I personally never said this staff can't recruit, and only one person on here suggested that. But I do hold firm to my statement that it was disappointing that we had just one commit in the middle of June. We still had/have plenty of time to bring in some studs, but it was disappointing having just one commit to that point after we were/are expecting an improvement in recruiting after breaking through on the field. Miller and hopefully Brooks tomorrow is a great way to get things going in gear. Keep that up and we will prove that recruiting is improving as our on-field success begins to occur. Really promising stuff. But, but, but, but our coaching staff can't recruit, can't sell North Texas, can't capitalize on our bowl win. Knee braces for sale for 5 easy payments of $29.99.
Lol, for sure. Those are the types of problems you're fine with, especially on a junior film. Now if a kid is too slow and/or small, or doesn't have the nastiness, etc, those are problems that you can only coach up so much. Really excited about the future of this d-line with Coach KP and Miller coming aboard. Gotta love being able to get pressure from a 4-man pass rush.Billy, I'd be willing to bet my ridiculously small MS coaching check that coach Mac and co can fix his tackling form almost immediately. Correct me if I'm wrong but he reminds me if a harder working Blankenship from TC.
Not sure. Never watched Blankenship play. Miller doesn't quite have that frame, but if he could be similar and make more out of his talent we'd have quite the stud on our hands.

Absolutely. I liked how he looked even playing the wide-9. That, plus being unblocked, plus his speed off the edge is just asking to get your ball carriers hit. I will say, the one thing that stands out negatively is that he could use some work tackling, particularly not tackling so high. But just a great get. Kid plays nasty. There's a reason they have packages with him at fullback. Some schemes are absolutely baffling! Why on God's green earth would you leave this monster unblocked unless you were running speed option or the read option on him. This kid can play sideline to sideline, through lead blocks, step under OT to fill holes. Impressed!!

Looks like Brooks is about to be commit #2 for 2015. Beating out La Tech, and recently SFA (offered about a week ago). La Tech has been doing great in recruiting. Beating them out for East Texas kids is huge going forward IMO.

Awesome! He's liked us for a while and it seemed we were in good position to get him locked up early. Then in Vito's recruiting series he made it sound like he would wait out the process. Either way, great to hear!
2015 started where 2014 left off. In East Texas. Bendy from Tyler, hopefully Brooks now.

How many commits did they convert to walkons? Tell us. Not sure how I'm reading that wrong.Ok, that's who they signed, how many offers were thrown out on the table? 60-70-80? How many commits did they convert to walk-ons? How many times did they jump on a recruits board that was flooded with G5's? Wisconsin does it.
You don't have to prove it's a common occurrence. Just that making their commits walkon happens at all. And Wisconsin is who we're talking about doing this "bully recruiting." You said so on the first page. No, you are twisting words that I said. What the hell is wrong with you folks. I didn't say that anyone bullies anyone on an individual basis. I didn't say that convincing commits to walk-on is a common occurrence as you are insinuating, but let's not fool each other and act like that doesn't happen. And also I have completely almost stopped talking about Wisconsin. I have been speaking now P5 in general.
Also, you have those url's saved in your head? Or on your desktop? Or did you have to. Look. Them. Up?
And lastly, Billy, let's not act like you're the only one that follows recruiting closely.
Never said I'm the only one who follows recruiting closely. Just that I couldn't follow our recruiting as closely as I do if I got bitter everytime someone committed to a higher-profile program. Nothing about anyone else. You said anyone would be a little bitter. I'm telling you I'm not, so that's not true. I love following this stuff. But getting too emotionally invested in a 16 or 17 year old's decision is too much for me, personally.
And I also didn't say I didn't have to look up the urls. Just said those were examples of Wisconsin putting walkons on scholarship that I could think of off the top of my head. No research involved. Just googling their names so I could link their UW profiles to back my argument with evidence.
-
No research involved. Just pulled those two off the top of my head. You made an accusation that Wisconsin gets kids to commit early then bullies them to walkon. My examples were off the top of my head, but you can do some research and try to find examples of that. If not, you're just making a baseless claim.Bully recruiting happens. Over-signing, loopholes, borderline cheating, etc. etc. etc. For you to tell me it doesn't exist shows your ignorance to it. And yes, obviously schools put walk-ons on scholarship. Thanks for the extensive research though. It's an epidemic among primarily the P5. And hell yeah I'm bitter about it. Guy is a great player that I thought we had a semi-good chance of landing. Whoever says they aren't a little bitter about this is a liar. My bad for being passionate about this program and showing my bitterness.
Grayshirting happens. But these coaches aren't going to convince Chris to walkon. Nor is that a routine Wisconsin practices. Any kid talented enough to get a Wisconsin offer will have other options if Wisconsin wants them to walkon. Chris is no different.
I follow recruiting very closely on the national level and especially UNT. If I got bitter everytime a kid picked a higher-profile school over UNT, I wouldn't be able to do this.

Not all offers are committable. The coaches signed off on Chris' commitment, so it obviously was. They don't convert these commits to walkons. Fine me one example. I can find you an example of the contrary. They put former walkon Jared Abbrederis on scholarship after a year of busting his butt on the scout team and he ended up getting drafted by the Packers this year.

And then there's this guy, who technically came in as a walkon after transferring in from Central Michigan.

There is not a set number of exactly 5 power conference programs, and there is no such thing as "bully recruiting." You just made it up.
Ben, please just stop acting like you know what you're talking about. It's one thing when you do it on meaningless topics, but this is disrespectful to Wisconsin, Chris, and the Orr family. Not to mention it makes our fan base look incredibly bitter.

Darn. I liked his game. Not the fastest guy, but you don't have to be at middle linebacker. I still think we need an inside linebacker this class. A guy with some size to go along with our smaller, speedy linebackers. When these guys get to campus we'll have just 2 scholarship inside linebackers in Fred Scott and Anthony Wallace, who will be a junior and senior respectively by then. We'll see.

6'4" 290 lb defensive tackle from Coffeyville CC in Kansas. Was very highly recruited out of high school, likely at Coffeyville because of grades. Originally from Florida.

Exactly. It's not just the big schools anymore that get commits during the spring and summer.I'm usually on the "give it time" train of thought but recruiting has changed. The fact that we only have one commitment at this point is concerning.
And yes 90, other schools are proving that we may be behind the curve in recruiting and it's not just because we aren't in a big conference or that we haven't had a lot of success on the field lately. Still plenty of time. Just a little disappointing, like you said. No need to be in panic mode.
FWIW: Vito says we may be getting a commit after this weekend is over. Not sure if that's speculation or if he knows something.

Visited this weekend. One of our highest rated offensive linemen targets and still has just 1 offer, from us. However, he has a ton of interest and is being slow played by schools like Baylor and OU.
Convincing him to commit rather than holding out for the big schools would be huge. Like I've said before, we have just one true left tackle on the roster in Antonio Johnson, who graduates after this season, and Hughes is one as well. He'd have a great situation to step into here.
