His head football coach thinks that Sam Houston State and Liberty aren't D1. That's honestly pretty bad that a head football coach at a 4A (now 5A) high school, who is trying to send kids to play in college, doesn't know the difference between FBS, FCS, and the fact that they're both D1. And then not knowing that the Big East doesn't exist in football anymore.
Also, I've really liked Mann this whole process but are chances at getting him are becoming increasingly unrealistic.

Sorry. Reread my post. I accidentally said short side of the field twice. I said Jones plays the short side of the field (which he does, like you said), but I accidentally said Whitfield and Buyers play the short side too. I meant the wide side, or field corner.UNT has a field corner and boundary corner. The field cb (buyers) is the wide side of the field. Whitfield once play the field corner, but has been moved to boundary. Boundary corners usually stick to the flats
Has Whitfield been officially moved to the short side? I thought he was just playing that in the spring temporarily while Jones was injured. Although he seems to be our first corner off the bench, regardless of side.

Interesting. Yeah, personally I think Warner starts if he's healthy. But Wade has been another great walkon transfer. On the DL I was just trying to project the rotation rather than the technique. Your right though TJ will be more of the space eater behind Orr. I did the same thing with corners list the 4 best. Whitfield will be the 1st corner off the bench and the nickel which he played so well last yr. At safety I went with Wade just bc I thought he looked a lil better. I imagine though they will split time. Warner is such a good athlete great initial step.
At the WR I think Harris will line up outside most of the time. I do think they move him around like BC. In Gun sets I bet you see Terrell line up in the slot bc he is almost like another TE out there. Plus he is great across the middle big target.
The OL is interesting bc we all know how good Lemon is at G so why mess with that? I think it's bc they just want to get their 5 best guys on the field. I'm interested like you to see where Denuccui ends up and if Rentfro can push for starting time.
As for Harris, I think the days of us having undersized outside receivers or former walkons may be over. With Terrell, Kidsy, Goree, and some guys down the line like Rutherford and current commit Rodney Bendy, I think we'll be able to keep Harris inside. Not a bad thing and he is good enough to play outside, but he does great damage inside. I'm sure we will move him around.
The reason you mentioned is why Terrell played slot last year and was listed behind Harris in the slot. But I think he does better outside, although he could be used there as well. Marcus Smith filling that role more frequently will have something to do with that as well. And that's exactly why they had Lemon at tackle in the spring, but Denucci may change things. Or he may not. We'll see.

Great job as always, Greg. I have some questions about the depth chart.
Very interesting that you had Wade ahead of Warner at FS. I'm sure health played a lot into that decision for you. You had Whitfield behind Jones, which he's probably our first corner off the bench regardless of side, but Whitfield has been short side of the field corner where Buyers is, while Chad Davis is on the short side behind Jones. On the d-line you had Moore behind Orr at nose, and Tauaalo behind Lincoln at 3-tech. Moore was listed behind Lincoln at the 3-tech coming out of spring and he's more of a penetrator than a block-eater at 252 lbs, so I'd think Tauaalo is more fitting at nose behind Orr.
On offense you had Harris outside and Kidsy in the slot. Is that more opinion of where you think they should be or has there been a position change? Because it was the other way coming out of spring. Also, I'm interested to see if this late JUCO signee Darren Dennuci starts at right tackle and they move Lemon back inside. McKinney looks solid, so we're good either way, but you usually don't sign a 23 year-old JUCO kid to develop. So I'm sure he'll be given a shot. If Greer starts at qb and can keep his interceptions down to 7 like you project, that would be great news for us going forward.
Anyways, I don't get to talk in-depth about our roster like this very often, even on here. So it's cool to see other views and outlooks on our roster.

Commits to Kansas State. Really liked his film, but I'm glad we got at least one DE away from K-State in Sam Miller.
As for our defensive end situation this class, I think we'll take one more. We have Miller committed and Jon Graham set to grayshirt and be a part of this class. Could potentially be a case of the next guy to commit gets spot. Making a decision this summer could be in their best interest.

Y'Barbo and Lemon were 1st-team, no surprise. No one else made it, unfortunately. But we were tabbed by the coaches to win the west.

6'1" 190 lb athlete from Wylie East. Plays all over the offense, mainly at running back and receiver. Has offers from schools like Arkansas, TCU, OU, and us. I believe this is around our 6th offer for 2016.
Highlights:

most athletic on the field everytime
Most of his highlights have no help over the top and running a 4.4 doesn't make one "athletic". Just to clarify not saying the guy isn't the most athletic but simply listing someone's height and weight with a spare 40 time and suggesting that makes him the most athletic is silly.
Just for the record, Justin Dunning, who BigDanTeague mentioned, had a season-ending injury and did not play last season. So he wasn't in Brooks' junior highlights.

Sorry to bump this thread, but found it very interesting that this Dillman kid (a Nebraska commit) is the backup quarterback to a rising sophomore who transferred into Guyer from Saginaw Chisolm Trail. The third-string just transferred out as well, after transferring in. But Guyer had 4 legitimate varsity qbs, possibly all D1 prospects, playing qb for their team. Never seen anything like this. Thanks 03! Glad to see we offered him. Hopefully we offer their transfer qb Kevin Dillman. Kid transferred from California, but we all know the real reason he came to Denton! Lock him up Mac!

Sorry, I'm still not being very clear. I meant it as "Harry was there last year, so he'd be a good guy to talk to and ask about it." As far as attending. But Harry is a legend...
I mean member of the media.

Yeah, sorry I wasn't very clear. The camps that are open to any high school athlete are also open to the public, I believe. The invite-only camps are, I believe, closed to the public. Harry was at last year's Friday Night Lights camp.Meant for some bum like me to go watch. Lol

Add Outland watch list and Lombardi watch list for Cyril. Also Lombardi watch list for Mason Y'Barbo. I know it can be hard to get excited about linemen, but this is very impressive.

The Friday Night Lights Camp on that Friday is open and it was a $40 registration fee for players last year. I'm fairly certain that there was another camp date, either the Thursday (day before) or Saturday (day after) which was private and invite only. Imagine we'll see something similar this year.Billy, is this an open to public type camp?

WR D'erren Wilson will be in attendance per Vito's recruiting series article on Wilson.

So far we've extended very fews offers in July. The evaluating period isn't over (Tee Goree and O'Keeron Rutherford were among a few of our signees who were not offered yet at this point last year), but the coaches have identified their targets and likely are zoning in on a select number of guys.
Wanted to start a thread on the Friday night lights camp (and any other camps that week of Friday July 25th) in order to see who is going to be there.
That time last year we saw Fonzale Davis and Connor Means commit during the camp and Brandon Garner, Jalen Montgomery, Kishawn McClain, and Chris Miles commit shortly after in the next week or two. Hopefully we see the camp give our class a big boost like last year.
Friday Night Light expected attendees:
- WR D'erren Wilson
- DE/DT Dustin Mcwhorter
- OL Joseph Gonzales
- ATH Davion Freeman
- OL Abdul Beecham (committed 7/25/14)
- JUCO WR Jarvis Baxter
- LB Anthony Hines (2017)
- OL Creighton Barr
- OL Evan Curl
- WR Jerminic Smith
- DB Ashton Preston (commit)
- DE Myles Cheatum

Rivals also bumped Tee Goree from a 2-star to a 3-star after he committed to us. You can't look at things from only one angle and ignore when things to the contrary happen. Just like we can't only look at the successful 2-stars and unsuccessful 3-stars when we examine how effective star-ratings are.Not when Rivals flat out dropped a 3 star to a 2 star because they committed to us. I wrote them for explanation and they pretty much admitted to this. That discredits their system in my eyes. A kid's ability does not change based on who he signs with in college.
-
Disagree again. It is a factor, but you can see the player's capabilities even if they're doing it on a lower level. It makes things less impressive, but when you look at a kid's film you are zoning in on that one individual player and what his skill set is. Is he a one-step cut or two-step cut guy? Does he tackle high? How is his throwing motion? Is he nasty? To be able to evaluate fairly, you need to know the ability of each and every player that the recruit goes up against in the highlight video. If there is one person on here that would know that, it would be you, but it definitely isn't me or the many others that casually comment on highlight videos.
Does the player take plays off? Does he have a constant motor? Can't tell from a highlight video.
A full game video would give you a much better feel for the ability of the recruit.
I think offer list is the most viable source to rate recruits, because you can bet your anus that those schools have done this work to evaluate that recruit.
A lot of major questions can be answered regardless of competition. I'll be honest, some kid's we have offered I have not been able to watch past the first minute or so in their highlight film. It doesn't matter who they are going against, they themselves aren't looking like division 1 players. I don't know who they're going against, I just know that they are looking very underwhelming.
I definitely agree on the sample size. I love watching full game films if I can get my hands on them. That is a major flaw in highlight videos, but I'm only realistically looking for a player's skill set in their highlight video. Not their consistency.
Another thing I like to do is watch other player's highlight videos that feature another player in question. For example, watching Evan Curl's highlights and seeing what kind of player Chris Miles is on those plays where they are Curl's highlights and maybe just a random play for Miles. Or watching Kenneth Mann during Joseph Gonzales' highlights. That's when I knew for sure that Mann was the real deal, before he picked up another 19 offers or so.
But yes, recruiting battles are ultimately the measure that matters as far as coaches ability to recruit. Being able to get the guys you want, even if other schools want them, is how you get your program to it's full potential.
