What I would like to see with the additional spots is that they can be used if the player transfers out on their own. If a coaching staff chooses not to renew a player then that spot should not be able to be replaced. I know it will get difficult because the players might say it was their own choice trying not to burn bridges, but in some cases when it's very obvious a team pushes a player out and chooses not to renew a scholarship I do not think they should be able to replace that spot.

There are still several spots left. I would also think that by next season there will be an exception made to allow schools to go above 25 to fill players lost to the portal. My bigger fear is the P5's decide they want more than 85/25 and push for additional limits. -
As of now, at least on 247 - 4 out / 3 in https://247sports.com/Season/2022-Football/TransferPortal/?institutionkey=24114

This depends on the school. I believe Ruder was allowed to use the NC facilities until he left. As far as scholarships, I believe it will stop at the end of the current semester, unless the school allows them to finish the year.

People need to stop calling Pay-for-Play, NIL. This was put together to satisfy the courts and politicians and was left with very little rules. I am guessing the NCAA is using BYU and Miami as test cases to see if there is anyway to control this.

Is he going as a Grad transfer? Didn't he already transfer once?
-
This. I would love to see a study in a few years that compares how many players that stay at a 4-years school once they arrive graduate versus those who transfer. I remember a time when the presidents used to talk about the Student-athletes and focusing on their educations. Those days seems to be fading away.

Agree. I would challenge that the NIL "legality" has already been blown away. This is no longer about players having the ability to get paid, it's Pay-to-pay. The ncaa goes after BYU and Miami, but will they have the guts to go after UT or Deion Sanders (Look at the case yesterday with Sanders and JSU. Their 5 star is signing a mega deal with Barstool sports - who just happens to employee Sanders).
-
One of the sad realities of being able to pay players is G5 schools are going to have to completely change the way they think of recruiting for the most part. Yes, some G5 schools will have Deep Pockets were they continued recruiting higher-level players due to their ability to pay. That is why I believe the transfer portal will become more important to G5 because you're going to have to let the kids get the let me get paid mentality out of their systems and then pick up kids who want playing time.

I think it's going to be harder for high school players to be recruited because you have to consider how much time and effort you're going to put in to training and developing someone to move on. You will probably see more HS players going FCS and JUCO and then trying to move up. By getting a transfer with multiple years to play you reduce the risk this person will transfer out of your program. I believe in the G5 level it becomes more and more critical to be able to identify players who fit your schemes and not worry so much about the star ratings.

This change in strategy will be very interesting to see. There are a lot of good players still in the portal. Hopefully we can stay on top of this and bring in more players who can help fit our system. I still think more important than anyone else we bring in is who Seth brings in to coach the quarterbacks. No more learning on the job or inexperienced hires. We see the positive impact by getting an experienced defensive coach. Hopefully he reaches out and brings in a high caliber QB coach.
