I think Burrow is a great example of no matter how much potential, some coaches are set on the type of QB they want and "better player" becomes subjective. Look at Fields. Same could be said. He was not going to start at Georgia and now he's looks to be a early draft pick. Side note - OSU QBs have not fared so well in the NFL. Will be curious to see how Fields does.

Your right, it's a two-way street. Do players get "asked" to look for other options, sure. But there are also many cases where backups stays at a school 4-5 years, contribute and get an education. While the intent is mostly good there will be cases where players make bad decisions based on emotions, not best-case. Hopefully, at some point those involved from all sides take a look at how the transferring impacts players completing their education. Most are not going to the next level, and some end up with no offers and no way to finish school. I just hope for FB it doesn't turn out like BB where it seems kids who doesn't play as soon, or as much as he wants to gets mad and leaves.

I agree that the scheme this past system seem to be a cluster F. I also understand that the coaches are ultimately responsible, but there also need to be accountability by the players. There seemed to be no buy-in by this unit on what was happening. When PB comes in if we see immediate marked improvement it will tell a lot. After the showing this year I find it hard to believe any player on Defense would not be ready for a change and a chance to show others what they can do. We talk about the S&C program - look at the Murphy Twins! Why are the progressing and getting bigger and stronger. Could it be they are a little more self disciplined? This past season with the protocols it was more on the players to workout and condition than in the past. Can things improve - always. But to say the S&C program does not work when there are many positive example is off-base

This. King is a very good player. he did what he thought was best for his "branding". He did what I worried Mason would. I am thankful Mason stayed true to UNT.
-
Guess they could photoshop his UNT highlights
-
Still think he had not been hurt he could have been drafted in a fair position
-
I think King is doing the right thing and staying in school another year. If he stay healthy he should greatly increase his draft value.
-
Then if he gets drafted it better say from North Texas 😇

@PlummMeanGreen If you look at the 247 transfer portal report you can go back and look at previous years and see where they ended up. If it does not show a school they either went to a non FBS/FCS school or did not find another home. It also does not confirm if they received a scholarship or walked-on https://247sports.com/Season/2021-Football/TransferPortal/

One of the keys for this, and most decisions, is who you get your advise from. The problem is most people want to hear only positives and not negatives so they limit who they ask. If you only ask those who will tell you what you want to be told then the risk probably increases. Being honestly critiqued is not easy for most, especially athletes who might have always been told how good they are.
-
Always a risk if you transfer that things won't work out the way you planned. Still curious as to why he left the way he did.

I would also think this past year with the protocols he spent a lot more one-on-one time with the players and got to know them better

Schools have access to see who enters. Once it is submitted the player is open to contact with any school, more or less. Most programs seem to have people assigned to view the portal to see who enters Student-athletes can provide an email address and a phone number where any interested coaches can contact them. Or student-athletes can decide not to provide contact information and reach out to the schools they are interested in attending.

This. If the Big Boys see a net gain it will stay around

He did not seem like someone who was a fan of sharing time at the position. Not sure what happened, but I agree this is not as big of a surprise as say, Tre S. -

If I see a posting of Emmitt going "home" to SMU, I might just give up -
Underclassmen had to petition for early entry by yesterday https://thespun.com/nfl/nfl-reportedly-sets-deadline-for-2021-draft-decisions So it looks like Seniors have a few more weeks. I guess if they stay in school and maintain eligibility they have time to test the waters and see if there is interest in them from NFL teams.

Each year many players who hit the portal are left without scholarship offers. Many end up walking on at other schools or dropping down Divisions -

I could be wrong, but under NCAA rules I believe once a player request into the portal the school is under no requirement to maintain financial support. https://lasvegassun.com/news/2019/may/06/how-does-the-ncaa-transfer-portal-work/ -

Just wondering - Is he enrolled this semester? If he is does he stay or take off? I wonder if UNT continues to pay their way after they request out as a rule, or if it is decided on a player by player review? -
Not sure why he failed at smu. smu has had 6 sub-.500 seasons since Bennet left. Some people are better coordinators than Head Coaches. Perhaps this is the case for him. Seems to have still been well thought of since then as a DC. Seems like one of the the that has helped other since Bennett left was smu changing the admissions standards to "legally" allow more players in back in 2010 and Dykes doing a good job with transfers.
