  1. 6'2" 192 lb outside linebacker from Lake Travis. We offered about a month ago and it's now showing up on scout. Also has offers from Texas State, Iowa State, Nevada, and New Mexico. Those schools are showing up on a lot of our targets' offer lists. Going to need to win these types of battles.

  2. Agreed. Having the DB's sit back 10 yards the entire game and letting them thow screens and other short passes. Drove down the field way to much and took way too much time. I honestly blame the loss more on the defense in the UTSA game

They gave up 21 points. I know it was a team loss, I know they gave up a lot of 3rd down conversions, but if you can't score 21 points at home you have to be kicking yourself as the offense. Not to mention we blocked a punt and returned an int inside the 30 and got just 3 points at of that, combined. Also, our cbs played off all year. Allowed for our to stop getting beat deep as much as early in the year and allow our safeties to help out a lot in run support.

Wasn't the best game for the defense, and it was a team loss. But to give most of the blame to the defense on that one was and is still ridiculous.

  3. ...and he was relatively unknown. He was signed as a package deal with Byrd who was the high profile signee of the two. So you just can't tell which player will come to fall camp and catch on fire.

I don't get why this is always said. How was Byrd the higher profile of the two? Neither had any other offers. Package deal implies that we basically had to offer Brelan to get Byrd.

It's irrelevant though. And both ended up being great players from us. I just don't think calling them a package deal is accurate.

  4. I agree with you but I have seen "openings" come up on greyshirt guys before when we were supposedly "full up". The latest example was the big defensive tackle Dylan McDorman from WF.

Scholarship count is a moving target and I gave up trying to interpret it years ago. At last signing day, Mac stated we had one spot left to give and we've had two additions since then.

It's just hard to a tangible number to it because it is so fluid.

Mcdorman was before the 25 cap per class rule was into effect NCAA wide. It only was enforced by the SEC that year.

Yeah, I'm not sure why we kept hearing we had just 1 spot left after signing day. We had 19 signees and 4 walkons counting towards our class at the time, giving us 2 spots left. Why we were told we had just 1 never made sense to me and didn't end up being the case. We did have 2 spots. We could blueshirt Chumley if we really wanted, but it has sounded like grayshirting was the route of choice the coaching staff was choosing with him.

  5. I disagree with people saying that Tackle will make him look more draftable in the eyes of scouts. I'd be surprised if you could find one starting tackle in the NFL at 6'3" or below, which is what Lemon is. Plus, he was solid at tackle last year but not NFL caliber, like he is at guard. He's a guard all the way in the NFL, regardless of where he plays this year.

If I had to guess I'd say the addition of Darren Denucci was one to get a guy to come in and compete for the starting right tackle spot immediately. If he's (or Renfro is) one of your best 5 linemen then you move Cyril back to guard. If he isn't then Cyril will likely play tackle.

  6. We've been very picky with high school running backs so far. We have 1 junior running back, 3 sophomores, 1 redshirt freshman, and 2 true freshmen coming in (with at least 1 likely to redshirt) all on scholarship. But Mac has said he wants to take at least 1 back per class.

  7. i can see him filling the same role that Kidsy did last season for sure, but from the slot.

I agree. Although I could also see him catching on potentially as a return man. If you watch his highlights, he gets a lot of screens and is good at reading and letting his blocks develop. Could translate in the return game.

i dont think any of them step in and make a huge impact right away... I for see a lot of red shirts this year, especially the defensive guys. the wide receivers are the most likely to play their first year. and willy will get redshirted at RB because there are already 7 guys back there so why waste a year of eligibility? Okee will get redshirted to put on bulk, i like Jalen Adams to also play along with tee and fonzale. outside of that, everyone else gets redshirted. on second thought... maybe kishawn mcclain finds his way into the special teams unit... there are a lot of guys I am excited about for 2015 though. I think this will prove to be one hell of a recruiting class!

Mac has been letting his linebackers play as freshman rather than redshirt. Fred Scott and Sed Ellis last year, Lajaylin Smith the year before. I would be surprised to see both Garner and Montgomery redshirt. Same with McClain and Andrew Jones at defensive back. Mac played Shilleci and Chad Davis last year and Busby and Devante Davis the year before. Busby and D Davis were more out of necessity, but something to consider.

As far as Ivery, I could easily see him catching on as a return man. Redshirt Jeffery Wilson and let Ivery be a return specialist and get garbage time reps at RB. I also am thinking we will redshirt two receivers and play two. Rutherford is the most likely redshirt, and I'd be surprised if both Adams and Davis played right away. I also think Adams' potential is greater at cornerback, but that's besides the point.

  8. Tee Goree is the obvious choice on offense for me. On defense my pick is Brandon Garner. With his blitzing ability and coverage ability he can be a weapon on third downs.

Hard to pick this year, though. Probably the most freshmen who are ready to play immediately that Mac has brought in since he's been here. Although we won't know that for sure until they put the pads on.

  9. There was really only one game that truly gives me the red ass and that is UTSA. We tried to throw deep and killed drives several times. Vanilla would have won that game. DT and Chico lost that game.

Just because we were throwing deep doesn't mean we weren't being vanilla that game, IMO. Same goes for the game before, which gave me a bad feeling that it would come back to bite us. We kept running the ball and trying to hit the deep ball against UTEP as well. It resulted in DT hitting on just 10-24 passes. We smashed UTEP because we were so much better, which masked the problem the offense was setting itself up for.

Tried the same thing against UTSA and it got us in a hole we couldn't get out of. DT was at his best when we spread out the offense and dinked and dunked teams to death. When we mixed the run with the short passes we saw games like Idaho, Ball State, and UNLV. When we went power run-power run-play action pass we saw games like Tulane and UTSA.

Whoever our qb is, I just hope we give him the best chance possible to be successful. DT had some solid games when we kept throwing the short stuff, building his confidence and letting the receivers pile up the YAC.

  10. Bad in the first half? When he wasn't allowed to throw a first down pass? And all he did when the chains were taken off was lead this program to the most important comeback of 2013, and possible more? In a possibly program turning half?

Yet some people still are clinging to their preseason agenda of DT sucks?

Check back with me after game 5 this season. If the QB lineup remains the same to that point, I feel you may have a far different opinion.

I'd be very surprised to see our new qb come in and be as successful as DT was in those non-conference games like Idaho, Ball State, and our bowl game against UNLV. But DT had a td:int ratio of 4:5 (8 tds and 10 ints) in conference play.

If our new qb can snag us 2 out of conference wins and improve steadily during that time then maybe we can see someone take us to that next level of winning our division and surpass the bar that DT set. Hopefully our coaches put our new qb in as good a position to be successful as they can. I agree that DT wasn't always given the plays called to his advantage.

  11. 6'2" 192 lb safety from Skyline. We have offered. Also holds offers from UCLA, Wisconsin, Washington State, and Memphis. Surprising that we offered him almost 3 months after we offered 3 of his teammates. His body fits the mold of the outside linebackers we've been recruiting lately. Probably a safety in college, but something to consider.
