  1. Rick I'm curious as to when it started going downhill? The 90s? When I was at UNT in the 80s it was relatively clean and certainly safe. Mainly college kids. I did notice when I visited in the early 90s that some hippies/bums were starting to hang out there, but at that time they were a distinct and tiny minority.
  2. Screw these guys. They get to play pro football; make a lot of money; become famous. And they act like thugs. I mean Chris Henry gets arrested four times in just over a year??? Jones interviewed by cops for ten incidents??? Geez. Kick them out of the league.
  3. College -- Since NT doesn't have a team, no one. Pro -- AL - Rangers, NL - Nationals
  4. ESPN.com says NT will play UCLA http://proxy.espn.go.com/ncb/region?group=1
  5. You think? I've actually never heard them, since I don't listen to CW. My point is, entertainers are just that - entertainers. Never understood why people invest singers or actors with such political importance. And to the person who scolded me for leaving out Henley's body of work from the 80s and 90s, I agree. There was some good stuff there. And you'll notice in my previous post, I referred to Hotel California and Desperado only "for starters."
  6. Don Henley v. Meatloaf -- I like Meatloaf. But Henley is in a different category altogether. Think "Hotel California" and "Desperado" just for starters. But he's just an entertainer. I couldn't care less what he does outside his music.
  7. Words right out of my mouth. But here's one you might guess. I met a Hall of Famer a couple years ago. He went to a non-Texas college but played for a Texas pro FB team. Was a huge star in the 70s. Still lives in the Metroplex. Unfortunately, we mainly discussed business and I was able to make only a passing reference to his glory days. He was shorter than I imagined. I also met Brooke Shields on a plane once. She was much taller than I imagined.
  8. yeah, one of the few things I liked about europe was the train system. Heavily subsidized, but very efficient. We have a national/regional train system -- amtrak. Unfortunately, it loses money and depends on govt subsidies. But given the chance, I would much rather take the train from DC to Texas when I go home for visits. The kicker is my wife agrees in principle, but would not agree to a multi-day travel time.
  9. Wonder if Tomato will sell off any relics like tables, wall murals, etc.
  10. Good point about the insane regulations. Flying is such a major hassle-- and uncomfortable -- now, and incidents like this only make train travel look more attractive. Fact is, passengers should not be forced to sit in an overcrowded, stifling plane for hours on end. They should be off-loaded from the plane after an hour or so and taken back to the terminal. For the life of me, I don't see how that breaches security.
  11. This is great! I will find get to listen to a UNT game. Maybe it will be broadcast on MASN, who knows. Sorry if this is a newbie question (I know how newbies were raked in another thread ), but are the games webcasted over KNTU.com?
  12. Thanks for the info. I'm glad Denton bars finally can sell mixed drinks. Never caught the logic of that whole unicard thing.
  13. Thanks for this post. BTW, sorry if this is old news, but what bar did you own there?
  14. I've been a huge opponent of the renovation, mainly because Fry St./Hickory was a big part of my time at NT. Unfortunately, though, with the exception of the Tomato, most of the places where I hung out -- Green Derby, The Library, State Club, Jim's Diner -- are gone now. I felt lucky when I was a student that there was a cool area to get together with my friends, eat, drink and listen to good music just across the street from the campus. It was a great atmosphere, and I'd hate for future students to miss out on something like that during their college life. But I'm becoming more ambivalent to this redevelopment project. Fry St. has really changed since I hung out there in the mid- to late-80s. Back then there wasn't a hippie problem. There were very few hippies at NT (although my girlfriend at the time was part of the nascent grunge movement). The crowds on Fry/Hickory were mainly students hanging out with friends, not the hippies and bums that people on this board talk about. And there were certainly no violent crimes as there are now. I was there recently and was appalled at how trashy and run-down the place has become. I truly hate to see the place turn in to basically a strip mall, but I also hate to see it degenerate into a hole and burn-out magnet.
  15. I like them both, but I'll go with Chicago. I hate New England, so pulling for the Colts in that game was a no-brainer. But I've liked Chicago since the 80s.
  16. Yeah, I was just making a joke. My point is, I like the springtime weather we've had up here whatever its cause.
  17. Unbelievable -- Texas is getting pounded by winter weather, meanwhile the mid-Atlantic was (until yesterday) basking in 70 degree spring-like weather. This global warming thing is confusing.
  18. Too bad I have a massively powerful chest. I still have an old green NTSU sweatshirt with the official seal on the front. Wonder how much that would pull down on Ebay?
  19. "Even when the weather is cold, cold, cold -- Appalchian is HOT! HOT! HOT!" That video is a fireable offense.
  20. A little perspective -- It was pretty bad in the late 60s - early 70s. The 80s were pretty bad -- I remember how some extremists were saying that Reagan killed people with AIDS, etc. And if you look at politics in the 19th century up to the Civil War and immediately after, it was pretty hateful. The only times in the 20th century when the political atmosphere was relatively calm was when the economy and society were stable and one party had complete legislative dominance.
  21. I got my wife a digital camera; my in-laws got me a leather-bound copy of the Federalist Papers (interesting only to political geeks, I know); and then after Christmas I bought a new home theater system.
