The arguement isn't if the teams can consistently compete right now. If the little guy isn't allowed in, then why play? A chance at a meaningless bowl win? If a coach can pitch winning a conference and having a chance to play for the national title, parity is likely to come sooner. If the little guy has to wait for 1 of 2 at large spots, then they are not likely to get in. There are currently 4 at large bids to the Bc$ and in order for a mid-major to get a bid, they have to be undefeated. How can we, as a little guy, expect a shot at 1 of 2 spaces with those kinds of odds in a biased system. A playoff that includes a chance for everyone is the most fair way to determine the national champion. Besides, it works ok in basketball, and no one is complaining about that.
