  1. There surely will be waivers and lawsuits and exemptions. Let's be honest. When it comes to the term student athlete in the context of big time money football, the first half is very often ignored (and sometimes, cough, Troy, cough, in smaller programs)

I would argue that any kid who is getting a mere 2.0 in high school (high school!) is in no way prepared to perform in the college classroom. I doubt that extra .3 is going to change it. I imagine this will hit the rampant one and done of basketball more than it will football where so many redshirt already.

It could make a bigger difference than it sounds. Could be the difference in a kid coasting into college with a 2.0 and a kid busting his butt the last 2-3 semesters of high school to try and bring it up to a 2.3. Improving study habits before college helps make the transition easier for any student.

And yeah, should be interesting for basketball. A lot fewer redshirts in basketball. When you only have 13 scholarship players (versus 85) it's tough if you have 2 or 3 kids sitting out the season due to academics. Then injuries and such can really thin out the roster quick.

  2. First link is from 247, from a tweet by a UNC coach. Second link is an NCAA doc explaining things.

The current minimum GPA for an incoming freshman is a 2.0. If a student has below that he will still have to head to a JUCO or prep school. However, starting in 2016 (with the 2016 class coming in as freshman) freshman will be required to take an academic redshirt season if their core high school GPA was below 2.3, but they still were able to qualify by having a 2.0.

Basically, in between a 2.3 and 2.0 equals an automatic academic redshirt season. Some other changes, but that's the big one.

  3. Has a sort of josh white feeling. These are the recruits we need! Not focusing on the over hyped Dallas area.

Seriously? The same "over-hyped" dallas area that produced our top 4 scorers from last year and top 5 from the year before. Same over-hyped dallas area that we were told Benford was hired in part due to his ability to recruit there.

Same over-hyped dallas area that Benford has focused on but still is yet to land a guard from. And now that he finally lands a high school guard, because he's from from Louisiana (with just 1 other offer from University of New Orleans) we can now call the Dallas area over-hyped.

  5. 6'0" 180 lb athlete from Austin. Was selected to the 3rd team All CenTex football team last year for his play as a defensive back, despite playing for a private school. Houston played all over the place, as a cornerback, safety, running back, receiver, and return man. He could project to multiple positions in college. We have offered, along with Iowa State, Tulsa, Idaho, and Sam Houston State.

  6. Does the Mormon mission rule come into this at all?

Once you first enroll in college as a full-time student (12 hours or more) you're eligibility clock begins and you have 5 school years to play 4 seasons (1 redshirt year). Mormon missions (missions in general) are one of the main exceptions and the one I can think of off the top of my head, since it's used the most.

It basically freezes the eligibility clock. Since most Mormon go on their mission when they're 19, some, like athletes, will not enroll full time (or at all) in college until after they got back.

It sounds like that the case with Denucci, since the article said he had 4 years left to play 3, going into last season (2013), when it was presumed at the time that he was going to Nevada. Now, if he sat out last year at Snow, he'd have 3 years left to play 3 seasons.

  7. 6'4" 285 lb offensive tackle from Bentonville, Arkansas. We have offered, as has Arkansas State, Georgia State, La Tech, Memphis, MTSU, Southern Miss, Tulsa, and Utah State. Played right tackle for his school, and could project to multiple positions across the line in college.

  8. 5'10" 185 cornerback from Southwest Mississippi CC. Played at Mississippi Gulf Coast CC in 2012, and sat out last year due to academics. Currently committed to MTSU. Also holds offers from Troy, Wake Forest, Utah State, and La Tech. We have offered. Originally from Mississippi. Will have two years to play two seasons (will come in as a redshirt junior).

  9. Schools that are in UNTs recruiting tier purposely look for diamonds in the rough. They hope thier targets stay unknown and do not get a lot of attention on the recruiting sites.

two examples from last season are kishawn McClain and Connor means. Both of them did not have the stars or offer list. they were both known in the Houston area, but thats about it. They were top targets for UNT. once UNT got those commits, they were pleased. Its exactly who they wanted. And yes, there were 3 star athletes they could have had at both positions.

I thought it was a mistake to pass on some 3 star QB for means. Means did not have a good senior season. I asked a staff member about means, and they still wanted him without a doubt. He graduated early, came to UNT in the spring, and it looks like they made the right choice for this team.

Sed Ellis is one from 2013. He snatched up an early offer, and there was a highly rated LB in the area, that wanted to sign with UNT, but it was too late. offer was gone. He still signed with an AAC school, but he wishing that UNT offer was still on the table.

I wouldn't say Means was that much of a diamond in the rough. He held a Boise offer at one point. I think his offer list was what it should've been, considering he didn't have great production. I really McClain. I could see him starting early in his career.

Yeah, we're going to keep getting these diamond in the rough type players. My hope is that we can have a steady mix of those guys and guys who we had to win recruiting battles for.
