  1. i've heard they play very Gurley

hahah YES!!, i'm certain they haven't heard that one before!!!

In all seriousness, Todd Gurley may be the best running back in all of college football.

I'm from Tennessee, so I've followed the vols since I was very young, and as a result the Georgia bulldogs.

Aside from Gurley, Keith Marshall is a speed back who can take it the distance as well. Their qb Aaron Murray is a solid qb who can make you pay on the ground every once in a while as well. They don't quite have a true number 1 receiver with Malcolm Mitchell out, but they spread the ball around through the air.

On defense they've given up some yards and points so far but they've gone against Clemson and South Carolina. Their defense hasn't been their strong point over the past couple years, but they have good size and they run a 3-4 scheme.

They're breaking in 3 true freshman starters on the defense at linebacker, safety, and cornerback, so those might be a few guys we could exploit but they are very talented which is why they're starting as true freshman for a preseason top 5 national team.

As an SEC fan, I firmly believe that Georgia is the biggest underachieving team in the nation in the BCS era. They're the only big state school from one of the top 6 recruiting states (California, Texas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Ohio) in the country that hasn't at least reached a national championship game in the BCS era.

We can score some points on this team and if our D plays like they have in the second halves, allowing just 6 points through 3 second halves this season, then it could be a surprisingly close game. Keep that explosive offense off the field and see what happens.

  2. Watching the replay, the thumb that "cramped up" was not the one he put down to catch him as he went over the bench. The thumb cramp is plausible as it was just holding the ball with that hand. On TV they showed him downing the pedalite while McNulty was in.

Exactly. Watching the replay there was nothing that would leave me to believe it was anything more than a cramp. His thumb just looked like it was locked up in a natural position.

Should be fine, we can only hope.

  3. Texas is 1-2, we are 2-1. We could very easily have a better record than them this year. Just wanted to throw that in there.

There's been talk about Ohio beating Marshall. Marshall could be the team to represent the east this year, which means if we make it to the CUSA championship game we will have a shot against them, ECU, or whoever.

Our division is shaping up to look wide open. Tulane beat La Tech in a sloppy game. Two teams that we have a very good chance to win against on the road.

Tulsa got smashed by OU, not saying much but they still don't look impressive. Rice beat Kansas for the second straight year and appear to be the team to beat as of now. MUTS squeaked out a win against Memphis and they'll be a tough game at home with potentially a bowl slot on the line.

UTSA had a respectable loss to Arizona. Not a game to take lightly but we should win that one. UTEP beat one of the worst teams in FBS in NMSU, the only team Idaho beat last year.

My power ranking through 3 weeks on our division:

    1. Rice

    2. North Texas

    3. Tulsa

    4. Tulane

    5. UTSA

    6. UTEP

    7. La Tech

  4. Get out of that Georgia game as injury free as possible heading into the bye week, then we're looking at 8 games in which we should have a chance in all 8.

4 home games and 3 road games against a few of the easiest teams in our conference as of right now (La tech, Tulane, Southern miss) and a game against Tulsa which looks less daunting by the week. Continue to take care of business at home and let's see if we can steal some on the road!

  5. You have more hope than I do then. I think we have the best we have out there right now and that the depth situation is fragile at best. If it wasnt you wouldn't see freshmen like Kidsy and Williams and walk on freshmen like Milugin losing their redshirts on the field this year. And I know better than to wager anything on a JUCO to fill any spot for next year.

Regardless, this is one of our most experienced teams in a while that one should expect to win the close ones like Ohio.

    Rick

Kidsy isn't redshirting because he can be a difference maker.

Turner smiley, who is a decent looking freshman receiver, is redshirting because we have depth. Point is we have the depth to redshirt Kidsy, but he's a pretty special talent, same with Chad Davis. They are true freshman who are ready to contribute on a D1 team as freshmen.

  6. Abbe goes 320+.

This guy is the starting nose tackle for BYU, who just beat the snot out of Texas:

    http://byucougars.com/athlete/m-football/eathyn-manumaleuna

    He's 6-2, 305...smaller than Abbe.

In OU's 3-3-5, they've been running out there this year, they have a starting linebacker who creeps down to the DE position who goes 6-0/219.

I agree that size in middle is important, and we have that. Everywhere else, it's being disciplined in scheme. That's how those guys in Utah have made BYU successful, Utah successful...and, of late, even Utah State. They know they don't have enough bodies for a successful foru man front, so they don't even fight that battle anymore.

Lord, even Alabama uses a three man front. I'm not saying it will make us the next BYU or Utah overnight. But, hell's bells, if OU, playing the competition they will face are comfortable creeping a 219 pound linebacker into a DE spot to create some havoc...?

I've harped on Mac's biggest shortcoming being his inability to recruit big guys for that four man line. And, it's a legitimate beef. Every coach in college will tell you those guy are hard to find. Well, if the Nick Sabans and Bob Stoopses of the world are saying, "screw it...we'll try to get pressure with a three man line" that should be sending some sort of message.

Here in Texas, isn't a 40-21 blowout of the "Flagship School's" football team by a smaller defense not message enough? Utah rising out of nowhere to jump out of the WAC/MWC mess into the Pac 12? Not even Boise State has managed that.

It's not likely that we'll have a change to a 3-man front by next year, but there is a 0% chance that we will be running one by the end of the year. Abbe will be gone and next year that'll leave us with just Sir Calvin as our only 290+ defensive lineman.

And we just aren't bringing any big lineman to rotate in. We don't have any guys who are truly big enough to play nose in our current scheme besides Abbe and Wallace, and of course Abbe is going to be gone after this year.

  7. I agree with Lifer and to a degree with TFLF.

TFLF brings up a good point with the 3 man front. However, the biggest problem is the nose guard. That is quite possibly the most important position in the entire scheme. If you plug in a 260 lb defensive tackle at nose guard because we don't have any big kids who can play then that makes things difficult on the rest of the defense.

You need multiple 290+ kids to rotate in that nose. Taking on double teams every play takes a toll, even on the big boys. We just aren't getting the big bodies to pull that off right now either.

  8. Obviously, it's early. But if this assessment is close to accurate, can we expect 5 conference wins?

    Beat the underdogs:

    1. USM - 39 pt advantage

    2. UTEP - 26 pt advantage

    3. Tulane - 23 pt advantage

Win at least one of these:

    4. La Tech - 11 pt advantage

    4. UTSA - 2 pt advantage

    4. MTSU - Even

    One "upset" win:

    5. Rice - 2 pt deficit

    5. Tulsa - 3 pt deficit

Seems a completely reasonable expectation which is why I predicted 7-5 regular season as I anticipate our guys taking care of business this weekend.

It is very reasonable. Problem is that wins have been hard to come by for DT and Mac, so as bad as USM and Tulane have looked I still have trouble penciling those games in as wins. Same with La Tech who I think we would take care of at home, but on the road not so sure.

  9. .

    .

Yup.... and 6 of them plus Thompson, and at least three of their back ups, are seniors.

And there are 7 seniors on defense and at least one back up...(Sarge) who is also a senior, forcing us to not only replace 7 seniors on defense but FIVE of them are part of our starting front 7. That's a scary thought.

In fact, this is possibly our most senior laden team we have had in years?

All total, we lose 18 senior starters and back ups next year. That's why THIS YEAR is the year to win because next year we will be in full blown rebuilding mode,... something Im looking forward to.

    Rick

I disagree. On the surface it seems that we'd be doomed after all the departures but Coach Mac has built up the depth on this team. We have some legitimate D1 players on our bench who are underclass men.

On offense: We lose DT (could be a situation where we don't know what we got till it's gone), but return the other 3 qbs.

We lose Byrd, but I doubt we skip a beat with Jimmerson, Pegram, Rollins, and Lewis back.

We lose Prior and Miller, could hurt the run game a little but shouldn't affect the passing game, plus we'll have M Smith, T Smith, Cooper Jones, Chris Loving, and Wylie Reinhardt. Most are blocking tight ends anyways save for M Smith and Jones.

Receiver will be the biggest hit where we lose Chancellor, D Smith, Pleasant, and Caldwell. We will be fine at starter with Carlos Harris, Terrell, and Kidsy back but depth will be a concern.

    Offensive line just loses Anyiam.

On defense: Defensive line looks the scariest, lose Boutwell, Abbe, Bellazin, and McCoy. We have guys with starting experience (Lincoln, Mason, Polk) and some guys with promise (Wallace, Roberts, etc) but that is the scariest unit next year from a depth and talent standpoint.

We lose Orr and Wright at linebacker which will hurt. Luckily we'll have Akunne back and Anthony Wallace (Oregon transfer) in the fold as well as some young guys who look good, like Fred Scott. We might be looking at a good juco guy to come in and help here.

At defensive back we have James Jones, Kenny Buyers, and true freshman Chad Davis who are getting experience. One of them will replace Hilbert and possibly another one could move to safety to replace Trice. Hopefully Freddie Warner can be healthy to compete for that spot like he was.

In short, we will most likely be hurting from a depth standpoint but we should still have a good starting lineup. A lot of competition this spring, but hopefully some of these guys have great falls as backups and out themselves in line to start or be immediate options off the bench. Coach Mac has kept his recruits on campus and we have some depth finally. Now we just need to start winning these close games.

  10. What made Vince Young so deadly in college? At the end of the game, when you needed a touchdown, Vince Young would deliver. Now I know it's a stretch comparing DT to VY, they're not even in the same universe, but like everyone has been saying, we need to be able to win close games on the road if we want to go bowling. The simple truth is we can't rely on Thompson in the clutch. He's great when the running game is flowing and there is a blowout, but he looks skittish when the game is on the line. And after three years of being the starter, having MULTIPLE chances to show us that he can perform in tough situations, and still not proving us wrong, I think it might be time to quit expecting greatness out of him. He's not a great QB. He's a below average FBS quarterback. He's limited. We should just swallow one more year with him and wait with anticipation for what DW potentially could be. The key word being "potentially."

Yup, that's the reality of the situation. But some on here will call you a hater or give you excuses about coaching or supporting cast. Truth is DT hasn't delivered and that's why everyone is so critical of his performance. Not because he was 19-29.

  11. I don't think pulling two series necessarily is the best argument, but folks shouldn't get to excited about DT's 75% completion pct. You could pull the KSU and another game last year and get a similar stat. DT wasn't horrible against Ohio but it wasn't good enough. In fact, can you find 10 games in DT's career that he's played better? It was a mediocre performance but it could be one of his better games. That's not good.

Two years ago DT looked like a mid level Sun Belt quarterback. Last year he looked like a bottom of the Sun Belt quarterback. We need him to be a mid level CUSA quarterback this year. I'm hopeful but not expecting that to happen.

No, but it is a good sample of how all the coaches do when DT is in is try and dink and dunk teams to death. That's what we did the K-State game and the Idaho game. The coaches don't trust him down the field (15+ yard passes). His completion percentage should be high considering we don't throw downfield.
  12. Can we fire Canalas AND bench Thompson? If the prior accomplishes the latter I'm all for it.

I just watched the game, in spite of already knowing the score (masochism at its finest). I'd love to throw the ball more...you know, if we had a guy who you could depend upon to deliver an accurate ball...even one two or three yards down the field. It's not DT...his numbers look far better (and they're not good) than his actual performance because Darnell Smith is doing his best contortionist act to bring in balls behind him and over his head. Delgado did the same thing last season.

This team has the talent to win even with Thompson, however. My biggest beef with Canalas (I'm assuming) isn't play calling so much as it personel usage...3 of our best offensive weapons are Byrd, Pegram and Jimmerson...these are 3 very good backs...they're never on the field at the same time. More two TB sets and using the likes of Chancellor, Harris and Kidsey in the run game and I think we can move the ball with this line (can't believe anyone was questioning them) even with Thompson at QB.

I usually look forward to your posts and you didn't disappoint with this one. Absolutely agree.
  13. The much more crucial issue is can NT stop an opponent's first drive.

Sure NT will pass on first down and even the first play of the game. McCarney is a run first coach, but the passing game is better right now.

If we can stop the first drive and play as well on defense as we do the rest of the game we'll be great.

We've given up just 13 points on defense combined in the last 58 minutes of the first game and 59 minutes of last game. That's 13 points in 117 minutes. Our defense is playing amazing, save for those early big plays.

Offense needs to get in the endzone.
