  1. ---Houston's attendence from their own fans was a problem in the SWC somewhat. It hurt them and the Big-12 accepted Baylor instead of the state school Houston.
  2. ---There is talk in West-Texas of trying to get some them out here and giving them jobs and a new start... Many have absolutely nothing to keep them in N.O. area now.. no home, no job, no anything.... We have the lowest unemployment rate in Texas out here and with the oil situation like it is there are jobs for those willing to work. A effort is being made to find and relocate some here with jobs. ---Jobs and a temporary place to stay is what is needed most to get many of these people started back to a normal life. It will be a while before paid jobs start appearing in South Louisiana again even in clean-up and reconstruction. ---I understand there are some students entering this area as well.
  3. The biggest contributer to the present group in 2000 was "the Enron people", they even provided him an airplane during th campaign much of the time.. Can't find the BBC article that states that anymore but this is close. Article is from Britian, not politically biased. His VP was president of Halliburton. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/1780075.stm
  4. That is the informed spirit.... Sounds like Rush... when you don't know who to blame just say pagan socialist liberals... ---Washington and Jefferson et. al. were actually liberals ... they supported change, no King, let people govern themselves. Few other countries did that then. .... Later letting women, minorities and non-landowners vote were considered liberal ideas at the time as well. I suppose abolishing slavery was too. The term conservative means resist change when talking social issues. Get informed and don't just spew off someone elses goofy thinking. ---Conservative financially is totally different... don't spend what you don't have...... only 6 of the last 25 years has the US had a budget surplus, ... during the 90's when the other party was in control, the other 19 years we overspent our budget.. Learn truth, not talk-radio garbage, you have a good college degree....Think!!
  5. Picture of Shell's MARS Drilling Platform in the gulf near NO. There are many more. I don't even want to guess how many 100 of Millions dollars were lost by the storm-- including production and oil-field repairs... (not easy in the middle of the Gulf) ... There are many more platforms in similiar condidtion. This is one reason gasoline prices are increasing. The email I received with it..... _______________________________________________________________ For those of you not in the oil industry, this is a photo of a production platform (Shell Oil) taken 8/30/05. It is in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico, ‘called ‘Mars’ field (Mississippi Canyon Block 807- water depth 3,300’). It is one of the highest volume fields in the U.S., not just the offshore Gulf of Mexico, but the U.S.! It has produced more hydrocarbon than any offshore Gulf of Mexico Field, yet has only been around since 1996. It has produced to date 624 million barrels of oil and nearly 1 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and was producing 300,000 barrels of oil per day and 400 million cubic feet of gas per day). By the way, it not supposed to have that ‘collapsed’ look to it. This is just one field hurt by the recent hurricane. It will be a long time before it is repaired and back on line. America just got a lot more dependent on foreign oil. If you want to donate a few hundred million dollars for the platform relief fund, or just send a sympathy card, please contact Shell Oil. If not, maybe the higher gasoline prices will enable Shell to rebuild it in 12 to 24 months. http://beastsbelly.blogspot.com/2005/08/ka...s-platform.html _________________________________________________ The Hurricane means higher gasoline and probably higher home isurance for us all. ---Note there is 3300 feet of water to the Gulf floor.... then the well(s) are drilled into the floor several 1000 feet more...... It ain't cheap or easy anymore to get petroleum. [each platform has multiple wells producing]
  6. ---That may be true on old shallow wells that are slowly being emptied but make that kind of money but do you have any clue how much money it takes to drill a well 3000 -10,000 feet (two miles) into the surface of West Texas. Some of those rigs cost $50,000,000. Then there is absolute no cinch there you will find oil, in fact wildcat wells only produce about 10% of the time, 90% of those are nothing but lost money so the expense may a complete loss. You better make a bunch on the successful ones to offset the total losses which often occur. Wells dug "Infield" have a better success rate but still many fail. If you find oil, then you have to pump it vertically for 1-2 miles.... That is not easy or cheap eaither... Most crude has parafin in it which gums up the pipe... so you pull everything and clean it out regularly.... more expensive costs. ---- Most people just don't get it...... and think it is like Kwuatti oil. Drill a shallow well and it just flows out of the ground.... (remember the fires after the Gulf war that was shootiing up into the air).....America once had a few of those but no more.... It is difficult now to get oil......Our easy to get oil is gone.... forever...... That is why we are using their cheaply produced oil..... unfortunate the developing Far East now needs and wants it as well.... thus the price climbs..... (supply an demand again)... The Hurricane didn't help us any but we may reccoverly from that part eventually.... PS: I know nothing about putting our fires so will offer no advice on that subject, not even much about oil fires which can be an expensive problem and has also recently cut refining capacity on the Gulf Coast. BP has had several of those lately, they seem to need help..
  7. Exactly... you get it... that is called an energy matrix. Mass transportation and smaller cars is one of the answers. A lot of oil is used other ways as well.... plastic, road surfaces, synthetic materials, carpets, asphalt roofs, .... power generation.... a lot of ways that people don't think about.... and now the emerging Chinese and others are consuming them too.. This is not a simple problem... not many problems are... ask those who are trying to solve the mess in NO. There are lots of oil production and refining in that area too which is affecting gasoline distribution. Most of you in Dallas area is using oil being refined on the gulf (Houston, Beaumont, area, not West Texas)
  8. ---I don't understand that one.... No one makes anyone buy a gas guzzling car/suv that gets 10-15 mph. There are a lot of options in America that gets 25-30 or more MPH, we just don't buy them. Oil companies--- if they sold less products, they could just charge a few cents more and make as much or more money. The problem now is two big issues... the Far East, especially China (even Russia) is now consuming much more oil that they used a few years ago and there is only so much available on the world market so the price is climbing (supply and demand). Another huge problem is there HAS NOT BEEN ONE American refinery build in over in over 20 years. In fact in West Texas (where I live) there have been some small OLD refineries closed and this decreases the amount of American gasoline available..... and this has happened just as the demand for international oil is increasing. I remember a trip I took in 1997 or 98, I paid about 80 cents per gallon and oil companies were struggling in West Texas and as lot of weaker wells and unprofitable things (refineries etc.) were shut down.... Oil had dropped to $8.00 a barrel due to excessive middle-eastern oil available. Those resourses are now gone..... and we are now paying for it now. ---Look at the cars in foreign countries .... most are much smaller than what Americans use. I have been in Europe including Italy and most of those places make our cars look like Elephants, plus they use mass transportation including bikes and other means. Most of the foreign cars you see here are larger than what they sell in their own country. Most countrys (except in some oil-rich countries) have much higher oil prices than America so they buy smaller less gas guzzling cars. Europe is extremely high. ---Summary.....car companies offer small cars... Americans don't buy them... we like BIG ones.... No I don't work for an oil-company... just live in the West Texas oil-field area and understand what is happening.
  9. ---If Tulane does not classes ..there are big problems in the future... their staff needs a income (especially now since many of their homes are gone as well) and will have to go elsewhere I would think... Resuming in Spring would be difficult if even possible. ---If they wish to kept their football program intact perhaps those students could attend Lamar with is not too far away from N.O. and no longer has a football program. UT-Arlington has none either.... both places have stadiums and a fan base that might attend games some. Surely the NCAA would make all kinds of strange allowances. At UT-Arlington which has a stadium and practice room I would think the athletes could attend there or even go to TCU, or other nearby colleges to get classes they need.... This be a nutty idea but the whole situation is very strange and requires an odd solution. ---If we can't work out a solution for the LSU game and Tulane cancels their season then we could add one of their opponents (Both of us would be one game short) on Dec 3. or move a SBC team to Dec 3 and play one of Tulane's scheduled opponents in the date we were scheduled to play the SBC opponent.....Maybe Rice Nov. 12..and FAU at the end. or UTEP on Oct 14 and move FIU to the end.
  10. "Mr. Blutarski..... Your gradepoint average is zero point, zero, zero." "I will try to do better next time sir!"
  11. Buying gas tommorrow or later doesn't make any difference.... USING alot less might if it were done long enough. Dumb idea by someone... and yes it has been circulating for years.... even when it was below $1.00 for a while about 1998.
  12. They can't be Univ of El Paso, they are pulling from the UT fund that is why they becameUTEP...to get that money... UT system had more than could spend reasonably. They have to be named UT-somthing. They were " Texas Western" and earlier... "Texas School of Mines".
  13. No hate from me.... I am just surprised UTEP has recovered so much so quickly...I am used to seeing 2-3 wins from them.... The question now can they sustain what they did last year. I think the new conference situation will really help UTEP get attention in Texas now.. Even Midland in West Texas (my town) has totally ignored them, North Texas gets more attention probably than UTEP because several players from Midland/Odessa area go to NT. For years NT and UTEP were the "outsiders" . All other Texas teams who are now division I schools were SWC members and we (UTEP and NT) were then pretty much ignored..... Times have changed... Younger people on this board don't realize how much.
  14. Congratulations. I am only 6000+ behind. How many polls have you conducted>>>????....LOL Beat MTSU...
  15. It is likely we will play LSU Oct 29 and then play LaMonroe at the end of the season... we still get the check and have time to break in a QB and not get destroyed in week one.
  16. -----She probably is right....Our scheduled game that day is La.Monroe... another La. team... That game may be moved to the end of the season to clear space for LSU. Pressure and rewards to Monroe could be applied without much trouble I would think. Besides they would be more sympathic than some other school being an in-state university. That will put our last game closer to bowl time ---assuming we can get there again.
  17. They will deserve a refund anyway since there will be no game if cancelled. Gators are a problem no doubt but most problem ones are large enough to see in rather shallow water but I would fear snakes... rattlesnakes, copperheads, and cotton-mouths even more. That water is full of disease and sewage and chemicals which are real killers as well. ......poor folks..... May God help them.
  18. No news is good news. He survived this cut. http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=fanb...nball&type=lgns
  19. You sound as if you were an accountant for Enron...."To hell with reality"... LOL.
  20. 22 Members from GMG.... LSU-NT game is listed. We are a 33 point underdog.... (if we play) More spaces available but need to join before Saturday morning when games start if you plan on playing..
  21. No way they would have a game without power.... Problems with concession stands.. lights in Bathrooms etc. It is a dead issue unless they decided to move to Dallas.. Tx Stadium would be available and likely would likely attract a decent crowd.. if they can get out or think they have proacticed enough to make the game. If not... no game, I doubt they would make it up in December.
  22. Don't take this list very seriously.... some deserve it and some are just added as a joke....
  23. We are full again.... Warren!!!! ... actually one of my names is Warren... I just don't use it.... LOL Glad to have you .... Hope you can draft live... they are fun to do.
  24. One member just withdrew... Draft is live on Tues nite at 9:30. No strange settings... A RB/WR position added but reduced bench to 5 instead of 6. 14 teams will allow everyone to play everyone once (and one team twice). Stats typical with return yards added in order to increase number of players in pool [ 20 yds gives 1 points] This makes Dante Hall and few others worthwhile. Draft order will be randomly set by Yahoo. We need one active member.. league #: 156 password: northtexas (no capital letters) Not needed but league name is "GoMeanGreen" and I think every member attended North Texas. This is the free version... not the pay version.
