  1. You know...you could've stretched this into two different polls if you would've split corners and safeties...maybe even three if you went strong and free safety. Mine has gotta be Jeremy Pearl...who almost single-handedly is responsible for me setting the vertical leap record at the Superdome...and I did it about 30 times...following his 27 yard interception return for a touchdown against Cincinati. A close second is the most -flamboyant personality I've ever known to where Green...the great Don McGee.
  2. Well...as seems to frequently occur on here...I seem to be the minority in my opinion of whats happening on Fry Street...and as GMG's faaaaar-left resident I do atleast feel the need to chime in: Denton has done an decent job in its city planning...but allowing corporate interests into the Fry St. area I feel is a huge mistake. I appreciate and want Denton to expand...and for the most part its focus has been the 288 area, and the new Rayzor Ranch area...while Denton's history and unique culture is focused on the downtown square and Fry St...and the aesthetic of these areas needed to be protected. Instead of knocking down an entire city block and replacing it with a cookie cutter corporate shopping center, the focus of these new investors should've been required to have been placed on building improvement and tenant replacement....identifying which tenants were important to the area (The Tomato, Cool Beans, Chopsticks) and which could be replaced to improve the area. These were not decrepid buildings, and these were not struggling businesses. Uptown Dallas does not need to be across the street from Luck Lou's...and no the answer isn't to knock down Lou's to put in an Apple store with an overpriced 600 square foot apartment above it. I would love to see this type of development in Rayzor Ranch...or even better the University St. area. For Uptown, Dallas has Deep Ellum. For Victory Park, Dallas has Lower Greenville. For Knox-Henderson, Dallas has Lakewood. Dallas should by no means be our model...but most cities and large towns work in this way. There is a unique-ness to each of these areas...and a city works to encourage diversity in what makes these particular areas appealing. If I every here talk of putting a Chilis on the downtown square...I swear I'm running for Mayor...and I hope that you'll support my Pro UNT, Pro Loophole platform.
  3. I was never overlly impressed by Roderick...he kinda reminded me of Harold Edwards...a decent talent who lived off in his own little world. With the class of talent that continues to transfer out of bigger programs, and hopefully with our continued improvement, it seems that when filling scholarships after next year we could do better.
  4. The Sun Belt Conference is celebrating its 30th anniversary...and in honor the have comprised a list of their top 30 SBC athletes from each of the 19 sports. Joe Greene was named the All-Time SBC football player...and Darrell Dickey the All-Time SBC Head coach. Also represented from UNT RB Abner Hayes and DL Brandon Kennedy.
  5. If nobody else will make note of the inherent humor in this statement, I will. Well played.
  6. I meant Kordell...but Randle El is similar. I think it's Meager's friends and family coming on here to say he's going to be the best number 7 since Elway. The Daniel Meager I've seen trips over his own feet, misses 3 yard out routes and while there is potential there, overall he seems to lack confidence.
  7. Was that similar to trying to get into Memphis' head 12 minutes into the tourney game. I have no problem with an overrated chant with 2 minutes left in a game, but from what I recall of the last WKU game we were up 20 at the half, let Courtney Lee know what our opinion of him was, and ended up winning by 4, with Lee tying a season high with 25 points. I also attibuted it to the Talons because I was hoping that only they could've been so basketball ignorant to have started it. I was hoping to give you more credit than that Emmitt...
  8. Meager had two long passes and everyone wants to say he was head and shoulders above the competition. Woody Wilson makes plays, and throws the ball just as well as Meager...the knock on him is he doesn't have the best head and frequently let the play clock expire (he even managed to do it twice in the hurry up spring game). If Matt Phillips never throws another pass for UNT, I doubt that I'll shed a tear. Tune strikes me as a pure pocket guy, and that doesn't fit well in Dodge's system. Also those who feel that simply because Vizza is a freshman he couldn't possibly be more capable than any of the quarterbacks on our roster may be giving Phillips and company too much credit. Vizza is one of the best quarterback recruits we've landed and he's familiar with the system. If he proves to be the most capable following two a days, the job should be his...nothing better for a rebuilding/reloading project than to expose Vizza to D1 game speed than against the likes of Sooner and Roothog. My support is behind Woody...but I also like the idea of using him in a Kordell Stewart like role. The biggest thing is that we name a QB...and unless he's just absolutly horrible...he remains the starter for the entire season.
  9. Continuing my way too early look at the Sun Belt...a look at the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers: Projected Starters: PG. Tyrone Brazelton 5'11" 170 Sr.SG. Courtney Lee 6'5" 200 Sr.SF. Stepffon Pettigrew 6'5" 220 Fr.PF. Jeremy Evans 6'9" 200 Soph.C. Japeth Aguilar 6'9" 210 Jr.Frontcourt: Stepffon Pettigrew (6'5" 220 Fr.) is the first Kentucky Mr. Basketball to sign with the Hilltoppers since 1958. Former recipients include Tennessee guard Chris Lofton, Rex Chapman, Allan Houston and former USA coach John Pelphry. Pettigrew put up 33.6ppg and 13.8rpg in his senior year...yet had a sub-par showing in the Kentucky - Indiana all star game, scoring just 6 points in 25 minutes; reports said he was having trouble getting free for any clean looks and may've been in a bit over his head. If Pettigrew struggles, Courtney Lee is rather a nice insurance policy to slide over to the 3. Lee (6'5" 200 Sr.) has been a star in the Sun Belt since he was named freshman of the year in '04-'05. Lee led the Toppers in scoring (17.3ppg) was second in rebounding (4.6rpg) and despite what the Talons thought...is by no means overrated and should be a top candidate for SBC player of the year. Jeremy Evans (6'9" 200 Soph.) enjoyed a successful freshman campaign, averaging 7.0ppg and a team leading 5.7rpg in a platoon role with Daniel Emerson (6'8" 230 Jr). Emerson, who was very highly touted coming out of Georgia, underachieved in his time in Bowling Green and transfered to play with his older brother at Mercer. The remainder of the frontcourt remains a question. Japeth Aguilar (6'9" 210 Jr) is the first Filipino born player to play D-1 basketball, and has a difficult transition to make from Ateneo de Manila University in the Phillippeans. Boris Siakam (6'7" 225 Sr.) gave a solid contibution last season in limited minutes (4.5ppg, 3.2rpg). The status of A'Darius Pegues (6'9" 230 Soph?) is intriguing. Recruited before last season, Pegues failed to qualify, but his return, while unofficial at the moment, seems to be a done deal. D.J. Magley (6'10" 260 Fr.) is a beast...and is said to have rather deft moves for his size (16.4ppg, 12.0 rpg, 8.0 apg). Mike Walker (6'7" 220 Sr.) and Matt Maresca (6'8" 215 Jr.) both made contributions last season and will provide depth.Backcourt: Including Lee, five of the the Hilltoppers six leading returning scorers are guards. Tyrone Brazelton (5'11" 170 Sr.) made an immediate impact in his first season at WKU. The JUCO transfer finished second on the team in scoring (12.8 ppg) led the team in assists (4.0apg) and was the only Topper to start all 33 games. Three combo guards round out the Western backcourt. Ty Rogers (6'3" 195 Sr.), Orlando Mendez-Valdez (6'2" 180 Jr.) and A.J. Slaughter (6'3" 180 Soph.) combined to score nearly 25 points per game last season in a reserve / spot start role. Mendez-Valdez led the group in scoring (9.4ppg) and assists (3.0apg) and shot a team high 48% from the 3pt line. Rogers is capable of the big scoring game, dropping 27 against FAU, good for the team high for the season. Slaughter had a successful freshman campaign, and while his role probably won't increase much this season, WKU fans are expecting a lot from Slaughter once Lee moves on. Freshman B.J. Frazier, (6'6" 210) is a Rivals three star recruit out of Georgia, but in a crowded backcourt will have to really impress to see any significant time. Walk-ons Desire Gabou (6'2" 185 Jr) and Adam Howard (5'11" 180 Sr.) complete the roster. Summary: Courtney Lee automatically makes this team a contender. WKU went 12-6 and finished second in the SBC East last season and many fans felt they under-achieved. If Pettigrew is ready, the Toppers are loaded at the one, two and three...and capable of some very versatile lineups. The frontcourt may determine whether this team can overtake South Alabama in the East. While Emerson had yet to deliver, many bigs figure things out in their junior year so his departure may have fans wondering "what if." Evans is an active over-achiever, but an increase in his productivity from last season is doubtful. The biggest wild-card could be Magley, who for his age and size is said to be a polished post product. At the very least, WKU will have seven players 6'7" or bigger and have the potential to be one of the more bruising teams in the guard dominated SBC. USA is still the team to beat in the East, but look for the Toppers to finish second again and certainly not to be a team you want to see in the SBC tourney.
  10. George Marshall...nobody could drop a touchdown pass like him.
  11. Will they have to practice third down draw plays on the Dickey Practice Fields?
  12. Its a good thing we play UNT early in the season. Their offensive system will still be a little rusty and we should be able to take advantage of that. I sure wouldn't want to tangle with them later in the year. Dodge will have them in mid season form for the OU game...31-21 UNT over SMU
  13. So this guy will be playing the in 2007? Is it possible to go back and edit our "Who will score the first touchdown" thread to accomidate the OSU version of RW McQuarters (not the NFL version...nobody wants that)
  14. I'll being doing one of these for every team in the coming weeks. As for Emerson, as for March 29th he was released from his scholarship and has transfered to Mercer...but WKU has a small but very talent group of newcomers. I may write them up tomorrow
  15. Its a shame you guys never reproduced...that kid could've been a good basketball player...blocking shots with his third arm and all.
  16. should Jesse make cousin joke...should Jesse make cousin joke.....grrrrrrrrr.......its soooooo hard not tooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.
  17. that chick had some game...and you know what...yea, I probably would.
  18. The basketball board has been a bit quiet as of late so I figured I would start compiling a preview of the upcoming (5 month away) basketball season to give some idea of what our Mean Green having standing between them and another NCAA automatic bid. I figured the best place to start...is where we left off...with the Arkansas State Indians: Projected Starters: PG Stephon Weaver 6'2" 185 Fr.SG Adrian Banks 6'3" 200 Sr.SF Shawn Morgan 6'6" 215 Sr.PF Isaac Wells 6'8" 225 Sr.C Abayomi Ajasin 6'7" 235 Sr.Frontcourt: It wasn't too terribly unexpected that ASU forward Isaac Wells (6'8" 225 Sr.) would withdraw his name from the NBA draft...and because of it this will once again be the team to beat in the Sun Belt. Wells led the Indians in rebounding (8.3 rpg) and was second in scoring and third in assists (15.8ppg, 2.3 apg) and was only getting better as the seasoon progressed. Wells is a versitille player with range out to the 3 pt. line (32% 3pt) and can play the 3 or the 4. Joining Wells is swingman Shawn Morgan (6'6" 215 Sr.). Morgan fills the role of "glue guy" for the Indians...averaging 6.8ppg, 4.8rpg, 1.8apg while shooting 46% from the field. Center Theo Little...who was anything but (6'11" 260) is gone. Filling his role will be a 3 man rotation of Kewain Gant (6'7" 225 Sr.), Abayomi Ajasin (6'7" 235 Sr.) and junior college transfer Larry Handy (6'7" 260 Jr.). Gant and Ajasin were simply bodies last season...each averaging 2.6ppg...with Ajasin contributing a solid 3.0rpg in about 12mpg. The most intruiging of the Indians' newcomer is JC transfer Yima Chia-Kur (6'6" 225 Jr.). Chia-Kur is a shorter version of Wells...a 3-4 combo who averaged very solid numbers (18.5ppg, 5.7rpg, 1.2 apg) at Garden City CC in one of the best JC conferences. The combination of Wells and Chia-Kur on the floor at the same time could be a potent frontcourt. Ashton Farmer (6'7" 230 Soph. - 1.6ppg, .7rpg) and freshman Chris Malcolm (6'7" 205) round out the frontcourt.Backcourt: Adrian Banks (6'3" 200 Sr.) makes the Indians go. The dynamic SG was the SBC newcomer of the year last season after averaging 21.1ppg, 4.4rpg, 1.9apg and shot nearly 50% from the field and 48% from the 3pt line. UNT controlled Banks in their last 2 matchups, scoring 14 and 12 point on a combined 9-27 from the field. Ryan Wedel (5'11" 175 Soph.) surprised a lot of people with his immediate contribution, finish third on the team in scoring (10.7ppg) and second in assists (2.8apg). Wedel almost exclusivly contributed from the 3pt line, knocking down 40%, and 214 of his 257 shot attempts (83%) came from behind the 19'9". PG Jim Jones (6'3" 190) is gone. Jones was fourth in scoring (7.7ppg) and led the team in assists with a paltry 3.2apg. Reserve guard Yual Banks contribution was minimal (2.2ppg, 0.9 apg) causing the backcourt to be Nutt's recruiting focus. The Indians signed 5 guards...3 JUCOS and 2 freshmen...all of whom will have the chance to contribute right away. P.J. Keaton (6'4" 170 Jr. - 16.3ppg, 3.8rpg at Lincoln College), Ifeanyi Koggu (5'11" 178 Jr. - 8.0 ppg, 7.0 apgat Tyler JC), Michael Lance (6'3" 185 Jr. - 12.5ppg, 5.2 rpg) Jeremy Thomas (6'5" 195 Fr. - 13.0ppg, 60% fgp) and Stephon Weaver (6'2 185 Fr. - 16.5 ppg, 6.0apg). The freshmen may be the best of the group...Thomas is an uber-athlete who won the Arkansas state high school high jump compition and Weavor was pursued by the likes of Arkansas, Ok. State and Xavier. Another interesting player is Chris Brown (6'2" 190). Brown, a JC transfer from the '06 class was starting a solid season (13 games, 8 starts - 5.7ppg, scored double digits 3 times)...however his last game was in early December and his status with the team is uncertain. Summary: This has got to be the favorite to win the Sun Belt. The Indians return over 85% of their scoring...including 6 of their top 8 scorers...from a team the was the tourney runner-up. Point guard and post are a concern...but at the 2,3 and 4 spots this team is as deep and talented as anyone in the belt.
  19. In the past 3 days I've wanted to go from strangling Plumm...to giving him the biggest hug it may accomplish both of my goals. He could not be more right on with his sentiment. UNT has a fair amount of tradition...yet so few people know about it because we don't honor our true legends. Someone a few weeks ago started a thread for a UNT Mt. Rushmore...and I don't recall DD making the majority of people's lists. Hayden Fry, Joe Greene, Abner Hayes, Steve Ramsey, Booger Kennedy, Ray Renfro...these are legit football names who have absolutly no recognition at our school. You could ask the average GOOD sports fan at UNT who Hayden Fry was and his answer is the former coach of Iowa...most don't even realize he coached here. Why? Because we haven't addequatly honored him. Andrew Smith brought us a bowl victory and deserves some sort of memorial. Was he ever going to be a legendary player? No, probably not...but he is a huge part of UNT football history whose tragically early passing deserves some sort of respect DD was also a HUGE part of our football story. While he did strive for mediocrity...that mediocrity did bring us 4 bowl games and one bowl win. It brought us wins over Texas Tech and Baylor...and we shouldve beat TCU in Ft. Worth in 02...but he also gave a big F@CK YOU to the school on his way out. All that having been said...there is a place on the UNT campus for something named after Darrell Dickey...just not yet. It has been less than a year since he's been fired...less than a year since the black jersey fiasco...and clearly it is still weighing heavy on the mind of many UNT fans and there needed to be some time allowed to pass. If nothing else...it sends a TERRIBLE message to Todd Dodge. DD was 41-62 (I believe) AND that is worthy of immediate gratification...it shows the level of mediocrity this school is willing to accept. DD should be honored in some way...however the line he should've waited in is long and formed to the left...guess he knew the bouncer
  20. Had K.D. not lost his temper and had the season we all expected...and he worked hard on his handles...he would've been the closest thing since Shawnson Johnson or Chris Davis. IMO the player who may get a long look from some team in summer league is Rich Young (if he's interested). 6'5" 200, a solid outside shot (when he decidees to actually shoot...man he needed to shoot more) more than strong enough for the league and he plays some great defense...poor man's Bruce Bowen.
  21. If you just felt a breeze...I believe that is the collective sigh of releif from the Mean Green Basketball nation. Best wishes to Benny Valentine...but using our last scholarship on a 4th point guard...and these would be 4 pure point guards, no combos...would've been poor management.
  22. UNT wins the toss and defers their option until the second half. OU takes the opening kick out to the 32. Allen Patrick takes 5 hand offs and picks up 3 first downs down to the UNT 24...Joey Halzle then hooks up on a slant to Juaquin Iglesias to the UNT 13...then a stop route to Joe Jon Finley to the UNT 2. First and Goal. Toss right to Patrick is blown up by a great hit on the corner from Colt Mahan. Second and Goal from the 4...Halzle throws a fade for Quentin Chaney which is deflected away by Latif Nurudeen. Third and Goal. Halzle runs play action...Aaron Weathers slips and Joe Jon Finley is wide open in the end zone...but Dominique Green who came on a blitz hits Halzle and the ball pops loose and scooped up by Brandon Monroe who takes off in towards paydirt. He reaches the 50 and the play is blown dead...and the Big 12 refs call a clear fumble an incomplete pass. Garrett Hartley kicks a 22 yard field goal. Micah Mosely then returns the ensuing kick off 97 yards for a touchdown
  23. This paricular jersey sported by Evan Robertson...yes...this is simply a practice jersey...and was used not as means of style but rather a classless message from DD. But how about an actuall black 3rd uniform? Is the stigma of the black jersey to engrained now to be accepted? With the new lighter green as the trim to a white number...this could look pretty clean.
  24. Hands down the best moment of any of these games (or rather post games) was being in the alcohol, party and debautery capital of the U.S....New Orleans...in 2002 following our win over Cincinati and actually being responsible for the closing of Bourbon St. UNT shut down Bourbon Street. Theres something I doubt any other school can claim. Few things are more intimidating than being a hammered 20 year old, walking around a foreign city and being yelled out by mounted police officers...and giving them a good-strong CAW_CAW
