  1. LAS VEGAS – The UNT women’s soccer team opened the 2023 season with a 3-0 win at UNLV on Thursday night. The win improves the Mean Green’s streak to 12 straight season opening wins and 17 straight years without a season opening loss. On Thursday in Las Vegas, UNT, which features 15 newcomers to its roster, got offensive production from its returners as sophomore Summer Brown and seniors Jenna Sheely and Devyn Flannery scored for the Mean Green (1-0). “The win was huge and well-deserved,” Flannery said. “It's always exciting to grab a road win, especially in Vegas. Tonight was a compete team effort and it gives us a lot of momentum going into our season.” Flannery scored the second goal of the match, which came in the 32nd minute. She received the through ball from sophomore Kat Burnell and then stepped inside to beat the defender and fired off a left-footed shot. Thursday was her first regular season match played since having knee surgery last year, which cut her season short. She came off the bench against the Rebels (0-1) and played 20 minutes. Her goal was her first and only shot of the night. Flannery has scored now eight career goals and is the program’s active career leader in goals scored for UNT. “I love our depth tonight and our fight throughout the game,” head coach John Hedlund said. “Nothing comes easy on the road but I challenged their mental toughness playing in this heat and they came through with a 3-0 shoutout.” Sheely got the scoring started for UNT on Thursday in the 11th minute. The fifth-year senior caught the UNLV keeper off her line and fired the shot from well over 30 yards away that connected for her team’s first goal of the season. It’s the midfielder’s sixth career goal. Brown added the third goal for North Texas in the 56th minute. The sophomore who was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team last year scored from the top of the 18-yard box after a deflection from a free kick came right towards her. She beat the UNLV keeper to the right. It was Brown’s fifth career goal. Newcomer Maddie Ogden was named the season opening starting goalkeeper by Hedlund Ogden made six saves in route to the shutout road win for her new team. North Texas returns home on Sunday to host Northwestern State for it season home opener. Sunday’s match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. CT and will be streamed on ESPN+. 5. Oregon State may soon have an answer as to where it is headed in conference alignment. Athletic director Scott Barnes told The Oregonian/OregonLive on Wednesday that Oregon State is committed to rebuilding the Pac-12, starting with the remaining four schools of Washington State, Stanford, California and OSU. Those four schools were left out on Aug. 4 when five Pac-12 schools accepted invitations to join the Big Ten and Big 12 beginning with the 2024-25 school year. That followed Colorado’s departure for the Big 12 the previous week, and USC and UCLA’s announcement last year that they would leave the Pac-12 at the end of the 2023-24 school year Read more: https://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/2023/08/oregon-state-may-be-days-from-a-decision-on-start-of-a-rebuilt-pac-12.html?outputType=amp
  6. The only AAU’s in Texas are Texas, Texas A&M and Rice. I have no idea if we could ever get in but I suppose it is a big deal that USF did.

  11. Michael Kelly said American Athletic Conference members have held several meetings with commissioner Mike Aresco over the past week. TAMPA — American Athletic Conference members have spoken about the possibility of adding schools left behind during the most recent round of conference realignment. USF athletic director Michael Kelly said Friday that he and administrators from other conference schools have been in communication with AAC commissioner Mike Aresco after six Pac-12 schools announced their departures for other conferences in recent weeks. The remaining Pac-12 members — Washington State, Oregon State, Cal and Stanford — would be considered among the best schools left behind by this round of realignment. ESPN’s Heather Dinich first reported last week that the AAC was open to adding a combination of all four schools from the Pac-12. read more: https://www.tampabay.com/sports/bulls/2023/08/11/michael-kelly-aac-conference-realignment-pac-12-cal-stanford-mike-aresco/?outputType=amp
  12. Theoretically they won’t be kicking anyone out. They will form a new conference. So we will still be in the AAC but will have to backfill the teams that leave with CUSS and the Belch. Yuk!
  13. You talking about Jaylin? I thought he was primarily special teams. https://meangreensports.com/sports/football/roster/jaylen-smith/5986
  14. That guy is on the dole with SMUt. No wat TCU and Baylor and Tech will EVER let SMUt in now.
  15. So why are we limiting ourself to the Pac4? I have been saying all along we should go after the cream of the Mountain West schools as well. This reporter seems to agree there is some value there.
