  1. I know it's been said before, but I really appreciate your due diligence on the recruiting front. You are like a football NT03.

I think Brett Vito appreciates it, also. You find the kids, he gets the interviews. Good combo.

Thank you. Love those things by Brett. Really helpful to know when those kids are planning on making their decision.
  2. I see what you're saying. But still, recruit this guy. He looks like he has length and speed. At this point and time we don't really need speed at this position, but we need length at the WR position pretty bad. I know North Texas has offered about 6 or 7 WR's and the majority of them have length. But this guy is not a "superstar" type of player that would come in with a sense of entitlement as you were saying that some players come in with. For goodness sake he was the 3rd leading receiver on his high school team with only 400 yards. I like his length and the fact that he is from a winning high school program. I like what he has to offer and I think he could flourish at North Texas.

Yes, we need more length on the outside, but we do need speed as well. We need guys who can win one on one matchups on the outside. Speed and length definitely help there.

Who said anything about a sense of entitlement?

  3. I'm not sure, but I think you're missing a very valid lesson we had to learn the hard way.

Todge's first classes were made up almost entirely of state champs.

There is definitely value in having kids that come from a winning culture, but we also learned from the bowl era that there is something to be said about kids that come in with an extra chip on their shoulder; kids that come from adversity. I think our best teams are the ones that have a balance.

To add to that, players from top programs have also been exposed to top-notch weight programs and coaching. Some programs over here are as close to college level from a weight training and even coaching standpoint.

The state of Texas is notorious nationwide for being a state where because of this emphasis on football, these kids are finished products by the time they get to college. Some people even believe that this is a major factor in the downfall of the Texas Longhorn program lately. They get these kids who have already plateaud before they get to college.

While I don't believe this to be true for the whole state of Texas, I do believe it to be partially true with the top programs over here. I played for one, and in my two years of varsity football I played with 18 guys who ended up signing D1 scholarships. Those guys either cracked the depth chart early on after arriving at their college or really never ended up doing so.

These schools like Allen and Southlake Carroll will absolutely maximize every bit of potential out of their players. Not to say they can't hit growth spurts in college or anything like that, but these kids from the top programs are as close to finished products as it comes. A lot of times it is a case of "what you see is what you get."

That being said, I still say recruit the heck out of DeSoto.

  4. Great job on these Brett!

The one thing that's standing out to me is when these guys plan on making their decision. A lot of them plan on waiting until after their senior season is over. Between FBS transfers like Sam Rice, the Jackson twins, possibly Blake Bean, 3 grayshirts (Chumley, Shaq Jackson, and Jon Graham) all counting towards this class, as well as potentially getting a few JUCOs this class, there may not be many spots left in this class by the time these kids' senior season are over.

Of course we'll have some spots left, and a few of these guys we'll make room for whenever they want to commit, but the spots will be more limited. Plenty of players who we offered early were no longer being recruited by us once their season was over. Then again, some of these kids may have a big senior season and get some bigger offers once it's over, like Xavier Washington. So it certainly can be a big gamble.

That being said, I think we're set to have one of the busiest and most exciting summers we've had since early commitments has become the trend.

  5. 6'4" 185 lb receiver from Itawamba CC in Fulton Mississippi. Very solid JUCO program. Teammate of DE Xavier Pegues, who we've offered. Another tall, outside receiver offer, McMillian had 441 yards and 4 touchdowns on 32 catches last year. Originally from Southhaven, Mississippi. We appear to be his first offer.

  6. What stood out to me in your list, and 97and03 I believe brought it up before as well, was players from the 2012 signing class. Mac's first class where he was able to recruit them for the whole cycle is now made up of juniors and redshirt sophomores. This is a big year for a lot of them.

We signed 22 high school kids that year, and 9 are no longer apart of this football team after just two seasons. Of the rest, only 1 has seen significant playing time in Carlos Harris. A few of the rest have yet to receive much playing time, but are in prime position to be in a rotation at least at their position this year. We really need these guys to step up for this year and going forward, as these guys will soon be counted on to be leaders if they aren't already.

  7. Highlights show he caught a few passes when wide open with no one in his face.

I think college LB's and safety's would rough him up.

Judging his ability is not easy with just a few highlight clips.

I say keep him at OT or guard. Guard may be his best spot on the OL.

This guy is a road grader! Very good at using his hands for pull downs,

holding opponents at bay, and laying down on a opponent.

Has a nasty demeanor for sure! Blindsided one guy on a play when down field.

Wiped the guy out. True OL guy!

I hope the staff can sign this guy! Give him a fighting chance!

The thing about him playing tight end for us is that he wouldn't need to go out for very many passes. If Chumley ends up moving to tight end, that's your passing threat at tight end for the future. This guy would be like Andrew Power or a taller Drew Miller, where you aren't asking much from them in the passing game. You wouldn't need him to do much more than catch wide open passes when the defense is sleeping on him and block.

Plus, we could see the coaches trim him down a little bit and focus on his speed, while keeping his weight at a decent number so it could still be an advantage. The coaches got Reinhardt down from I believe the 280s when he came in down to the 250s. Could see something similar with this kid, if we're lucky enough to land him.

  8. Ponyfans discussing whether or not he will even play QB -- he sounds like a great athlete but not a very accurate passer:

    http://www.ponyfans.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=72599&sid=61bfe4a400265f8260ceee4263311dd9

Back when he first committed to A&M I watched his sophomore highlights, since he was injured his junior year, and was very underwhelmed. It was all amazing rushing plays, but nothing of note passing the ball.

Then his senior year he went out and completed just 47.5% of his passes. But yeah, he's a tremendous athlete. Not much to be scared of from his arm.

  9. Well, uh, SMwho might pose as a bigger threat than I was anticipating. SMU signed a 5 star QB out of Arkansas last year. He's started the last few games of the season and was going to be the projected starter for them this season. He's a pocket passer so I hope he gets the start over this guy. Our defense isn't set up too well to defend dual threat guys.

Where was Neal Burcham rated 5 stars? He made the elite 11 finals, so ESPN had to bump him to a 4, but everywhere else he was a 3 or 2 star. But yeah, they seemed pretty committed to him once Gilbert went down.

I agree. I like our defense much better going against a pocket passer than a dual threat.

  10. Oh, so he committed to ATM with the thought process of stealing the heisman trophy winners job? Then transfers? Is he eligible this year?

When he committed to A&M Johnny Manziel was an early enrollee, in his first semester at A&M after graduating high school a semester early and Sherman was still their coach. By the time he got to campus Johnny was the co #1 with current UTEP starting qb Jameil Showers. So no, his thought process in his commitment had nothing to do with associating Johnny Manziel and the Heisman trophy.

He should be eligible, since he sat out last year. He was apparently going to go the JUCO route but I don't know where he ended up

  11. Everything I have heard was there was only one left after signing day but I have learned that can sometimes be a fluid number.

My take is that this kid was all signed sealed and delivered to Illinois and something happened and he was not able to graduate in time to be eligible for Spring Training. So, that opened things back up for him. This conversation on the Illinois board seems to back that up: http://www.illinoisloyalty.com/Forums/showthread.php?p=855292

Yup, and that's all Vito has been reporting as well. The numbers thing can be fluid, but I really don't quite understand what's so hard to figure out. We have 25 scholarships per class. 23 signees were announced on signing day, including the former walkons, and we just added 1 to that number. Still 1 short of 25.

And it's not like our team is full on scholarships. That's where I could see the fluidity coming from. Saying, "oh we're full right now, but if a guy or two transfer then that would open up some spots." That's not the case, as far as I know, and we are not at our limit of 85 total or 25 for this class. Who knows? Not me, I guess.

  12. That Pierce College must have been really good last season as they had quite a number of D-I signees. Dash is not listed on here as this was from awhile back.

    Brahmas Football News

Congrats to all the Pierce Football players that committed today. Here is our updated list of players with full ride scholarships:

    Division 1

    DE Jon Johnson - Cal

WR Tyrin Stone-Davis - University of Illinois

OL - Proof Chaimberlain - University of West Virginia

LB - Kohl Adams-Hurd - Old Dominion University

QB - Nick Arbuckle - Georgia State University

LB - Reece Schmidt - Old Dominion University

DT - Hakeem Allonce - University of Cincinnati Bearcats

TE - Tyler Kolodny - University of Memphis

OL - Brandon Mitchell - Marshall University

LB - Nico Henry - Southern University

FS - Bobby Baker Jr. - University of Alabama-Birmingham

CB - Max Lyons - Portland State

DT - Terrance Neahauser - Missouri State University

    Division 2

LB - John R. PRuden - Southern Missouri

SS - Byron William Rozier - Chowan University

LB - Lonnie Park - Henderson University

We still have another 8-10 players that will get D1 offers and another 5-7 that will get D2. This is what JUCO football is about. Helping your players get a FREE education!!!

They're a solid program. I have a lot of family in the SF Valley, and had a couple cousins play for Pierce a few years ago. There's some really good junior college football played in this country, in places like Kansas, Mississippi, and Texas. But I'm of the opinion that California has the best JUCO system for football. Not just stacked teams here and there, but stacked conferences.
  13. 5'10" 183 lb defensive back from Arlington Bowie. Teammate of OT Madison Akamnonu, who we offered earlier in the process. Also holds offers from Southern Miss, La Tech, Northern Illinois, Bowling Green, Texas State, Tulsa, and now us. Plays safety for Bowie, and was 1st team all district 3-5A last year as a junior, but is also getting looks at cornerback for college.

  14. This conversation will continue to go in circles until Benford starts winning at a level well above .4375 - or we fire him. The way I see the next two years going is, we are roughly .500 next season, and then the bottom drops out year four spurring the AD to let him go. So, two years of this.

Again, I don't believe the JJ and Benford situations are at all comparable before their respective 3rd years.

Great post. I agree, I think this year won't be that bad. Benford still has the last two, and most important JJ players outside of Tony Mitchell, that Benford inherited.

Benford has had the luxury of inheriting a team of young stars. His first year was pretty much all JJ players and last year, despite only having 4 JJ signings on the team, they made up our top 3 scorers and scored over half of our team's points last year. What's going to happen when Benford doesn't just have to recruit role players anymore?
