  1. The line will be 3? or the score will be UNT by 3? I guess we'll have a better feel after their game with ULM this week.

UNT -3. I think that's pretty fair because I don't see us as a team that's going to have a lot of blowout wins, if any, the rest of the year. Point is I think a lot of our games will be close so our lines will be too as a result.

  2. No one has said anything about PJ being a good kid. He didn't put on a good or bad front. None of us really knew anything about him as a person. Even though he might've been, calling a freshman in college a terrible person is unnecessary IMO.

Of course there is no way last year was all Benford's fault. It was a complete train wreck (or dumpster fire) which means pretty much everyone was to blame. Players immaturity was a big issue, but that doesn't change the fact that Benford failed as the leader of the team.

No point in arguing who was more responsible, because they all were.

  3. Not wanting to debate the departures/non-arrivals, but here are the guys that are not in Denton.

Josh Friar - Major project that came off his high school's .500 record bench. Should have never signed. Headcase

Tony Nunn - OK, but was too slow and out of shape for a faster paced offense. Injury prone. Not a big loss

    Never signed:

Arthur Casimiro - Brazilian Juco that was not putting up D1 numbers in the few games he played

Anthony Norris - Was coming off Midland's bench. Was never the player he was as a HS Soph.

    Left the program:

Trey Norris - Was never going to be a key factor

Clarke Overlander - Had every opportunity to impress the coaches during his .30 seconds in and out of the rotation.

Why were we going after those first 4 guys in the first place? And don't forget about PJ Hardwick. He was a very serviceable backup point guard.

Especially with Casimiro and Friar, they were big reaches at the time and we were all making sure not to overreact to their lack of production. Turns out we shouldn't have offered them.

  4. And the thought that came to my mind was..."wow...this conference USA thing is already yielding benefits to both our football and basketball recruiting". Guess its just a difference in perspective.

I absolutely agree. That was my initial thought, then it became "thank The Lord we are in a better conference or else I don't know what the heck our best pitch would be."

As for Cooley's post, sounds good! Although I wouldn't classify Jordan Williams as a guy who lacks production. He was our leading scorer as a sophomore so he has produced and has time to get better.

Finally, TJ Taylor should be fun to watch this year and I can't wait. Although I wouldn't hold my breath on his hardship waiver. The NCAA ruled him in eligible which prompted him to go forward and have the surgery. Getting a late release from your LOI really puts him at the mercy of the NCAA, especially since he already took a redshirt year during his first year of college.

  5. Is it just me, or does the end quote sum up how bad a state our basketball program is and show how little we have to pitch to recruits?

The end quote/thing he says that stands out about how he views us and why he committed to us is "I like that North Texas is going to conference USA."

Hope Benford starts proving us wrong, but the first thing I thought when I saw Combs committed is that he could be a good building block for our next head coach. Either way, very excited about this pickup.

  6. I'm not a football coach so I have to believe that the only reason he is not being recruited is because he is only 5-6. We also know that scouts/coaches miss out on guys all the time; due to the so called measurables. I've seen the kid for 3 years now and throughout the playoffs each year. Arm strength is NOT a problem. I say offer the kid, play him wherever, because he is clearly the MVP of a statewide top 5 program in our backyard. I was not a Scott Hall fan because he legitimately didn't have a strong arm, whereas his backup did. Maybe this is overrated.

Like I said, I think he can play receiver or be a guy we hand the ball to on fly sweeps. As for qb, that's just too short. For reference, guys like Johnny Manziel and Riley Dodge are considered undersized for qbs at about 6'0". White is 5'6". Half a foot shorter than guys who are considered undersized.

As for his arm strength, we'll just have to agree to disagree. He doesn't have a joke of an arm, I just don't see D1 zip on the ball. I do see D1 speed from white however

  7. I hate to be a basher, but I have seen this kid play and he just wouldn't have a chance, as meangreentexan said. We aren't talking about a kid who is 6', or even 5'10. He is 5'6". That's giving up 10" to the average lineman. His arm strength is also not at the D1 level and he doesn't spin the ball the way you'd like out of a D1 qb.

But yes, I've wanted us to pursue him for a while as a guy you get the ball to.

  8. This game was scheduled when? 2010? That year, the Bulldogs were 6-7 with a loss to UCF: 6-10, in the Liberty bowl.

It's not that we're scheduling really good teams, it's that we're scheduling teams and miraculously, they become top-10 teams when it's time for UNT to play them. Let's just hope (as it stands right now) that Tennessee and Iowa are not both top-10 teams in 2015, and that Texas doesn't rebound to end their season and finish strong (not looking good for them right now, but hey, it's UNT's luck). I don't think we'll need to worry about Indiana...

I would hardly call it miraculous that Georgia is a top 10 team. They get their pick of the litter in recruiting in the 4th best high school football state in the country. They should be a top 10, at least top 15, team every year, as well as Texas and USC.

As for Tennessee and Iowa, Iowa hasn't been very good lately despite having a good coach. This is partly because they are recruiting out of Iowa which is hardly a high school football hotbed (sorry mini Mac). I think we could beat Iowa in 2015 and Texas next year if they keep Mack Brown.

Tennessee on the other hand looks like they've finally found a capable coach. They're just looking for a capable qb of the future, but they currently have a top 5 recruiting class that has guys who will be pretty darn good by the time we play them.

On a side note, as a lifelong Tennessee fan I will be making my first trip to Rocky Top in 2015 wearing Green. Can't wait!

  9. Jeez I hate to see this. I was hoping they would lose by 40 to everyone in conference.,UTEP is bad, La .Tech is bad, Tulane is bad, Tulsa is a mystery, Rice is good, and UTSA is... We will see.

I really hope they don't score another TD all year.

They have a good coach and probably the best qb in our division. There's a good chance they'll experience a drop off after this year without him
  10. I'm not convinced yet that we're actually better than Tulsa or MUTS. . . . But based on current body of work, #4 is right where we belong.

We've got the three winnable road games against the Louisiana schools and USM as well as the home games against UTEP and UTSA. If we take care of business in those games then we should get to a bowl.

If we can prove we are better than Tulsa and MUTS on the field then we're talking about a nice bowl game as well as a chance to compete for our division and conference championship.

  11. I expect a game plan like we had against KSU last year. Lots of short to intermediate passes to help the pass protection.

That's our offense. We threw the ball 47 times last week and the longest pass play was 25 yards. Nothing wrong with that either. Ball control as best as we can and we may be able to hang with these guys.
  12. One question that this makes me think of...I wonder what happens next year? With Tulsa and Tulane leaving the West division and (probably) Southern Miss and UAB coming in, do the schedules get made from scratch? Or do we forever have no Texas teams at Apogee in even years?

Yup, good point. Yes, UAB and Southern miss are entering our division for sure. I would think they start over with the scheduling, especially with new schools like ODU and WKU coming in.
  13. How would we go about redshirting DW since he already played? Maybe fake an injury or something, but burning his redshirt still makes no sense, especially after Mac still went with Mcnulty after DT had to come out on Saturday.

I too hope we can find a way to redshirt him still.

  14. I firmly believe this will be a different team on the road.

I'm basing that off 3 things:

    1. We are simply a better team with more depth than the past two seasons.

    2. The way our defense has made adjustments in the second half with 2 second-half shutouts and giving up just 6 points against Ohio in the second half.

    3. A different DT this year. They've finally calling plays that suit his abilities. Curls, outs, and slants to death on these teams as well as the occasional running threat from DT.

As everyone has said, the next step is to actually get back on the plane accompanied by a W. Playing well on the road but still losing isn't good enough anymore.

  15. On last week's prediction thread, I said you can take it to the bank: "UNT 35 Ball 28". I caught a bit of kidding from billysee58, but I do see a good year for the MeanGreen. I went up to Moscow last week and after three quarters we had N. Illinois in a good battle. Lost in the last quarter, 45-35. So, a baby step forward for us did happen. Good luck at Georgia. This is why we play the game --- Akron about got Michigan. I see a very respectable showing. I will wait for your prediction thread and come back. Again, nice job. I want to see how rock star saw the game. Fun reading your forum. :goodjob:

Yup, good job on the prediction and good game Saturday.

How'd Chalich do? His numbers were decent, just wanted to hear how he did with the eyeball test. Impressed all of us live. How about Epps? What a pickup by you guys out of a JC.
