  1. And none would... but we should. UNT needs to become a springboard job for the top coaches of the future.
  2. He was coaching high school two years ago.. I don't want to go down this road again....
  3. Yeah, how can you apply for a job for which you're not interested? This is standard denial until he accepts whatever job he wants.
  4. "What does the knee have to do with it?"
  5. Wussification? Seriously? CTE has been found in 87 out of 91 deceased NFL players. That is 96%. And 131 out of 165 of former players from high school and college - almost 80%. This isn't wussification, it is a very serious medical problem with a sport that is very violent. And it is a problem that the NFL KNEW about. This isn't about a "risk" of brain damage, it's becoming clear that CTE is almost certain to occur in football players of all levels. Quote: "Forty percent of those who tested positive were the offensive and defensive linemen who come into contact with one another on every play of a game, according to numbers shared by the brain bank with FRONTLINE. That finding supports past research suggesting that it’s the repeat, more minor head trauma that occurs regularly in football that may pose the greatest risk to players, as opposed to just the sometimes violent collisions that cause concussions." CTE is degenerative, meaning symptoms get worse even after you stop playing. The damage causes unexplained moods, loss of cognitive functions, aggressive behavior, and degradation of motor functions. Wussification? Well when your boys are drooling idiots in a wheelchair who can't remember their football glory days, you can pride yourself in saying "Hey, I didn't let them be wussies!"
  6. She becomes the first woman ever to head any of the ten Football Bowl Subdivision leagues.
  7. What is your deal??? No, we want someone who is going to move on to a better job in 4 or 5 years.
  8. He wasn't fired on the field. And you don't hand the microphone to a guy you just fired.
  9. "...but the front door to any large university is its athletic program." I do believe the University of Chicago once had a stellar football team. So did Harvard and Yale. The "front porch" or "front door" of a university (two phrases used today by the DRC and the univ President) is athletics. It means that is usually the primary nexus of students, faculty, and staff to gather. It is the most visible part of a university. While you can provide anecdotal evidence of students choosing a college for a variety of reasons other than athletics, the fact remains that the most likely reason a high school kid applies to Texas or Florida or Ohio State is because a family member went there and/or they are a fan of the athletics program. Athletics is marketing, like it or not.
  10. Consistent winning will bring in fans. Plain and simple. You can't get mad that people don't show up to watch losers.
  11. I think you have this backwards. Apathy is a symptom of the disease - losing. Losing is a disease, as contagious as polio. Losing is a disease, as contagious as syphilis. Losing is a disease, as contagious as bubonic plague. Ah, but curable. Now, I want you to imagine you are on a ship at sea, on a vast calm ocean gently rocking.
  12. No, I do not see irony here. You fire bad coaches. You don't give 5-year extensions for one good season. Most importantly, our President needs to take notice that bad coaching hires can have a negative impact for years because potential candidates see us as a dead-end road.
  13. PFFT! Let's not get ridiculous. It makes too much sense to look at these guys.
  14. Let's face it. We'll never be national powerhouse - at least, not until we get a billionaire donor. That's OK. I think many of us would just like to be competitive for more than one season. But I look at our coaching history and wonder why any good coach would want to come here: McCarney - Fired Dodge- Fired Dickey - Fired Simon - Fired Parker- Fired Nelson - Fired No coach wants to come here and end up with a pink slip and coaching high school again. When you interview for a job, how thrilled would you be to hear the last six guys got canned? I always ask this question - what happened to the person who used to have this job? I want to hear they were promoted or left for a great opportunity. Look at Cincinnati's previous decade: Mark Dantonio - Left for Michigan State Brian Kelly - Left for Notre Dame Butch Jones - Left for Tennessee Tommy Tuberville - We'll see While limited in resources, the Bearcats provide enough to draw a coach good enough to win. Winning means the HC will probably get an offer or two to leave for a better job. Let them go! You can sell that pedigree in your next round of interviews. Of course, having the knowledge to find that diamond in the rough is key. Money will only fix so much. When we get a successful coach, DON'T extend their contract for more than a year. If it comes down to it, let them go to their next big job, and we can have our pick of the next hungry young coach from a line of candidates knocking down our doors.
  15. Rick didn't wave a magic wand and make these facilities happen. In the end, capital projects are BOR decisions. Any AD can raise money by hiring good people and good coaches. He raised money in spite of the bad hires. Someone else can do better by hiring better. If this isn't the right time to make a change at the top, WHEN WILL IT BE?!
  16. The mitigation clause could state that if he lands another job, we would only pay the difference or some kind of reduced flat compensation. Let's hope that is the case.
  17. Rick has 16 months left on his contract. His buyout would be somewhere in the neighborhood of ~$500k.
  18. All the more reason why RV should be let go. And probably the reason he won't be. We can't afford another buyout.
  19. The Ivy league went I-AA after the 81 season.
