we're (season ticket holders) kind of between a rock and a hard place. With the new stadium only a year away and after hearing that the AD will honor current season ticket holders for first requests in the new stadium....kind of makes it hard to drop them for the 2010 season. I never thought the day would come when I seriously considered not renewing.....
  5. You could put 4 Div. 1aa schools up there and I'd expect us struggle to win any of them....esp. if you had the good Southland conference schools in that list. ...and I don't mean to say that to provide shock value.
  6. Seriously, Mods....put a bleeping moratorium on enforcing the cuss rule. I'm going to lose my mind.
  7. Yep, this thing does occur all the time....but not usually every year for 3 years are multiple assistants fired like has been done at UNT under Dodge. Dodge has now fired 2-3 of his "closest" friends. To me, this situation stinks.
  8. So what happened....yesterday you were more confident that Dodge was gone than you were of Mendoza being fired or of bringing DeLoach back. You've got a pretty solid track record as far as insider information goes. What happened? Or is this not over yet?
  9. Can we get the mods to put a 48 hour moratorium on enforcing the 'No cussing' rule? Unbelievably, assuming this report is true, our administration has found yet another way to make our situation even more bleak. Of all the options out there, we choose the one that makes our HC look the most spineless. Awesome. The last 4 years have taught me to NEVER, EVER question how things could possibly get any worse. Unbelievable.
  10. Yep, at this point I really don't care what decision is made.....AS LONG AS A FREAKING DECISION IS MADE! The longer this drags out, the more it really looks like UNT is trying to work every option in order to get rid of Dodge---ie, we really want to fire Dodge, but only if we can get a specific coach hired in his place...otherwise, we stand pat and bring him back. These are the things that people are thinking--recruits, current players, fans, opposing Sun Belt coaches, outsiders, etc. The ONLY way we can get out of this now without blowing up our recruiting year is to fire Dodge.....or give him an extension (which ain't happening!).
  11. A 50% chance that we fire the last of the high school guys?? So Ford would be out as OC. What "experienced" offensive coordinator would want to come in here at this point?? It'd have to be a personal friend of Dodge or someone promised the HC job later on, I'd think. This situation is pretty bleak, and taking away the last bit of control Dodge has would basically be publicly castrating him. That option, to me, smells an awful lot like the terrible situation going on with the Washington Redskins this year.... who knows?....it just seems that too much time has passed and the damage is done. At this point, I can't fathom Dodge being back next year.
  12. That sure doesn't sound like a vote of confidence from RV, though. You've got a head coach who publicly questions whether or not he'll be returning and all you get from the AD is a "we'll meet to evaluate the season"? I don't know, maybe RV has no intention of firing him....but that doesn't explain why would Dodge openly question it and risk whatever fallout there might be within the team? A questionable motivational tactic that rarely works---esp. with only one game left on the season. Does he not want to return?
  13. I really don't know why we're debating whether or not to keep Dodge. Just from his own recent comments, it appears that the decision has already been made. What reason would he have to allow himself to be quoted by the media as saying that he didn't know if he'd be back for a 4th year?? Even more telling is that we have yet to hear anything from our AD that reassures the situation. This is a 'done deal' as Tasty very apply put in his crazy charades thread.
  14. That was ingrained in us by DD....and then the complete whitewashing we've been taking in those games with Dodge as HC. It was not always this way and doesn't have to be....we just need to actually have a little success in those games and opinions will change.
  15. Outstanding reply. 99% of the posters on this board want whoever is coaching our football team to win. How some mistake this is beyond me....maybe too new to the board to distinguish when a troll has come along?---which these days(win less and it's amazing how much less other school's hate is for you) is few and far between.
  16. I am a huge Riley fan, but he needs to sit after the last 2 games. The Army game was a disaster for him. Watching him, I can't tell if he is just flat out not looking for the safeties on his deep post throws or if he just doesn't see them. He's an unbelievable scrambling talent, but he needs more time to develop his arm and his field vision before he needs to start another game.
  17. I agree with this. I imagine that we'd see a 'Super' D1, before they broke off completely....and I highly doubt that the NCAA doesn't go along with them if pressed hard enough.
  18. guide shows OU vs. TTech football....
  19. Good post. Absolutely agree with all of it. One question, do you think that the speech was already given before this last game?...ie, we're playing a 3 game season. Have a winning record in these 3 or else. I do---er, I hope so. It certainly sounded like it from the quotes in the DRC by TD and Riley.
  20. Wow....very interesting quote indeed. Coupled with Riley saying "put the past in the past and just play these next 3 games"....it sure sounds like an ultimatum has been issued.
  21. Good to see. Hope this is indicative of the feelings inside the locker room, as well.
  22. It wouldn't just be disappointing, it'd be flat out shocking. There aren't many more "plugged in" folks than Harry. I'd venture to guess that if Harry is talking like this, it's becoming more and more commonly talked about inside the AD. Maybe I'm wrong....but I doubt it. Also, in regards to the post about WKU going after Jeff Bower....you've got to think that has RV really antsy. Maybe the two men weren't close (I really have no clue), but you have to wonder what his thoughts on getting Jeff Bower in here would be? I'd, personally, be thrilled beyond belief....and I have no connection to USM other than having watched them whip our butts in the NO bowl.
  23. Ok....so we have a weak dline. What are we doing to help the rest of the defense? We almost never blitz on passing downs and prefer to just try to cover and make a tackle....but when the opponent is throwing the ball more than 10 yards downfield (as ULM did) why not try to bring different kinds of pressure?? We cannot expect to out man every team's oline.
