  1. The SBC had two bids the year before last. CUSA had two bids the year after they were raided by the Big East, and only one bid a year since. That bid has gone, and will probably continue to go, exclusively to Memphis. Moving to CUSA may or may not help in football, I don't know. I know that CUSA is just as much an afterthought during sports coverage as the Belt is. For basketball, however, CUSA would absolutely devastate this program.
  2. Attendance would not double for regularly bringing in CUSA schools. It wouldn't even come close to that. Coverage would only be higher when we play a "local" school. Again, unless you think that we can top Memphis or that CUSA is going to start getting multiple bids, there's absolutely no way it's a better basketball conference for us.
  3. Most NT fans won't travel from Carrollton to Denton, so I wouldn't worry too much about that. Second, the current CUSA setup is the "Memphis Conference" where Memphis dominates everyone in the league and then gets the sole bid to the tourney in March. The bottom half of the conference is as bad or worse than the bottom half of the Sunbelt. I can somewhat see the draw for football, although I think being in a conference with four other Texas schools hurts recruiting. In basketball, the CUSA just makes very little sense at all. That is unless you never want to be active again well into March.
  4. Agreed with everything except for CUSA. Last thing I want for athletics, and especially basketball, is to be dragged down with SMU, Rice, and Tulane. UTEP, Houston, and Tulsa are fine, but they wouldn't draw that many more people to the games than any other D1 opponent, imo.
  5. Don't know how it's changed since I've been there, but the concessions used to be as bad/worse than a high school football game. Get someone in there that does something other than warming up gigantic buckets of imitation cheese and pouring it over tostitos. Take a cue from the Rangers who have a regular concession or two, and then a specialty for fries or fajita dogs, or whatever. There needs to be a team store somewhere in the Super Pit. It brings in money from bored people, and allows first timers or people who can't get to the UU to have some NT gear. It seems like such a no-brainer, but I guess it isn't? I'm also in favor of a traditional scoreboard over the court. I know it would probably cost $1m or more, but it would do amazing things for the atmosphere. On gameday, I think they should have banners like the one below (with SOW and "Mean Green" on it, of course) at least on the side of the Pit that faces NT Blvd. DIMMABLE LIGHTS! I know it's a huge investment, and don't know what the payoff would be, but having dimmable lights and a scoreboard at the center of the arena with some sort of production right before the players are introduced? I'm sure there are other things that could be improved, but that's my list for now.
  6. Agreed. We just haven't changed our mindset to that of a good basketball program. The AD is trying to pad the win column to increase attendance instead of allowing the team to make quality wins that actually count when March comes around.
  7. A chance? CU is terrible. Hawkins is gone after this year and his son will ride the pine next year.
  8. Bottom 10 is out (Spoiler: No North Texas ) Re: that article. Even if the conference doesn't find its way into a BCS bowl this year, would this type of article have even been contemplated a year or two ago? It would have been laughed right off the internet. Small steps.
  9. Yeah, I can't believe Bush and Cheney got away with it for so many years.
  10. The Sioux already want the mascot changed, and unless their stance changes in the next few weeks, the Fighting Sioux will be no more after August of next year. Then all we'll ever hear about the Sioux is their drunken bar fights.
  11. The one in 2004? That game was heavily promoted (for basketball anyways), and still only drew about 3600 people according to MGS. I would rather have schools like UTEP, Houston, and Tulsa come in regularly, than TCU. Even if it ends up being average attendance, those would be quality wins. Just checked Yahoo! and you're right. For the size of crowds they get in Waco, they sure do travel terribly.
  12. Some people may recognize Boise State more than, um, yeah... Bringing Boise State into Denton would be no different than bringing in Northern Illinois. On top of that we're handing over a guarantee game to a school that is at our same level in basketball. That just blows my mind. Post of the day.
  13. How are we playing a guarantee game against Boise State? lol. I'm sorry, but that's just straight up terrible scheduling. Not that anyone would really give a crap if the Broncos came to Denton, but to give a guarantee game to such a small time program is embarrassing.
  14. I respect the MAC. They have a very tight footprint, some decent football stadiums, three bowl tie-ins, and some pretty good rivalries built over a decent chunk of history. That said, the SBC is passing them in facilities, on-the-field/court product, and interest. Right now the conferences are pretty even, which is pretty well represented by our trade-offs in wins and losses. In the future, however, I think they're going to have a harder time keeping up with the SBC, WAC, MWC, and CUSA, because (unfortunately) that area of the country is dying.
  15. I was thinking that we played in Stillwater in '06 and that was our return trip. Looked at the schedules and CMJ was right.
  16. Yeah, you're right; forgot about that. Still think we shouldn't do anything that isn't a one and one.
  17. Baylor, SMU, and TCU won't fill crap. People don't even want to see them play at their own home arenas. I also wish we'd start refusing to play schools who don't offer a one and one. There's no reason Oklahoma State can't make the trip to Denton.
  18. My concern with Texas State-San Marcos being added to the SBC is its ability to draw on gameday. San Marcos is fairly small, UT-Austin is just up the road, and the same will go for UT-SA. Can TS-SM really flourish in such a situation?
  19. NT has never backed NT the way it should have before a few years ago. As Fouts (and new stadium) on Saturdays and the Super Pit become the place to be in Denton, more and more people will show up. It's going to take a few more years of North Texas giving a crap about itself before Denton embraces the school.
  20. Pretty sure we're thinking the same thing, but I never want the culture of this university to go away. What I want to go away is the academics vs. athletics bickering, and the apathy towards athletics. As the campus, facilities, and perimeter around the campus change, I think much of the pride issues will be taken care of. For a lot of alumni and some current students, North Texas wasn't their first choice. It may not have even been their second choice. As the campus and surrounding area transforms, and admissions requirements continue to climb, we will take on more and more people who want to be at North Texas, and that will make all the difference. Year after year I saw fewer and fewer people wearing other school's logos, and started to see people being chastised for wearing them. At the same time, the amount of people wearing North Texas gear rose considerably. Can you imagine 10 or 15 years from now? On topic: I want to see Coach Dodge succeed because he respects the athletes, the school, and himself. DD I never liked. He talked about any game that wasn't against a Sunbelt opponent as if we had absolutely no chance. He talked trash about the school and the town. He had absolutely no control over the players, and honestly didn't really care. Yes he brought the SBC championships, but part of me believes that any halfway decent coach could have; he was just in the right place at the right time. There's a reason he was never plucked from NT for greatness at a BCS school.
  21. Hard to remember after seeing thousands of movies, but here's what I can think of off the top of my head. The Matrix Dojo fight between Neo and Morpheus, "You think that's air you're breathing?" Full Metal Jacket Pyle's breakdown in the bathroom. Snatch Bullet tooth Tony's monologue @ Vincent, Sol, and Tyrone Back to the Future First time Marty sees the Delorean travel through time (fire tracks below him and Dr. Brown) Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle Seeing Doogie Howser speeding down the road with strippers. The Bourne Identity Beating up the cops in the park. Clerks The whole dicks conversation, lol. Pulp Fiction The Gold Watch. Shaun of the Dead Fighting zombies with unwanted records.
  22. Yeesh. I won't comment on the list, but this is patently false. To misquote Homer Simpson: "Everyone knows Green Day attained perfection in 1994. It's a scientific fact."
