  1. Always the toughest and rarest of position to land. Very few good ones available and they get stockpiled by the p5. I think Coach Patrick will really help us improve in this area.. Mike Nelson was a good D-line coach but he was not a recruiter.

Absolutely. And I don't know that KP is the sole person to thank for this, but I love that we've broadened our horizons in DT recruiting. Like you said, the best DTs are stockpiled by the big programs which makes it tough for schools like us. Unless you have an ace recruiter or two.

What makes things even more difficult is if you're limiting where you're recruiting DTs from. Even if that state is Texas, it's hard for kids to fall through the cracks here, especially DTs. Just this class we've offered DTs from Louisiana, Georgia, and Utah. And we may have a shot at pulling the kid from Utah, and he's a legit nose/1-tech prospect.

  2. The bigger guys seem to be a little scarce this year. We've offered five that are uncommitted. In reality four, since Duvanta Lampkin is a 4* recruit with a dozen offers. They are Samson Salluone 6-1, 300; JC Mike Edwards, 6-1, 295; Sami Awad, 6-2, 275 and Kaden Jackson, 6-2. 270. Only Awad is from Texas. The best prospect that I've seen on video has not been offered by anyone. He is Jordyn Johnson, a whopping 6-5, 306 from Garland Lakeview. He must have academic problems because he looks great on his video. I'd offer and hope.

We actually offered Lampkin as an offensive guard. We're the only team to have offered him on the offensive side of the ball. Also, we're recruiting Kaden Jackson as an offensive lineman. A few other offers out are Mikorri Reese (Louisiana), Quentez Johnson (Georgia), and Bobby Leath (Coffeyville CC). These guys have big time offer lists as well though. Then you have a few guys like Dustin McWhorter (Graham) and Carl Thompson (Guyer) who project as 3-techniques on the next level. Same with RD Wegmann from WF Rider.
  3. I don't hold out any hope for Mann but Myles Cheatham (Cedar Park) and Blaine Padgett (Hardin-Jefferson) are three-star athletes who I do think are possibilities. Each holds about three other offers and are actually rated slightly higher than Mann.

Even though they may be rated higher, there's no question in my mind that Mann is the best of the bunch. I've been high on him since we were the first team to offer and since then about 20 schools have offered. The thing about Mann is that he doesn't have any single offer that stands out as a team we can't beat. Sort of like Sam Miller's offer list, schools like Houston and Kansas State. Just more offers.

We've offered some pretty good ends. I also like Josh Little from Oklahoma. That's why I think it may be a case of who commits first may get the last spot.

  4. Jackson twins are at unt and working out this summer. Just a guess, but looks like they will be walk ons trying to earn a scholarship.

Thanks! Good to hear! Yeah, it didn't seem likely that Mac would let them in on scholarship due to the way they left UNM and the fact that they were good, not great prospects in high school. Great additions as walkons, if that's what they are.
  5. I would be surprised if all 3 of our grayshirts make it on campus.

Yeah, but it's hard to see any of them not. Chumley is too talented for the coaches to pass on. As for the DeSoto kids, I think the last school in the country that Coach Mac wants to upset is DeSoto. If he doesn't honor their commitments and bring them in on scholarship in the spring, then that could be bad for our reputation at a school that we really, really like to recruit and currently have good standing at. So unless they choose not to make it in or don't get in because of grades, etc, then it's hard to see them not enrolling under scholarship.
  6. Aren't both Jacksons DB's? We may not see many freshman DB's in this class. Also, Chumley will be a TE, right? If so, I doubt we take any TEs either.

Yes, the Jackson's are both DBs but we have offered a few JUCO DBs and I think we take at least 1 true high school safety. We're thin there on our roster, particularly with regards to underclassmen safeties. Also, not entirely sure they're on campus yet or if they're coming in on scholarship.

As for Chumley, Coach Mac stated on signing day that he will attend his first positions meeting with Coach Canales and be given a shot at quarterback. Personally, I think he ends up at tight end, but we have offered a few other tight ends including Hunter Herndon and Chance Bishop. I would be surprised if the coaches didn't get Bishop, or someone like that, this class to be a run-blocking specialist at tight end and be like a 6th offensive lineman like Andrew Power was.

  7. His profile and background pic are of him in a UNT jersey....gotta be a good sign

It may be wise for Holmes, Eli Howard, or any other defensive end to strongly consider committing soon. We already have 3 defensive linemen committed including the grayshirts. 2 are defensive ends (Miller and Graham). I can't see us taking any more than 1 more defensive end.

However, a guy like Kenneth Mann (now up to 20 offers) is someone you make room for. Still holding out hope for him, but trying not to get too greedy after getting Sam Miller.

  8. This is a very trick subject and we only have an iota of light shed on this compared to what we'll have in January and February. But with 3 commits we're already starting to see the class take shape.

We should have 25 spots for this year's class. I'm not 100% sure which walkons have been put on scholarship, but if they've only played one season for us before being put on scholarship then they will count towards this class. Also grayshirts and FBS transfers count.

I believe Sheldon Wade and Erick Evans were placed on scholarship after spending just one season (2013 as walkons). They may count towards this class, assuming they were officially put on scholarship. Rashad and Vershad Jackson, UNM transfers, should count as well assuming they do end up transferring here on scholarship. Sam Rice, SMU transfer will count as well. Finally, the three grayshirts (Jon Graham, Shaq Jackson, and Caleb Chumley) will be a part of this class as well.

*Between all those players, that is 8 out of our 25 spots filled up. Throw in our 3 current commits and that's 11 total. So while we only have 3 commits, we may have as few as 14 spots left in this class.

Abdul Beecham said the coaches told him they plan on taking 5 offensive linemen. The coaches said at a junior day that they plan on taking 4 receivers. Since we already have a receiver committed, that's still 8 more spots right there. Meaning potentially just 6 spots for any qbs, running backs, tight ends, linebackers, defensive backs, or athletes. Going to be interesting to see how the numbers work out in this class.

  9. Something must be amiss with the Ole Miss commit. Since that time he has received offers from Duke, Arkansas and us.

That doesn't have anything to do with the stability of his commitment. Players still receive offers after they commit, and schools still offer kids after they commit. Now if he is taking visits to those schools, then maybe his commitment isn't that solid.
  10. BillySee58, my comments were not directed at you. I appreciate your research and knowledgsble posts. My comments were for the person that is the opposite. I think it is quite obvious who that would be.

Thank you. I wasn't necessarily responding as if they were. I was just pointing out that it was not out of line for people to feel disappointied about only having 1 commitment prior to yesterday.

But, as we all know, recruiting is a marathon and it doesn't matter if you feel disappointed in the class in June. How the class ends up on signing day is infinitely more important. And yes, to say this coaching staff can't recruit based on how things stand in mid-June is ridiculous, IMO.

  11. I know people like to use rivals and they have been doing recruiting for a while, but they do not list all the offers. This year they have been very late on updating players and only seem interested in the big names that will produce articles for subscribers to read. 247 has closed the gap. These sites depend on the recruits for thier info.

If the recruit does not contact them or post it on twitter, the sites wont know. Offers very close to signing day wont get posted and that is understandable because it is so much activity and actual signings and commits are more important.

Which is what I said. Rivals is all about their pay sub-sites. Like Tidesports, Aggieyell, etc. All of the big schools have their rivals subsites and big enough fanbases to drive enough subscriptions to pay for multiple insiders. Basically having multiple Brett Vitos dedicated solely to recruiting for that school. Always updating who that school has offered and who visits

We don't have one anymore, and a lot of smaller schools don't. Therefore it takes longer for them to update small programs like us. ESPN, Scout, and 247 have local correspondents like Gabe Brooks or Damon Sayles who help keep everything up to date. They're more concerned about keeping each player's offer list up to date. And yes, it is mostly done on twitter, so hard to tell legitimacy.

But going back, it's even harder to find out players' offer lists. Go back before 2006 and you really only see who the kid signed with, unless he had offers from big schools. Point was, you can't find a UNT defensive commit/signee with a better listed offer list. And there probably hasn't been during the recruiting website era.

  12. That's not Caleb. His cousin for Longview is Dez, but Chris may be related as well.

Davis and Rutherford have been on the borderline for grades. Mac even said so on signing day. H-Town is right about the double signing.

What does concern me is how late they signed. They double signed with Kilgore in May. I hope that doesn't mean as they got closer to graduation they realized they may not qualify and had to double sign. Hopefully they qualify.

  13. Did a little research to help put some perspective on how big a commitment this is. In the era of recruiting websites and databases, Miller may be the most highly recruited defensive commitment we've received in the rivals/recruiting website era.

Looking at our most highly recruited players as far back as the websites allow you to look, we haven't received a commitment from a player with a better offer list. Some other highly recruited players we've had include Chad Davis (2013) who held a Texas Tech offer and about 8 total, DeWaylon Cook (2008) who held offers from TCU, Utah, and West Virginia, and Kerry Swarn (2011) who held an Arizona and Iowa offer. Keep in mind that TCU and Utah were in the Mountain West when they offered Cook.

It's hard to truly tell whether or not all of a players offers are listed, or if all listed offers are truly committable. Especially the further back in the past you look, on rivals, etc. But based on the information given, Sam Miller has more total listed offers, 11, than all of those other players and has offers from schools in Oregon State and Kansas State, 2 schools from power conferences that have been ranked in the top 25 at some point during the past 2 seasons.

Hopefully the kid works his tail off and the coaches keep working at maintaining a firm commitment from Sam. Could be a very good one.
