  1. That's not exactly rocket science. THE recruits have definitely improved over the past couple of years for North Texas. If you know what you're talking about (and they aren't just recruiting anyone who wants to come and play) our new recruits have been recruited for more than just the availability/competitive talent to play RIGHT NOW. This isn't the NFL. There's a big big difference in a 18 year old whois an awesome high school athlete and shows collegiate potential in speed, strength and agility and a 21 to 22 year old that the program has had the ability to mold for a couple of years. And they quite possibly recruit players for a different positions that they hold in high school.

If you base your intelligence strictly off of rivals and Yahoo Sports, you're missing significant details.

I love it! Hope John has the fiery intensity to prove the recruiting websites that you do. Actually, that's probably where you got that from.

Personally, I factor in a player's offer list, film, and his recruiting site rankings in that offer with the first two subject to alternation. I trust a player's offer list before I trust my personal evaluation of his film, because I cede that I am not a professional talent evaluator. Just a college kid who played in high school and has watched college football obsessively since I was 7.

When a player has been recruited over it means that a player has been passed on the depth chart by a younger player. Some freshman come in bigger and/or faster than a 21 or 22 year old could ever get. This is a good thing for the program and means that recruiting is improving. An example is Darvin Kidsy playing over seniors like Pleasant and Caldwell. Cyril Lemon starting as a true freshman is another example. John playing as a freshman is an example too, make no mistake about it.

Diamond in the roughs are great to have, especially the ones that pan out. But it's also great to get highly-rated guys who a lot of people want and can contribute early like Zach Orr and Cyril Lemon.

  2. It is nice to be near the scholarship maximum, but I don't think it is a good sign that so few of the underclassmen are not substantially contributing. For example, this was supposed to be the year; that the offensive line was much deeper; yet he is basically playing 6 men just like last year.

As far as redshirts, freshmen that I believe have already lost those are Williams, Scott, Schelleci, Melugin, Kidsey, Flusche, Ellis and Davis or about half. Yes, there can be hardship waivers still, but let's not get into that again.

Mac loves playing upperclassmen and starting guys with the most experience. He also doesn't do a whole lot of lineup shuffling. The lineup that started the first game against LSU last year was almost the exact lineup that started the last game against WKU, save for receivers after losing Brelan and having Harris and D Smith overtake Bynes. This year the only switch has been at cornerback and that'll probably be the only change all year.

For the rest of the time that Mac is here you will see a high percentage of our starters being upperclassmen. He hasn't brought in the highest rated recruits and until he does he will develop the young players until it is their turn to start.

  3. They lost 32 last year and have 26 this year, not sure how many are scholarship, but we're only losing 18 scholarship seniors. Anything under 20 is a low number of seniors graduating.

Problem is we're losing studs like Orr and Chancellor, as well as four d-lineman where we have the least depth. Plenty of teams in the country, our conference, and our division will lose more than us.

  4. No. that way of thinking has already resulted into losses. Maybe at the end of games, once we have worn the defense down or in short yardage situations. If theres 8 in the box and we are running, we better be going double TE or something similar.

I'm not saying run it 50 times into an 8-man front. If they're putting 8 in the box we should be throwing, but we should also rush for more than 20 yards or whatever it was against Tulane.

  5. You have to also realize that Middle Tenn did not stack 8 in the box like all the other teams. So I really question whether or not we have gotten better in the run game.

The MUTS game will be the last game all year where the team we play says "beat us with your running game, we dare you."

It has been the other way around for almost every game since Mac has been here, and it will be back to that way for the rest of the year. Teams will see the MUTS film and continue to stack 8 in the box and make DT beat us.

  6. It's hard to move up the rankings if you can't string together more than 1 win at a time. As 90 said, big time opportunity games on the road.

Would it be a stretch to say the next two are must win games? In the sense that if you want to make a bowl game, surely you must be able to beat teams that aren't in the top 100 teams in the country.

  7. Will Wright

As good as he's been doing, that block in the back on the blocked kick Jones returned for a td drove me and many others nuts.

James Jones is quickly becoming one of our best players. He could be our best overall player on our defense next year, looking a little down the road.

  8. I assume you're talking about winning C-USA West. Seeing as that they are 3-0 in conference, wouldn't we need them to drop two more? If we both were to end up with one loss, I'm thinking they'd hold the tiebreaker since they beat us.

Three way tie with us, Tulane, and Rice all taking turns beating each other and finishing 7-1 in conference. Very unlikely and early to be talking about that, but it is a possibility.

We just need to take care of our business for now.

  9. when i was in school from 07-10 we had 2 home victories...we have had 3 already this year. its awesome

I feel for you. Your 4 years were about as rough as it gets. Glad that didn't keep you from supporting the guys in green. I'd bet a lot of your classmates don't come to games as alumni because "we suck at football" or at least did during that period. They're missing out on some good football that I'm sure you're loving as an recent alum.
  10. I believe we saw the highlight if Terrell's career week one.

As possible as that may be, Terrell is downfield threat. Not necessarily a deep threat, but he isn't a guy who is built to catch bubble screens and get YAC.

All our passing game consists of is bubble screens and dump offs, which works with chancellor and smith to a degree. I'm holding out hope that the coaches will trust whoever our qb is enough to actually throw the ball more than 10 yards past the line of scrimmage.

  11. Stress fractures of the feet are not good for basketball careers, especially bigs who put a lot of stress on said feet.

See: Ralph Sampson and Yao Ming just off the top of my head.

Exactly, unfortunately. And as Army of Dad said, we have enough problems getting guys to return from their injuries on time anyways. Big opportunity for Coleman to step up, especially if he really is a big east caliber big man.
