Just now, meangreen11 said:He’s at a pretty high level program right now. Not the HC but 2nd in command. He’s done as well or better than any other NT coach I can recall recently.
How do you get he's number 2 in command. That is clearly Mike Elko and that is not even close. I know it pisses off many here but the Belt at the time was considered perhaps the worst conference in the the History of College D1 Football - The majority of FCS/IAA conferences were ranked ahead of the belt. For those who complain about the level of competition in CUSA, this conference is in a complete different level compared to the Belt at that time.
DD winning % was .396. That is below
- Hayden Fry .629
- Jerry Moore .500
- Corky Nelson .480
- Matt Simon .411
- Dan McCarney .407
- Seth Littrell .509

Just wondering for those who would want him back - What do you know that it seems no other FBS schools do?

In the Covid year a lot of players probably committed without ever visiting the campus (I think Bush did with us). Might be a lot of second-thoughts come this fall.

We never approached him.
Perhaps he let it be known that he would not consider us?

Darrell Dickey wasn't the right fit here, just as Matt Simon wasn't before him. Todd Dodge and Dan McCarney, weren't either. And quite honestly, the late returns on SL suggest that this place is too tough for him, as well. Being the best of these coaches, as it appears that DD can claim to be rather easily, doesn't exactly make us feel like he was some kind of great coach. He's an OC that follows orders pretty damn well for good head coaches at Memphis and A&M.
I will always believe that he Todd Dodge era was the biggest lost opportunity North Texas every had (and wasted). I wish we would have had an AD and President at the time would would have made sure that he actually hired college level coaches at the coordinators levels; either by making it a condition of hiring or making sure the funds were available if that was the case - however I will never believe he could not have found coaches at he college level who would have taken the jobs. We had National attention that was worth millions. Interest was coming in from people who had never paid attention to NT Football.

Oh, and we wear quite a few black jerseys these days.
Quite a big difference between the black jerseys we wear now and the HS practice crap they wore that day.

With regard to the separate question of whether he should be considered as our next HC should SL leave soon . . .
He clearly reinvented himself as a coach after he left here. Any talk about our "Buick" offense needs to be put to rest. He led some incredibly potent offenses, particularly during his time at Memphis. When Jimbo Fisher was hiring his OC when he came over to A&M, he pretty much had his pick of the litter, and he chose DD...that says something. He's had one of the better offenses in the SEC every year he's been there. And I don't think, as a HC, he would abandon the defensive priority he had when he was at UNT previously. I would imagine that he's matured in his ability to manage and deal with people.
But he is now over 60. Would he still have the fire in his belly to begin a new stint as HC? How would he recruit? I'm sure he has developed many new connections over the years, and I think he could bring in a great staff.
If Wren wanted to include DD in candidates to be interviewed, I would respect that decision, even though I think better candidates would be available. If he actually hired him? I have such a hard time envisioning that, I'm not sure what my response would be.
Not to diminish DDs OC contributions, but Jimbo is the OC and makes the decisions.
I have always found the difference in A&M's pay for the DC and OC curious$2,100,000 - defensive coordinator/safeties coach Mike Elko
$800,000 - offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Darrell Dickey

Fairly sure this was the bridge after the Black Jersey Game (Think this might also be why he has not been a HC anywhere)

If we can start winning, we won’t have much of a problem with this rule.
Hope your right. Hate to say it, but I think the rich will get richer. This will lead to buying players. Hopefully we can find alums who are willing to help.

Maybe this has something to do with why the Power Leagues are open to letting a G5 school make the playoffs? Did the powers at be see this coming and decide to go ahead and act like there’s something equitable for all schools now, so as to keep any lawsuit at bay, knowing full well that paying players will pretty much crush those teams without any decent media deal?
The playoff expansion has made no sense to me, as it opens a door to schools from G5 conferences that the P5s and their media partners loathe. In case you think otherwise, remember those G5 darlings got Heisman’d by the Big XII and their media partners by getting told that they aren’t wanted, to the point that they paid the Big XII members MORE to not take any of them.
This new law is a true game changer…in that programs with the big media deals will literally buy talent that is both in HS and in college. They are about 40 schools that will like this—and about 90 who won’t. Guess where we land in that 90?
They are OK because they don't plan on being a part of the NCAA for much longer. This has opened the door for "professional" college sports. A group of schools with really deep pockets will at sometime in the near future form their own league.

So a couple of questions ...
I am guessing the women's teams will have to be paid on the same level as the mens regardless of income?
How long until someone sue for the right to pay HG players (were already seeing a player sit out his Senior year)?

sounds like we're headed to a situation where the 30-40 schools that can afford to pay their athletes significant money form their own league.
So your saying the Pony Excess is back?

Just wanted to extend my wishes and thoughts to my father and to all of the other fathers out there and to remembering the great times with those who are no longer with us.
There are many good things in life, but I can not think of any greater than being a father.
Nice message from ESPN's Stephen A Smith

Hadn't seen that. pretty awesome that he is wearing the UNT golf shirt and that North Texas is mentioned in the article
I would hope UNT would supply him, and others with all of the clotting they want. Great way to reach young golfers.
PS, supposedly this is his picture after the check ceremony

Just throwing that out there. WIth every rule, it seems like there should be an exception. I think regardless of longevity, Jamario's freshman year is HOF-worthy. Give consideration for that level of play even if they leave after a year. Thankfully, Thomas stayed.
Agree with Jamario - When a player does what he did in a season, yes he is worthy.

Looks to be a long shot. Hopefully he makes the practice squad and then moves up.

I'm awful at tact, so I'm going to continue to get downvotes for talking about this, but I find It interesting. Fun with hypotheticals:
Cobbs is one of our all-time beloved loyalists. What if he graduated the same year he led the country in rushing, then was offered by USC or an SEC school?
Same with Quinn? Or Mason?
...is it so painful to imagine them playing that card?
...we as fans are extremely loyal to our dream school. A lot of athletes are loyal to...their sport. To playing for free. Opportunities to play at the highest level and pursue The League. That pursuit comes FIRST, to climb the ladder and open the doors of change. At the end of the day, the school is secondary to that pursuit, but that doesn't mean they are not thankful. Or that there was something wrong with the previous relationship. Each person has to make their own choice and that's fine for them. Our HOF is about as watered down as it can be, but I personally would prefer if they moved on that they not be a part of it.
