  1. Hmmm, Orthopedic surgeon or Coach. Looks like he was going to work on athletes/football players one way or another. I have chatted with his grandfather, who was a coach, and his uncle who is a Lawyer. I believe his father is a pediatrician. The FAU game was certainly a great game for him, but the Iowa game was a close second. Fine went into the locker room right before half with some sort of injury, and Q took the team in for a TD right before halftime.....with a pass not a run. Q was always taking care of business. I remember being at a practice when Canales was still coaching at NT. Coach "C" was jogging around, stopping here or there, to politic with one person or another. And there was Q showing the big (and very inept) QB candidate from Longview Pine Tree how to stand in the pocket. Good luck Q. Don't stay too long out there. The successful coaches keep moving.........up.
  2. Well, if they already know how to win, then that means we could also save some money on coaches' salaries........😎 Winners expect to win. They are unphased by adversity/mistakes. They don't go sit on the bench and pout and brood when something doesn't go their (or the team's) way. They are usually very focused and don't waste their time mugging for the camera.
  3. Now this signing process might not be completely over, but if I am not mistaken, we have NOT signed any RB's. And this is after losing a perfectly good RB to the portal (Preston Landis). IHMO this speaks volumes about our RB situation, and the coach that recruited and developed all of them.
  4. This is the second administrator that has been hired from a lower classification school. Jared Mosley's experience was at Abilene Christian, where he was VERY successful at fund raising. Dr. Smith seems to have been successful at fund raising at a much smaller school. In both cases I'm assuming they had to work harder (and I assume smarter) and with fewer resources to become successful. My experience has been that those type people don't make up excuses for not being successful and reaching their goals. I could be wrong, but I am anticipating a significant culture change regarding how the athletic department is going to be run.
  5. Well, I'm not sure about the music, but I have already suggested that the "NORTH TEXAS" crowd chant is perfect for the anticipated entry of the Team. OR, alternate "NORTH TEXAS" with "MEAN GREEN" for the crowd as the noise is building up in anticipation of the entry of the team. Since greenminer is fond of classic rock. Maybe this..... but louder and more up-tempo. Or a more up-tempo version of this.....
  6. Yep. All the old nesters who strongly resisted change (which Fry represented) did away with anything having to do with Fry.
  7. We had an embarrassment of riches at the beginning of the season, but we were basically down to 2.5 RB's by the bowl game. Ragsdale, Johnson, and a not-100% #39. Landis could have been part of the rotation.....if he was healthy. They did give him a lot of carries during spring practice.
  8. Is this the former NT QB Rick Shaw?
  9. It's a good thing for the Cowboys that the phrase isn't "perfect kicking wins Championships"
  10. Thanks Dr. Shanbour for checking in and letting us know where Q is taking on his newest challenge. I'm sure he did blow them away during his interview at UC Davis. From what I've heard, he does that to everyone. I didn't realize how highly he was regarded by coaches and teammates until I was sitting in the stands one spring chatting with Cade Pearson's dad, who was himself a coach. We talked about the QB's on the team and how we rated them, and when I mention Q, I couldn't believe his strong reaction. It turns out that Cade and Q were roommates and Q, even though a competitor for the same position, had been teaching and coaching Cade as a peer. Coach Pearson made it clear that he thought Q, was one of the finest young men he had ever met and probably the smartest. I've told this story many times, but the first time I saw your son was at a practice, when McCarney was still coach. He was one of several QB's going through a fairly monotonous, drill. The QB took a snap, faked a hand-off to a Running back, and then threw to a WR who was running a route. So it was "snap-fake-throw, snap-fake-throw, THEN when Q stepped up it was "snap-fake-phfittt:" I couldn't believe my eyes, so I watched the conga line of QB's go around again and take their turns. Same thing "snap-fake-throw etc, etc" until, your son once again took his turn. And one again it was "snap-fake-phfitt". You could barely see his release. The last time I had seen a release like that was the spring scrimmage in 67 when I watched Steve Ramsey make his first appearance. He effortlessly launched a 50 bomb to someone wearing #31..... the late-great Ron Shanklin. His arm motion was so quick, you could barely see it. On another spring practice day a group of High School coaches were milling around the practice field. I was watching some drills when one of the coaches (the Head Coach of Fossil Ridge HS) came up and chatted with me for a few minutes. He then wandered off to watch some scrimmaging that was going on. He returned about 30 minutes later and sauntered up to me and said "tell me about #19". I'm asking you because you're the only one around here that seems to know anything. I told him what I knew about his background and how he ended up at NT. I then said "so what do you think?" He said "that guy can play QB". I said, "well, you might want to pass your observations on to the Head Coach". You son went from totally anonymous walk-on under McCarney to back-up QB for Mason Fine under Littrell/Harrell. And it took his rise to second string QB before "someone" even acknowledged, in print, his existence on the team........shameful. Anyway, I am looking forward to hearing/reading about your son's Dennis Francione-Eric Morris-like rise through the coaching ranks.
  11. Typically players who walk on are not noticed until they work their way into actual playing time and are on the verge of getting a "ship". This situation seems to be the opposite.... publicity wise.
  12. Our coaches better do more than hope. They better get busy with the "development" side of their coaching skills.
  13. Hmm. I tend to agree with dmaxel about something being off. Maybe it's just me, but in his Marcus HS highlight video, it looks like he's kind' of going through the motions rather than going at it full-speed-hell-bent-for-leather. A step or so faster and a little quicker, and I would feel much better about this player. On the upside, he looks bigger than 235 to me.
  14. Combine that with a moderately better performance from our defense, and I totally agree with your assessment.
  15. Coach Dykes had a pretty good "rebuilding year", over at TCU.
  16. Ok, Mr. Rogers looks very promising. But how is the support system for any QB we have out there? Would any North Texas QB get an adequate amount of time to make the best passing decision? How good will our WR's be? It's not uncommon for me to watch a QB highlight video and my first comment is "who the hell were those WR's" Remember the talented group that made Mason Fine look so good?
  17. Morris family member, or friends of the Morris family?
  18. I vote for letsgiveacheer to be head of the selection committee for the next director. No. The GB was up to about 400 before he was hired. During his brief tenure it grew to about 415...maybe more. I think letting the band get to such an obese size, was someone's idea about increasing ticket sales. Most of the band is volunteers from the student body. Probably most are local. This brings in family, friends from your hometown, and new friends you made in the student body. So instead of a 250-300 member band (mostly music majors or music education majors) sitting in the stands with maybe the same amount of family and friends buying tickets, you have 400+ member band (maybe half as many music majors or music ed majors) filling up seats that would otherwise be going empty and family and friends numbering somewhere between 800-900 buying tickets to see their child, grandchild, brother-sister, friend perform with a Prestigeous Band. Dr. Cook did an excellent job of managing such an unwieldy band. The band members seemed to really like him.....as did I. They did some very excellent programs, but I think he would have produced even more impressive shows if the Band had been of a more manageable size.....with more members from the school of music. AND if nothing else remains from his tenure here, he has left us with one very important part of a pre-game show......a North Texas based fanfare...... starting at 2:09 on this video. To my knowledge NO OTHER DIRECTOR HAS PRODUCED ONE, OR HAD ONE WRITTEN AND PRODUCED. And I never understood why. Also, Dr. Cook, in one conversation that I had with him, confirmed something that I have always suspected. Just about all the groups that participate in game time have their own directors/sponsors and come there and do their own thing. With little, if any, coordination with one another. I made a suggestion for a tune that might work well for the dance team. He said "well, I don't select the music for them, their sponsor does. I'll pass this suggestion on to them". Essentially the same thing goes on with the cheer squad. The Band plays the musical prompts that have been played for years because the cheerleaders like them, not because they are ideal spirit prompts. Dr. Cook commented that he really didn't like one of them, but they went ahead and played it because the cheerleaders like it. I just smiled and said "well, I don't like it either, but it appears to me that the cheerleaders like it because the band does most of the work and the cheerleaders just provide a little exclamation point to it." A job well done Fessor! Congratulations on your promotion.
  19. Two things. 1. "They don't have time or care" should be the sub-title of our university's official name..."University of North Texas" (we don't have time or care about traditions) 2. "Considering how old that cheer is"...maybe we could stir up some interest now that "The Gilded Age" series has become so popular. Maybe we could get them to have an episode where they attend a football game, and the crowd uses our chant/yell.
  20. It was my attempt at being sarcastic/cynical about my/our alma mater. "We're too cool for stuff like that" was always the attitude/vibe of the students at North Texas when I attended (early 70's). They'd roll their eyes and/or smirk at other schools and their corny traditions. Meanwhile the good ol' cool North Texas football-basketball teams were getting their collective asses kicked by those cornballs. And just in case my point is not clear enough. The Texas school with one of the biggest cornball traditions is on the verge of being national champions.
  21. I wonder how many students would know the historical significance of that. Or how many alums for that matter.
  22. When the Band forms a tunnel for the team to run through, either start playing "fly like an Eagle" or a loud drum cadence as the crowd starts the "NORTH-TEXAS" chant, so as to be beckoning the team to enter the field. The moment the team enters the Band tunnel, switch to the fight song, and set off the fireworks, and let the crowd go nuts.
  23. Riff, Ram, Bah Zoo: The story behind TCU's unusual chant Story by Caroline Vandergriff • Yesterday 6:52 PM 5Comments FORT WORTH, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) – When TCU takes on Georgia in the National Championship game, viewers across the country will be introduced to one of the most unique cheers in college football. 'Riff Ram Bah Zoo' may sound more like a Dr. Seuss poem than a rallying cry, but it is a beloved tradition for the Frogs. Riff, Ram, Bah Zoo Lickety, Lickety, Zoo, Zoo Who, Wah, Wah, Who Give 'em Hell, TCU. Riff, Ram, Bah Zoo: The story behind TCU's unusual chant (msn.com) BUT(way) down the corridor of years North also has a stupid yell. The young lady (dressed like my grandmother in her youth) is waving a pennant from the North Texas State Normal era. 1901-1923. Considering how she is dressed; she would be from the pre-1920's. That would then make our stupid yell/chant older than TCU's stupid yell/chant.
