  1. That's weird. He has been on the roster all year, at least until last week I saw he was still on there. I've seen him on campus as well. I was under the impression that he'd be good to go for next year. He may still be, but that is a little concerning.

  2. Yeah, a DT from Southern Miss and a CB from Rice. A guy from Pittsburgh State got drafted. How a guy like Brelan doesn't get picked up in the next 154 picks is beyond me. He's a game changer that will translate to the next level. A couple more years of body maturity he could a next up and coming Wes Welker type player.

La Tech D-tackle just got drafted.

SN: I don't see La Tech taking a big step up this year, like some are predicting, after they fell off last year. They actually lost more seniors than we did, including a lot of their best players, save for their RB Dixon. And they still are weak at qb.

  3. I would make a few changes to your top 5.

    1. Brelan

    2. Zach

    3. Aaron

    4. Abbe

    5. Marcus

    6. Byrd

    7. Darnell

    8. Boutwell

    9. LaChris

    10. Pleasant

    11. Wright

    12. Sarge

    13. Miller

    14. Prior

    15. Scrappy

    16. RV

    17. A windmill

    18. Spiriki

    19. Derek

    I kid, i kid.

I know you're kidding, so know I'm not coming down on you personally. I just wanted to make things clear that I do not want this to turn into a DT-bashing thread. I mainly wanted to see what 09 though about DT's throwing motion and if he thought that would hurt his chances, because I think it does. Just like with Tebow, as earlier mentioned.

But if I just wanted his opinion I would've pm'ed him. Everyone else's opinions are more than welcome, I just don't want it to be another shot to make a dig at DT. Just discussing football.

  4. I'm. Or worried about this guy. He will be alright. The only player I have questions about is Harris.

Yeah, him personally I'm not too worried about. Especially on offense. Not so sure about defensively, as GMG24 brought up.

But as a whole, having only guards who were not offered by any other D1 schools could spell disaster. Especially if we go that route when replacing CJ, TJ, and Jordan.

  5. 6'3" 210 lb linebacker from CS A&M Consolidated. Had 110 tackles, 12 sacks, an int, 5 forced fumbles, 4 fumble recoveries, and returned 2 fumbles for touchdowns last year as a junior. Named first team district 14-5A. Also holds offers from Colorado, Rice, Arkansas, Utah, and Texas State. Texas State surprisingly leads for his services at the moment, according to Rivals.

  6. My Top 5 UNT NFL Draft Prospects

    1. Zach Orr

    2. Marcus Trice

    3. Brelan Chancellor

    4. Derek Thompson

    5. Aaron Bellazin

I think if anybody gets the call its Orr. The WR position is so so deep that's going to hurt Brelan. On most boards Brelan is probably ranked between 40-60 best WR. Hard to believe CBS had him ranked like 529 overall. Its only takes one team to like him. All 5 of these guys including Abbe should be UDFAs. I think Orr Trice and Chancellor will make rosters

Interesting. Like you said, it just takes 1 team, but I just can't see Orr being drafted after the numbers he put up on pro day. We all love Zach and everything he's done, but those numbers were killer in his chances at getting drafted. I agree that I think he gets invited to a camp and does great on the field, but I can't see a team actually using a draft pick on him.

As for Chancellor, he has to be the most likely to get drafted. I don't see the injury concern. He only got injured once in his career. I get that he's little, but he's very strong and was one of our strongest players, pound for pound on our team. Not to mention he had by far the most combine comparable numbers at our pro day. I don't think he's likely to get drafted, but he's our only player who I could actually see a team spending a draft pick on, because of his return abilities. A Marc Mariani type late round pick.

I'm interested in what you think about DT. All his UNT criticism aside, I think his throwing motion is what would deter NFL scouts first. He has the long, pitcher-type motion that got Tim Tebow just hammered by NFL analysts. And they ended up being warranted. I agree that he has a check for size and arm strength, I just don't know if that's enough to overcome the X marks for his production and throwing motion.

Even if these guys don't get drafted, I can't wait to hear them getting invited to camps. They all deserve it and will represent us well.

  7. I believe we found our replacement for CJ when he graduates. Now let's get a solid freshmen big next season.

I'm not so sure about that. GWP is more of a shooting guard, but can be a good distributing guard and run the point in a pinch. It just seems that his primary position is off guard. If anything I'd say more of a TJ Taylor replacement. Because TJ does some of that combo guard type stuff for us.

I really was hoping this kid would commit. Could be a fun player to watch for 4 years, if we can actually keep a player that long. He's a legitimate 3-point shooter which we need if we're going to go small, and he needs to be able to do in order to consistently score as a 6'2" guard at the D1 level.

But looking at this commitment objectively, GWP was dropped by Tulane after committing early in his junior year. Despite putting up great numbers, they didn't think his game would translate well to the D1 level and they felt they could get better players available, from reading their fan board. And other teams seemed to agree, as he didn't officially report any other offers, just listed interest from other schools.

So GWP may technically be our 4th guard commitment 6'2" or under with no other D1 offers. That being said, I think he's the best and has the highest ceiling.

  8. Love that he's a basketball player. Those kids know how to use their body to not only shield defenders but also to go up and grab the ball like a rebound.

Yup. And to add to your and Emmitt's points, those are the type of guys you take your chances with in man coverage on the outside. As much under-center offense as we run, and play-action as we run, these tall outside receivers are what we need.

You don't have as much time to get open as a receiver when your team is throwing from under center vs. shotgun. Thus, you need guys who don't need as much to get open. I.E. guys who are taller than the defender they are matched up against and guys who can "outrebound" their opponent and make a tough, physical catch in tight coverage.

  9. 6-4 4.5 forty wow sounds like a great pickup!

He's got all the tools, he just has not produced much up to this point. Only had 368 yards last year as a junior, but I think he's going to have a big senior year. If he had more production he would have a lot more offers.

I've really liked this offer since it came out, looking into this kid. Of our outside receiver offers who we realistically had a shot at, he was right up at the top for me, in my inexpert opinion. Very happy about the potential of this pickup.

  10. Good job by the staff! This is a kid who could really blow up with a big summer in 7on7 tournaments, camps, or if he has a big senior season.

That's what I've been saying its going to take. Convincing recruits that, even though their recruiting could blow up, he doesn't need to wait, and that we're the right choice for him.

Still have a lot of time that we're going to have to hold onto his commitment. But I think it's easier to fight off the big boys for a kid if he's already committed to you, rather than uncommitted with offers from P5 schools.

  11. Interesting... Isn't Harris a go as well? Two sophomore pgs plus a junior point guard. And CJ and TJ. Lots of smaller guards this year. Is someone else leaving? (Harris?)....

This Jones kid is a recruit for next year's class. He's still got another year left at his JUCO. That's why Brett put this in the recruiting forum and not the basketball forum.

  12. 6' 200 lb linebacker from Richland high school in NRH. First team all district 4-5A last year as a junior. Was named sportday DFW player of the week for the week of October 28th after making 14 tackles, 3 sacks, a pass broken up, and a forced fumble against Keller Central. Plays outside lb in a 3-4 scheme, so plays a lot by the line of scrimmage. Hard hitter. We appear to be his first offer.

  13. 6'3" 248 lb defensive lineman from Graham. Visited spring practice this year. First team 5-3A all district at defensive end, but is big enough to grow into a 3-tech naturally. Also plays offensive tackle for his school. Colorado State has also offered.

  14. We didn't have our first commit last year until July, and not until June the year before. I think we've figured out by now that the strength of this staff is not light-the-world-on-fire recruiting. Hopefully they can find enough to make something of.

The DeSoto kids committed in late May last year. But still, compared to what these other teams are doing that's not that early. Especially considering they didn't have any other offers.

We had a breakthrough year, but it's still not enough where our name alone recruits for itself. We need the coaches to be able to sell the program and convince these kids that we are a great destination, and not just an offer that they'll take if they don't get anything better by the time their senior season is over.

  15. get off the ledge, man. we'll get our recruits.

We will. But his alarm is not completely unwarranted. They are doing a great job selling their program. And with less to sell than us IMO.

So many of our targets in Vito's recruiting series are talking about waiting the process out. That's not uncommon, but UTSA is doing what we have not, as of yet. Selling their program enough to convince the kids that there is no reason to wait.

  16. 6'4" 285 lb offensive lineman from Argyle. Starts at left tackle for Argyle where he was 1st team all district last year, and could project to multiple positions on the offensive line in college, like a lot of the recruits we are after. We may be his first official offer.

  17. 6'1" 195 lb receiver, currently committed to UTSA. Plays a lot in the slot for his school, but we may want his size on the outside. One of 9 current UTSA commits, including his teammate (WR Trey Hamilton). Been committed since February, but his recruitment may be picking up soon.
