  1. Maybe my favorite thing that we learned from this game is that we have a legitimate D1 receiving corp with depth.

We usually talk about how the o-line, running backs, linebackers, or sometimes even defensive backs are our best and/or deepest unit. Saturday showed that that honor could go to our receivers.

As special a receiver as brelan is, I think Darnell Smith may be our number 1 receiver and for good reason. He's our most underrated player on the team IMO and his talent gets overlooked because he was once a walkon. He's got the size, speed, and route-running abilities to move the chains and be a deep threat. Also Kidsy, Terrell, Harris, And others showed play-making potential at wideout in game 1.

My point through that splurge on the receivers is that Brelan can be on the bench this year and we can still move the ball through the air. We went 5 wide a few times Saturday with Brelan on the sidelines.

While it would be a waste to not get our dynamic playmaker the ball through the air, we have options and can give him plenty of rest time before and after his returns. This way he won't be worn out and he can be fresh while returning punts and kicks, helping us win that battle of field position.

  2. Yes , thanks for the correction. I keep getting them mixed up Longwood , the DI school in Virgina

Not your fault. Longwood would probably be a better opponent for us, but that's not worth getting into. Maybe your subconscious wishing we were playing a D1 school?
  3. Friar should have never been offered. He wasn't that good. Came in and really made dumb decisions and clearly showed that he didn't care about being here and didn't care about discipline, pushing himself, or being a member of the team.

He is better off not here for both of us.... and i guarantee you, he will never wear a North Texas uniform. You may have beef with Benford on somethings.... but, this shouldn't be one of them.

But then shouldn't we have beef with Benford offering him in the first place?

  4. Was able to catch 3 HS games in 3 nights. Fonzale left the game early in the 4th with leg cramps but clearly, had the best game of the UNT recruits/prospect. Xavier Washington (Cedar Hill) didn't do much against Guyer and both DeSoto defensive linemen were also quiet against Arlington Martin. All faced tough opponents in their first games of the season.

The De Soto defensive lineman couldn't have been that quiet. Their defense held Martin to under 200 yards of total offense and less than 100 rushing for a team that has been one of the best rushing teams in the metroplex in recent years.

Maybe they weren't making plays left and right, but it sounds like they were doing their job. Good to hear about Fonzale though.

  5. Great game from DT, great game called by Chico. Truth is, none of those passes we're high difficulty and there is nothing wrong with that. He made the throws and that's all you can ask. That's what needs to happen all year long.

  6. Yes, please tap the brakes talking about feeling sorry for anyone who goes against your son because of how he played in high school. We certainly all hope that Connor does a great job and know that you are proud. You don't see other players dads on here talking up their sons like that. This is college football man, not daddy ball; why not let Connor's play do the talking?

Whether he taps the brakes or not doesn'tchange how excited he is or how well Connor's going to play. Connor's potential is through the roof with his size and strength and the kid plays pissed off. Can't wait to watch. He's a redshirt freshman I'd be most looking forward to watch play regardless of whether I know him or not.

On a separate note, thank The Lord for football today! Been waiting for this for too long!

  7. Yes. I video recorded it to show the league what was going on.

    Rick

There is a lot ridiculous about that. What I don't understand, besides the coach, is why the game was scheduled at 3 in August. That's the hottest time of the day in the hottest month in freaking Texas. My youth football leagues didn't start playing until September and even then we played on Saturday mornings.
  8. Really? Clawson was at Tennessee/in the SEC for one season...the season Fulmer was fired after eight games. I think the problem at Tennessee during that time period was multiple presidents, NCAA investigations, and Fulmer at the end of his rope.

We be lucky to have the "absolute joke" Clawson on our sideline. In fact, if we have another losing season, and Bowling Green goes bowling again, I'd say put him on the short list of coaches to consider to replace McCarney. Without question.

I'm from Tennessee, so I've followed them for a while. You're partly right, there was a lot more to that season than the infamous "claw-fense." He didn't get near the production he should've with guys who were drafted in the NFL like Luke Stocker, Jonathon Crompton, Denarius Moore, Montario hardesty, and NFL superstar Arian Foster to name a few.

Clawson isn't a joke, he just was in the SEC. Yeah, I wouldn't mind going after him but I also have some faith in Mac and Chico. Hope they prove me right.

  9. Calipari turns his roster over year after year and doesn't have a probl....oh wait, that would be an apples to hand grenades comparison. Carry on.

Yeah, those are NBA first round picks so it's not even worth comparing IMO. But you know that.

Our recruiting isn't exactly taking off. This time last year we already had commitments from the two juco guys (Casimiro and Norris) and Tony Nunn and Friar and Wesley pretty soon after. I don't know how many commitments we could or will get before basketball season and/or early signing period. This might be another year where Benford is scrambling trying to sign people late. Players who everyone has already passed on.

  10. So here's a breakdown of our roster situation down the road.

We will lose 3 seniors this year and they're all guards (Alzee, Vaughns, and Walton). We also have one open spot after the departure of Friar, so we will be able to sign 4 guys this class.

Here's who on our current roster will also be on our 2014-2015 roster:

Guards: C Jones, J Williams, TJ Taylor (all 3 seniors)

    Maurice anefiok (junior)

Forwards: Voss, Flannigan, Gaines, Coleman (all seniors), Wesley (sophomore)

The question is, what do we do with our 4 spots? All 3 of the players we lose off this year's roster are guards, but how many guards will we sign?

We have 4 true posts who will be seniors next year and a combo forward in Greg Wesley. We are very deep at guard this year and even next year, but J Williams, C Jones, and likely TJ Taylor will all be seniors that year as well.

If we don't bring in any good post players this class then we will be forced to play freshman or juco guys at the post in two years.

Because Friar and Nunn aren't here and Hardwick and Overlander have transferred, we are looking at a roster with just two underclassmen. While that usually creates good leadership, it makes the future look a little unsettling, especially when you consider that even most of the underclass men are unproven.

Our roster in two years will be made up off, at the most, two guys on the current roster and 11 new guys that we will acquire in the next two classes. Benford has created a logjam grade wise on our roster. Let's see if it works this year and if he can recruit well enough to still win down the road.

Playing primarily freshman two years from now wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. Playing freshman who aren't ready and/or talented enough to compete on the D1 and CUSA level on the other hand, that's scary to think about.

  11. In Bowling Green's defense, they did have a Top 10 defense last year. So, it wasn't all just Tulsa sucking. Dave Clawson is a pretty good football coach as well. He likey and teachy the pro style sets and running the ball.

Dave Clawson was an absolute joke in the sec as an offensive coordinator at Tennessee.

Bowling Green made that bad qb from Tulsa (Cody green) throw the ball and he just wasn't effective enough. But yes, their defense was good.

  12. How is this going to affect the balance of scholarships? I don't want the new coach in 2015 to be screwed from the get go and have to figure out how to allocate 7 open scholarships in year one with a program that has seen 60+ losses in 3 years.

Well, we have 7 juniors on our roster, so there is going to be a huge overhaul after next season, like you said.

Anefiok is a sophomore and Wesley is a freshman. Those are the only current players who are projected to be on the 2015-2016 roster. So yeah, the new coach, which I see in our future as well, will have a lot of work to do in the recruiting trail and on the court.
