  1. I suppose it is all how you want to read into the article. I thought it was great for a football program that does not get much attention in the Metroplex to get a DMN front page story written by the Goose. I sent the article to a former player who played one year under DMac at UNT and he thought it was a pretty good article too.
  2. Thanks for the internet etiquette lesson.....I have now removed part of the article like Harry does.
  3. Influx of transfers have finally brought talent to UNT football Rick Gosselin rgosselin@dallasnews.com Published: 03 April 2013 10:32 PM DENTON — Dan McCarney spent 18 years coaching in the Big Ten, another 14 years in the Big 12 and two more in the SEC. He knows what big-time college football looks like. For the first time in his three springs at North Texas, McCarney believes the Mean Green has the look of big-time football. “This team is a lot more competitive,” McCarney said. “There are more guys who belong here — more players that look like Division I guys. It’s exciting when you see more guys that can play. “Instead of fabricating depth and fabricating competition, which we had to do these past two years, there’s real depth, real competition, and it’s there every day. That’s exciting to me as a head coach.” In the 2011 recruiting class, Rivals listed Brock Berglund as the 15 best dual-threat prep quarterback in the nation. Johnny Manziel was No. 14 on that list and Everett Golson No. 16. Last season, Manziel won the Heisman Trophy at Texas A&M, and Golson quarterbacked Notre Dame to the national championship game. Berglund signed with Kansas out of high school but transferred to North Texas a year ago and spent a redshirt season quarterbacking the Mean Green scout team. This spring he’s competing with two-time team captain Derek Thompson for the starting job. In Reggie Pegram’s last college game, he scored two touchdowns in Purdue’s bowl victory over Western Michigan. That was in 2011. He transferred to North Texas in 2012 and gave the Mean Green fits on the scout team. This spring he’s competing for a starting position. Darius Terrell also kept the North Texas defense busy on the scout team last fall. He was a Parade All-America wide receiver who signed with Texas out of high school. He spent two seasons in Austin, then transferred to North Texas in 2012. This spring, he’s competing for a starting position as well. read more: http://www.dallasnews.com/sports/columnists/rick-gosselin/20130403-gosselin-influx-of-transfers-have-finally-brought-talent-to-unt-football-that-dan-mccarney-has-craved.ece This post has been promoted to an article

  5. I agree.....KRAM1 does a tremendous job in organizing these charity events....Thanks again for all KRAM1 does for North Texas!
  6. Ha Ha....Solid damage to mine as well as I picked them to be in the Final Four.....So much for me listening to some of the college basketball "experts" on ESPN talking about how great the Mountain West Conference was this year....Early exits for three of their five teams in the tournament!
  7. Here are his senior stats: Rushing: 108 Attempts 962 Yards 8.9 Avg 17 TD's Receiving: 12 Receptions 131 Yards 10.9 Yard Per Catch Avg 3 TD's
  8. I liked the pregame Michigan game story where Hayden switches the guards and centers around in warmups. The punt snaps are obviously terrible. Michigan's Bo Schembecher says to Hayden,"Your not going to let that guy snap in the game, are you?" Hayden says, "We don't plan on punting tonight" and walked away.
  9. To all you Hayden Fry fans, here is a long but interesting interview this week....A little over half way down Fry talks about the disappointment of North Texas not getting invited to any bowl games even though they had consecutive 7,8,9 and 10 win seasons and also Willie Nelson making a contribution to North Texas. http://hawkcentral.com/2013/02/28/catch-up-with-iowa-legend-hayden-fry-as-he-turns-84/
  10. Yes it did! Two 4-8 records for our teams made for a rough football season.
  11. Here is the 2012 CUSA TV Schedule.....Looks like Fox Sports Networks (FSSW?) had a couple of Thursday Night games. http://mattsarzsports.com/Football2012/CUSA
  12. I agree....Iowa was 4-8 last year....much better playing them over most any SEC team.
  13. I agree with your post but the sentence I left in there really caught my attention. To some it is like the Athletic Department can do nothing right in every single decision they make. I am a short timer to follow the athletic program and I did not attend UNT so therefore I have not had to endure the frustration of so many losing seasons like so many of the long time followers. However, just in the six short years I have followed the teams I have seen many good things happen with facilities, conference affiliation, new coaching hire perceptions and feel like we are real close to having greater success in athletics.
  14. Iowa had endured 17 straight seasons without a winning record when Hayden was hired so expectations were not too high during the first two years. Ironically the record in his first year was 5-6 and in the second year it was 4-7 which sounds pretty similar to DMac's first two Mean Green years. Coach Fry won the fans over pretty quick with his enthusiasm, his promotion of the team, his genius and all the unique phrases he would say. He changed the long time helmet logo from Herky the Hawk to the Tiger Hawk. His team entered the field just before a game in as he called it "The Swarm" where they slowly walked holding hands onto the field to the sidelines rather than running which brought the crowd into a frenzy. He changed the uniforms to look like the Pittsburgh Steelers which were a very dominant team at the time. Year three was when the program really took off with wins over Nebraska, UCLA, at Michigan and a trip to the Rose Bowl. We can only hope that something similar will take place in year three for DMac!
  15. As a student at the University of Iowa back in 1979 when Hayden arrived from North Texas, he was an unknown quantity to the fan base....He did such a tremendous job of turning the program around from a perennial loser to a perennial winner that he became the most popular person in the state....It is great to see that his coaching tree has such a remarkable list of well known coaches.
  16. I had a great time last night at Apogee! Easy to get in the football spirit with the pep band playing. I liked that Mac had the September & January Transfer / Juco enrollees present at the event and each one spoke to the crowd. The question & answer session with the players was interesting. Hard to picture that Shawn McKinney who entered junior college at over 400 lbs was a high school tennis player and during the recruiting process Art Briles came to watch him play in a match. I played high school tennis and would have froze up if a well known D1 football coach came to watch me play. A question from the crowd came in about player's nicknames. Coach Mac likes to give all his players nicknames and when Shawn said his nickname at the JUCO was "SNUGGLES" Mac said he would be hard pressed to call him that! Brock Berglund looked dapper in a sport coat and said all the right things. Seeing 5'9" 218 lb Reggie Pegram up close gives me the opinion that we have our 3rd or 4th and short bulldog RB who will run through people. 6'4" DE Quenton Brown looks very much the part of flying around an OT for a sack or running down an RB on a sweep! James Jones is not short on self confidence & personality and wants the ball in his hands on returns. Mac said that Darius Terrell is now in very good shape and has slimmed down some from playing days at UT. I like seeing his size at WR for us. Good to hear that Zed Evans' brother Eric is walking on the team as an RB. At the very least Zed should be a very good special teams performer for us if not a nickel back too. OT Justin Manu is quieter than many of the others but very much looks the part of being able to protect our QB. Grey shirt Andrew Tucker was also present in the group. I like seeing more recruits coming in from that East Texas football talent hot spot area of Tyler. I am appreciative to the AD for putting on such a great event last night!
  17. It is always best when the Long Snapper is invisible!
  18. Easy choice for me....Will Atterberry
  19. The process to get on the team is different for a walk on compared to a preferred walk on......Once on the team there is not much difference between a preferred walk on and a walk on except the preferred walk on is usually initially in the top 105 whereas the walk on tends to be initially in the 106 to 120 group. A preferred walk on is invited to be on the team by a coach before he enrolls in school. Once he is accepted into the school he is considered to be a part of the team for upcoming season.. A walk on is someone who is already enrolled in school and tries out to make the team after school starts. In the past the walk on tryouts at UNT have been in either September or in February or both months. A plus for a grey shirt is that he gets an opportunity to be a student only first and to possibly allow him to better aclimate himself to academics without having the pressure to be a student athlete in his first semester of school. A grey shirt does not practice with the team until after the first semester.
  20. Not always the case....over the last six years these walk ons have seen considerable playing time and most if not all later on earned 'ships: Trent Deans, Troy Kokjohn, Chase Baine, Greg Brown, Weston Squier, Aaron Fortenberry, Nic Summerfield, Drew Miller, Tanner Smith, Jeremy Bown and Ivan Delgado.
  21. The most important perk of being a UNT walk on is the honor and privilege of being on the Mean Green football team. If you are a walk on in the top 105 players you report with the rest of the team for the start of fall camp in early August. If you are in the 106 - 120 group then you report to the team around when school starts in the fall semester. You do not get room and board or meals as a walk on except during August fall camp before school starts. You do have access though to the athletic study hall and tutors during the school year if you are a walk on.
  22. My son was a preferred walk on at North Texas in 2007. He did not sign a Letter of Intent until he was given a 'ship three years later.
