Will the excuse next year be that he's only had "his players" for less than a year?  They need time in "his system" to jell, then we will really start to see improvement.

No, because due to the current state of college football he won't have many of "his players" after next year*

*Well, I mean he'll have a brand-new batch of "his players" but not the same "his players" that he will have next year and definitely different from "his players" that he will have in two years.

Did you know in 2009 we were 24 points away from being 8-4 instead of 2-10? We were only 17 points from being 7-5. We were 13 points from bowl eligibility.

Todd Dodge was fired in the middle of 2010 with a 1-6 record. Two of those losses were by a single point. A 3rd loss was by 5 points while being forced to play a walkon wide receiver at quarterback due to injuries. He was a mere 7 points from a winning record and being 4-3 at the time of his firing despite his team being eviscerated by injuries.

Close games and moral victories mean nothing. I am not impressed with this staff thus far and they have shown me nothing that says they can take this team higher than the guy we fired.

I've seen you make this same argument several times now.

I'm curious, when you've broken up with a girlfriend did you break up because it was time to move on from the relationship or did you say "I don't feel like this is working, but I'll reserve judgement on how badly things are broken until I'm into my next relationship"?

At this point I would agree.  We demand to be taken seriously and be given some explanation for what has transpired.  This type of stuff did not happen under Littrell, McCarney or any of the coaches prior to this group.

You mean kids moving on in droves didn’t happen before the NCAA created a system where they are nothing more than commodities to be bought and sold to the highest bidder?

And I’m sure this is a problem that is unique to North Texas.  It’s not like Ohio State and Oklahoma lost their STARTING quarterbacks to the portal…or Florida lost their top returning running back…and so on.

”A total of 538 FBS scholarship players put their name in the NCAA transfer portal on Monday. That’s an 18 percent increase from last year’s opening day of portal activity. But that group of players — 305 from Power 5 programs, 233 from the Group of 5 — doesn’t come close to measuring the magnitude on Monday.

Because there were also nearly 100 walk-ons who entered the portal. And there were a whopping 416 players from FCS schools who also opted to transfer. Last year, the FCS transfer window opened two weeks earlier than the FBS window. This gave college football coaches more time to evaluate those lower-level players before the more coveted transfers hit the market. This year? The portal opened on the same day for both subdivisions.”

Seth was a very good coach.  He never had this type of losses from his players.  Eric could learn a lot from how Seth handled things if you ask me.

Absolutely. Dealing with a college football landscape that is completely different than what it currently is, and with resources and assistant pay completely different than his predecessors, Seth really took us to new heights.

Any of the guys in this thread want to revisit their takes?

Barry Odom did indeed find a good OC, as yours-truly indicated he would need to (a fantastic young offensive mind: Brennan Marion), and took a 5-7 UNLV team to 9-4 (including a MWC Championship appearance)... in just one year!

That's crazy how he could do something like that!  I mean, if you listen to folks around here, regressing from 6-6 to 5-7 is reasonable, and "nothing to be ashamed of"!!!1!!1!!!

Meanwhile, Coach Odom is actually WINNING.

Missed opportunity.  Bring on the downvotes!

Sure it is. The best 4 teams should be in the playoffs. I believe they are. That said, I’m really glad they’re expanding the playoffs next year.

    No, they’re not.

I’d lay $100 on Georgia to beat any of the teams not named Alabama or Michigan if they played today.

  7. If we want to talk about the ENTIRE season, let’s consider:

    - Florida State won every game put in front of them.  All of them.

    - Texas beat the 19th WORST defense in the country yesterday, FSU beat the #12 team.

    - Texas has a win vs Alabama…and a loss to a two loss Oklahoma.   Their marquee win is awesome…their loss is worse than any other team in consideration for a spot in the playoff.

    - If we are going to leave FSU out because “they aren’t the team they were before” and acknowledge that teams can be different at different points in the season…then why do we assume that the Bama team we see today is the same Bama team that Texas beat??

  8. One thing that I’d like to see an end to is the mini scoring droughts this team can get into.

It seems that every game there is about a 3-5 minute period (of game time) where the offense bogs down and we stall out…against Angelo State that’s not a problem, against Wichita State, FAU or Memphis it can get you buried.
