..the other day, I came across a familiar sight. A huge display of local sports gear.......HS SPORTS GEAR THAT IS. I could buy either a Boswell Pioneer baseball cap and stadium blanket OR I could get the same gear for the new High School... the Saginaw High School Rough Riders. Saginaw High School currently doesn't play a varsity sports schedule because this is their first year. But you can get their gear!

You mean like those two drive-extending penalties in the Tulsa game?

Should the NCAA but spending caps on teams
SilverEagle replied to PHSCoach's topic in Mean Green Football
Well scholorship limits were imposed a long time ago. In theory, that's basically the same thing (if we are arguing this on business principles) as imposing a spending limit. Do the people who say "if you've got it, then spend it" think that we should go back to the old days of BCS-type schools giving unlimited scholorships? Personally, I think it's absurd to pay any coach in America a salary that exceeds 150K. -

DMN blurbs, NT to increase practicing in pads
SilverEagle replied to OldTimer's topic in Mean Green Football
Hmmm, this team (with the exception of a player or two) has basically been practicing together since spring. So, all spring (which includes at least one 100+ play scrimmage) and all of the fall, they've been together and they still haven't gotten down their "assignments and techniques"? It isn't as if they've suddenly been required to learn the Texas Tech offense or Urban Meyer's offense. This is the same plain vanilla offense that's been around since DD arrived in 98. -

A better punishment would be for Plumm to go to the hospitality deck and not be allowed to talk for 30min..... -
.......... Yeah, we seem to have the market cornered this year on "ugly".
-
Don't forget that they were together during spring as well. Which included at least one scrimmage of 100+ plays.

I don't know. Who is it that doesn't seem to "get it"?

.....or sit on the bench.

Anymore, how many people coming out of the Marketing dept at North Texas, or even the Athletic dept (as interns) really know that much about North Texas history....sports or otherwise. -
I'm confused. We ONLY put up 13 points after 8 turnovers against a team that has yet to win a D-1 game and has only been around for four years and you call the win a MARVEL? That would seem to imply that (talent wise) we are a pretty crappy team. You then comment that we have a talented group of players that have yet to gel. When you're five games into the season, and you've yet to gel (with the aforementioned talented group of players), then (IMHO) that has to do with coaching. So which is it? Are we (talent wise) a crappy team because we can't beat a FIU by anymore than 3 points with 8 TURNOVERS......or is it coaching. IMHO the fans are starting to do their part. So far this year we are averaging bigger crowds for much lower profile games (Tulsa and Troy). But the winning pattern that was basically established by this coaching staff is still pretty much the same. As I said in another thread, I'm very glad that our ULM game was moved to Nov. 19th. Because right now, we wouldn't stand a chance against them.

OK, I got curious and looked it up. The first five coaches at North Texas (J.W. Pender, J.W. St. Clair, Theron Fouts, John Reid, Jack Sisco and Lloyd Russell were Baylor graduates. After Odus Mitchell, Rod Rust was an Iowa St. grad, Hayden Fry (Baylor), Jerry Moore (Baylor), Bob Tyler (Ol'Miss), Corky Nelson (SWTSU), Dennis Parker (SE Oklahoma St.), Matt Simon (E. New Mexico) and finally DD from Kansas St. So, out of 15 coaches at North Texas, seven have been Baylor graduates. -

The first sell-out was against SFA in 88. The person in charge of promotions was a North Texas grad. BTW, Corky was a graduate of Texas State San Marcos.... AKA SWTSU. Hayden Fry was a Baylor graduate......as were a couple of other coaches BEFORE Odus Mitchell......who was a West Texas State (now West Texas A&M) graduate. -
Messy or not FIU win was huge for UNT
SilverEagle replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
...becauuuuussseeee we did both of those things against a team that has yet to win a D-1 game AND we still only scored 13 points in the process! I seriously doubt that we'll duplicate the sack/turnover numbers that we had in the FIU game in the remainder of our games.......especially LSU. I will say this. I'm certainly glad that the ULM game was moved to Nov.19th, because whatever "stride" we develop this year....we'll be hitting it about then. -
Please keep in mind that I am not yelling to "fire DD". What I'm am saying is that IF and/or WHEN this issue becomes critical, RV has not (again IMHO) been empowered to make this tough decision. That's an untenable situation for any manager to be in. If what I'm am speculating about is true, then for this University and/or BOR to allow this to continue is shameful. And again, assuming that my speculation is true (which I hope it's not). Then let's say that RV finds another job and moves on. What "competent" candidate would even think about applying for his job? Of course that's assuming that this University even wants a "competent" AD.

SilverEagle replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
Don't forget that we had more sacks in that game than we've had in years. SO! in order to win the rest of our games our opponents must commit a record number of turnovers AND we must have a record number of sacks. No problem there. -
Cerebus, I tend to agree with you on this except for one thing. IMHO, someone is not letting RV do the "personnel" portion of his job re: hiring and firing coaches. So, it wouldn't matter if the money was raised to buy Dickey out of his contract. Whoever is not allowing RV to do the "personnel" part of his job, would just make RV give Dickey another raise. I hope I'm wrong about this.

Just curious. How many North Texas alumni are on staff with RV? How many are in REAL decision making positions. I seem to recall that on two historical occasions, North Texas almuni were very much involved in decision making and/or ideas. #1. The creation of the flying worm (I prefer stylized Eagle). Love it or hate it, the "stylized Eagle" was the most distictive image/logo in the history of this school. North Texas immediately became recognizable as a result of this image. And they were recognized for their WINNING! I still want that image back! #2. The first ever sell-out at Fouts field. North Texas was a 1-AA program, but they sold out Fouts for the first time in school history. Odus Mithcell never did that, Rod Rust never did that, and Hayden Fry never did that. The person in charge of promotions during that era was a North Texas graduate. -
It was a great day in college football Saturday. Both SMU AND the Irish lost.

How Much Do You Think NT Is Going To Have To
SilverEagle replied to PlummMeanGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
For that we should get a 65 to 75K domed stadium. -
pro level? Desperados? whatever you say. I would settle for another player at the level of Sky Pruitt.....or even someone like....Rahagene Cherry (6'2" X 310)

Sounds of the stadium marching band concert
SilverEagle replied to FirefightnRick's topic in Mean Green Football
Yep, that's exactly how it happened. The only other "logistical" matter was choosing the "mass band" tune to be played and making sure that all of the invited HS bands had the tune either in their music library's or send them copies of it. It would be even easier today now that everyone has e-mail. Hell, for that matter most of the local HS bands have their own web-sites. -
....that and the coaching staff's inability to adequately plan for that eventual occasion.
