(8/31/06) – In dramatic fashion senior Kristen Campbell scored the game-winning goal to lift the North Texas (2-0) women’s soccer team past Houston 2-1 in overtime from the North Texas soccer field. Campbell took a feed from Kelli Lunsford 91 seconds into the extra frame and fired a laser past Houston (2-1) goalkeeper Shelby Scott from 15 yards out. Campbell’s heroics extend the North Texas unbeaten streak at home to 15 games. North Texas had to rally to remain perfect on the year in a physical match from the onset. Houston scored first in the 37th minute as Jordan Godbolt knocked a header in off a corner kick from Sophia Mundy. The Cougars carried a 1-0 lead into the second half until the Mean Green began to swing the momentum. True freshman Kendall Juett knotted the game up at 1-1 when she sliced through the Houston defense and scored from the top of the box in the 68th minute of play. Both teams had their chances in the final 22 minutes of play but could not score. The overtime frame brought North Texas into the Cougar end of the field quickly, culminating in the Campbell game-winning goal. The Mean Green outshot the Cougars 17-13 and goalkeeper Kandice Ellis made three saves on the night to pick up the win. North Texas is 2-0 to start the season for the sixth time in school history. North Texas returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 3, at 1 p.m. with a match against metroplex rival SMU.
