  1. What scares me is that I don't think there is a QB that exists that Mac would trust enough, in college or in the NFL, at least against good competition.

Against the worst team in FBS (UTSA would beat them by 2 TDS), we were right around 50% on 1sr down and the offense hummed (again, against the worst defense I have seen in a LONG time).

You think it's because they played a bad team, I think it's because they had faith in DT that game. Yes, they go hand in hand.

They had faith in DT that game, against that defense, so they threw it on first and second down. It wouldn't be any different if we had a stud qb who could perform well against good teams. The question is, do we have a stud qb?

The coaches have no confidence in DT. Like what has been said, this is not the first time we threw a screen on a pivotal third and long situation late in a winnable game. They don't trust him to throw the ball more than 15 yards down the field at all and they would rather not throw it more than 10 yards down the field if possible, and it may be rightfully so after seeing the interceptions.

This is why I'm calling for a new qb. Not because we run too much on first down, not because I think DT is the worst qb ever, but because our coaches don't trust him. The lack of trust combined with his physical limitations (lack of running threat and lack of downfield accuracy mainly due to wobbly passes) make our offense so predictable.

  2. The simple fact that he is playing is enough for me to want him. Where is Brock?

I don't know what it would have taken for Scotty to unseat DT. Coach Mac is extremely stubborn with his starting positions as it relates to giving one to a new guy over an incumbent. Aside from qb, take a look at cornerback where James Jones should be starting.
  3. Serious question, not a smart-ass rhetorical one.

UNT90 and I have had an argument on here about this and I want to hear what others think.

What were the first-down run vs pass percentages last week against Idaho?

I think they mix it up when they have confidence in the passing game and mainly our qb. The other theory is that no matter who is under center we will predictably run the ball on first down (90's theory).

If the former theory is true then I think we need a new qb regardless of who it is or if it's fair or not. We are improved from a talent and depth perspective, but not good enough to make it to a bowl game while being this predictable, allowing defenses to know exactly what's coming, and just having no faith in our qb.

  4. Exactly Billy. There was one scramble that DT he where he had all types of room to run and took off only to get caught from behind by a Dlinemen, resulting in a .0003 yd gain. I just find it hard to believe that the options that BB or DJW would bring to this offense wouldn't outweigh an thowing errors. I can't imagine that they are that much worse than DT chucking the ball

That's why I'm so disappointed. I think if BB or DW had played that whole game against Idaho their numbers would've looked gaudy, much like DT's.

We can't let teams stack the box like this all year again. We also can't have a qb who the coaches don't trust all season.

  5. We need to diversify the offense somehow. If they don't trust any of the QB's to throw the ball at least bring in Dajon and try to zone read.

Exactly. Even after the Idaho game, the coaches didn't take anything from it. Our coaches still don't trust him and the opposing coaches don't respect his passing.

DT isn't great, but he didn't play to the top of his game either. You aren't going to have your qb on every game, but if he is a running threat then you will always have that and opposing coaches have to gameplab that whether he is throwing the ball great or not. DW and BB are great athletes who could impact the game even if they were struggling to throw the ball.

  6. Hey guys, I know there has been a lot of overreaction and people's two cents but I just wanted to give mine too.

Yup, definitely a team loss. Kicking game is mess, shows why we're spending a scholarship on a kicker this recruiting class. It seems we got ran on a little too much considering we were facing a lot of backup o-lineman, and of course some boneheaded plays.

Here's the deal on DT though, in my opinion. He does just enough to keep the job but not enough to take us where we want.

::: Everyone was stoked about the Idaho performance but the truth is the Ohio coaches didn't see the film and say "Oh man, this Thompson kid is a world-beater. Forget stopping the run, we need to run nickel all game and stop this air-raid passing attack."

Go back and watch the Idaho game. Was there one pass that you think an average qb shouldn't or wouldn't make? Sure, the side step and deep ball to chancellor was sweet, but it wouldn't take an above average qb to make that play IMO.

I think maybe the pass to Terrell over the middle was an above-average pass, but other than that it was a bunch of well protected short curls, slants, and wide receiver jet outs against what has to be one of the worst secondaries and defenses in the country.

Finally, as Harry said yesterday, Thompson still poses no running threat. Even if DW or BB turned out to be our answer at qb, they wouldn't be on every game. However, they would pose a running threat whether they were throwing the ball or not. A few times they rushed 4 and dropped 7. They got a "coverage" sack and forced DT to scramble a few times where he couldn't do anything. You have to wonder how DW or BB would've looked scrambling on those plays.

We still have a chance at a bowl, but next week is a must win if there ever is one this early in the season.

  7. Could you imagine waht it would be like around here if we were to head into the Georgia game undefeated and then give them a game (not saying a win, but jst play them within a TD)? I know its a complete pipedream, but it would be almost unchartered waters around here. If that couldn't get the attention of the UNT Family and the DFW sports media, then nothing would. But wouldn't it be fun to find out what that would be like!! You only get to dream these things when you win your opener!!

If that could happen then we'd be favored or have a very good (legitimately) to win each game for the rest of the season.

The depth on this team will really come into play this season, especially as we get later in the year. By Mac keeping the guys he signs and developing them, he has developed a true D1 team with depth.

  8. Pretty good write up. I think these rankings are pretty spot on, at least with what little we know so far. Also, 3 of the top 4 teams in our conference (according to this list) are in the eastern division which means we could have a good shot to compete in the west, especially if Tulsa stays down.

We also avoid the top two teams (Marshall and ECU) and we get MUTS and the only team ahead of us in our division (Rice) at home. Couple of huge home games potentially looming for us in October.

  9. Against a zone coverage DT is going to need to be quick and accurate with the ball. A lot tougher test this week than that abomination of a secondary that Idaho had. He doesn't need to be 23-27 this week, but I would like to see a lot more if those high completion passes we had Saturday.

We have the playmakers at receiver to dink and dunk the ball and keep the chains moving. Curls, screens, jet outs, and quick slants worked great because DT got them where they needed to be and our receivers made guys miss. Let's see more of that.

  10. That sounds like a Zach Orr Field Day!

    Crush them!

Will wright looked as good as he ever has on Saturday. He's gotten bigger and speed has never been a problem for him. We all know what Akunne can do too. Hopefully our stud line backing core can expose these backup lineman.

And yes, being down two centers will be an interesting situation to watch.

  11. Doesn't pretty much every HS player in Texas (with your occasion Blake Dunham-type exception) want to play for UT? But they only get to take 25 a year.

Basically, yeah. They get their pick of the litter in Texas of all states. Them and Georgia are the biggest underachieving teams in all of college football for that reason. Georgia should have been to at least one BCS national championship game by now, and Texas hasn't won 10 games in 4 years. But that's another story.
  12. Thanks Joey! Good to hear you had a good time. You guys will be fun to watch, especially with the Chalich-Watson tandem.

As far as your optimism, sorry if I tried to take it away. Optimism is one of the few things you're guaranteed as a true die-hard fan of a team that goes through it's ups and downs.

Good luck the rest of the year.

  13. I think this battle will be done before it gets started from what I have heard.

I like what they did with DaJon, a great way to develop what looks to me to be an outstanding QB. Lots of time and little pressure in a real game, with fans noise and all.

Yup. Unless something major changes it'll be Dajon. It seems Berglund's window of opportunity closed and Mcnulty, who has actually had a chance to prove it on the field, just isn't a starting D1 qb.
  14. So, anyone know why Zed Evans didn't play? Seems like we heard a lot about him at least being a gunner on the special teams and playing some in nickel packages. Maybe I missed it, but was there a point where we played anything other than a 4-3? Or are we using Will Wright (and other quicker LBs) as another player in the secondary? For much of this game we were in control and had them needing to throw on most downs---yet I don't really ever remember us getting out of our base defense.

To me, that's pretty concerning once we meet up with some teams that can really move the ball through the air.

Evans got some playing time, particularly in the second half. He's jersey #1.
