  1. Oh, and I forgot to comment on the subject title of this thread....class warfare?? Nah, I don't really think so. I've had the (mis)fortune of working with several SMU alumni in my career. Surprisingly to me, most of them aren't too bright and certainly lacking in the intellegence department, but that's another topic. While a certain number of SMU students may have been born with the proverbial silver spoons in their mouths, I don't see a big difference between them and former students of any other major university in Texas. Obviously, those that I have worked with weren't given the keys to "daddy's business". While their parents may have healthy bank accounts (as do alumni from other universities) and provide some financial support, they have to work just as hard as everyone else (Horns, Aggies, Sooners and Eagles) to get where they want to be in life. I definitely disagree with the assessment that UNT produces "blue collar" workers. I don't think anyone needs to go to an institution of higher learning to gain employment in the blue collar industries. This argument seems more appropriate for a high school game versus Highland Park and (insert DISD public high school). And I would certainly hate to advertise UNT as a "blue collar university" because I seriously doubt that would help our enrollment and recruiting efforts. Now if you want to be known as a school that welcomes blue collar fans...I'd be agreeable to that.
  2. WTF?!??! There you go again spewing off that homo-neurotic crap. I remember my parents taking me to SMU-UNT games at Texas Stadium when I was a kid. Even though my mother was a UNT alumn, I was pulling for the wrong side. I was yound and impressionable and all the free Mustang Mania stuff lured me to the dark side. (See they were even paying for fans in those days.) Anyway, I realized the error of my ways soon enough and ceased my support for the unsubstantiated arrogance that is SMU. I wasn't really expecting this game to mean so much to me, but the attitude SMU is exhibiting so far is really pissing me off. They act like we're nothing more than a gnat to them and that we couldn't even hold their jock straps. I don't know if it's pure football stupidity or if they really believe they are going to be good this year, but those attitudes seem to seem to be a little over-confident for a program that is 39-85 since 1995; 11-35 in the last four seasons. So, needless to say, I hope we KICK THEIR ASS on September 9!!! Go Mean Green!!! I liken this game to fighting the "little bully"...the kid's smaller than you, so you're supposed to kick his ass. However, since he is smaller, you look like the bad guy for beating up the little guy. If you don't fight him, you look like a coward for not standing up to him and if he should happen to win the fight...well, that's just humiliating.
  3. This sounds a LOT like DD. LongJim, did DD steal your password and post under your member name??
  4. Baylor's announcement of a verbal from G.J. Kinne should come as no surprise to anyone. That commitment was assured when G.J.'s dad, and former standout Baylor linebacker, Gary Joe Kinne, was hired this season as Baylor's Linebackers Coach. I'd be inclined to believe that G.J. would have committed to attend Baylor no matter what offense they chose.
  5. Also, I think it's just a wee bit premature to begin talking about a new coach (let's at least wait until week 3). But...I do want to keep my eye on a few possibilities. Here's a link to CFN's "Top 50 Coaches" ranked in a hypothetical poll of who you might hire should you suddenly become an AD for a university with a D-1 football program. Unfortunately, I think UNT would have a hard time luring any of these guys: http://www.collegefootballnews.com/2006/Co...Education_2.htm
  6. You guys crack me up!! Everyone (maybe not the specific members who have already posted in this thread, but everyone, in general) complains about DD and his shortcomings in OOC games. Everyone talks about how they would love to have a "high-profile" coach at North Texas..one with a proven track record and sustained recruiting success. Francione fits that description but you would be opposed to hiring him because...why??? Just for the record, I know very little about Francione as a person and have no opinion on his coaching ability. But, I feel Francione is a recognized and respected name in the D-1 ranks and I think he would boost the football program in terms of excitement, media coverage and recruiting. It's all a moot point anyway because UNT could never get Francione as a head coach.
  7. From what I understand, the coaching staff was too busy conversing with current recruits. They wanted to make sure that all verbal commitments kept their intentions to attend UNT a secret so that no other university would try to recruit them. Therefore, they had to consult an anonymous source regarding the talent of Preston Brown. The anonymous source was, reportedly, none other than Peppermint Patty. Having played baseball with Preston's brother, Chuck, for a number of years, Peppermint Patty advised the UNT coaching staff that they could find a much better kicker than Preston Brown.
  8. With NFL training camps about to start, I'd like know what everyone thinks about these three RBs; who will have the most successful NFL career and who would you choose as your starting RB for the Mean Green? Here's my take: While in college, Pegram didn't garner the national attention both Patrick and Jamario did, but he experienced moderate success in the NFL. His 7 1/2 NFL seasons (4 with ATL, 2 with PIT and 1 with NYG and 1/2 with SDG) will be hard to overcome. 1993 was easily his best season as he finished in the top 5 of three offensive statistical catergories: 1993 - tied for 4th in number of rushes 1993 - finished 4th in rushing yardage for the season with 1,185 1993 - finished 5th in total yardage for the season with 1,487 Erric also had a good season in Pittsburgh in 1995, when he rushed for 813 yds and five TDs. He topped the thousand yard mark in the total yds category. Every report I've read from "professional" journalists state that Patrick is a long shot to make the Patriots roster. Given the depth they have at the RB position, I'll buy that BUT I think Patrick can be impressive enough in a pre-season game that he could be picked up by another team...likely as a kick returner. A couple of key injuries to RBs and he could find his way on the field. I believe that PC has the talent to be a successful NFL RB, but he'll need a few lucky breaks before any team will give him the chance. Jamario has shown flashes of absolute brilliance, but he's got a problem with the injury bug. I think if J-mo can find some of that magic he had his freshman year and play at that same level his last two years in college, he'll be a first day NFL draft pick. Where he's picked in the draft will have a direct correlation to the contributions he'll be expected to make to the team, thus a higher draft pick will increase his odds of making the team and getting some PT early in his career. While all three of these RBs were/are great, I think J-mo has the most God-given talent and he's my pick to start for the Mean Green AND to have the most successful NFL career. But I really do hope to see PC out there on Sundays this year running for some team, any team, and I'll be cheering for him.
  9. After reading this quote by "BrianTinBigD" on the SMU forum, I'd like to revise my plan for Petunia. I now think we should steal the mule, shave it, paint it GREEN and castrate the little f#@ker. I bet that would keep that little gay oompa loompa horse from trying to mount the Texas Tech horse that's three times his size. Texas? #2?? I bet SMU ranks about 89 on Texas' list of rivals...and that's being generous.
  10. I'll agree that you guys got a raw deal for basically doing the same thing every other successful program was doing. I compare the NCAA enforcement of the DP on SMU to dropping the big one on Japan...once it was done, everyone was in awe of the power and the long-term implications. The end results far exceeded the expectations, and not necessarily in a good way. I'll also agree that TCU is SMU's primary rival, but we had a pretty good series going back in the Mustang Mania/Hayden Fry days. No reason we can't elevate the series to that level again. I think it would benefit both programs tremendously. Of course, we'll play second fiddle to the UT-Ohio State game this year when it comes to media coverage but we need to do all we can to garner more exposure for this game.
  11. This was my favorite piece of the article, a quote by their head coach - "The expectations are way different here now," said J.D. Brookhart, who begins his third season on the sideline this fall. "The university has elevated itself and made the commitment and mediocrity is not going to be accepted any more -- and it shouldn't be." That sounds a LOT different from what we hear coming out of Denton.
  12. I don't want anyone to get in serious trouble with the police or the university but that would be an event to remember...the stuff legends (and rivalries) are made of (everyone knows BEVO's story and that happened 90 years ago). This is the kind of thing that could really create some buzz around this game. Imagine the media attention something like this could generate... Forgive my ignorance of SMU mascot policy, but does anyone know if the live pony actually travels to away games? If not, this may be something we keep in our back pockets until next season when we play at SMU.
  13. For those of you interested in a good scouting report on the Akron Zips: http://insider.espn.go.com/ncf/insider/new...%3fid%3d2512105
  14. So you'd be opposed to kidnapping Puny or Petunia (whatever SMU calls their pony mascot) and branding him with 14-7 (last time we beat SMU in 1990) the day before our game on September 9???
  15. Me too but, unfortunately, every time I buy North Texas merchandise it's always the last one on the shelf. I found a nice looking UNT cap at a Walgreen's in Addison. It was the old logo but I thought it made a good statement being proudly displayed amongst the usual suspects of Texas, A & M and Tech. Then I bought the only one they had and UNT was no longer represented. I did the same thing at an Albertson's in Carrollton. Grabbing some beer for the Memorial Day BBQ, I stumbled across a UNT bottle-sized beer coozie, this time with the new logo. I snatched it up...again leaving UNT unrepresented amongst all the NCAA merchandise.
  16. That's too bad about Graves, I was expecting "big" things from him too. Every now and then a 7-inch, 200+ lb player appears on the NCAA Football video game. Perhaps, Graves can learn a few things from that? I also noticed that we added the new position of "PLAYER" of which #34 Chris Neal hopes to secure the starting job.
  17. Great update...answered all of my questions (and I was a huge Steelers fan in the 70s). Thanks.
  18. You might also be interested to know that NBC plans to make "Friday Night Lights" into a television program to air this fall: http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117929338?cs=1&s=h&p=0
  19. Then again, they could have been inspired by the move "Glory Road" which highlights UTEP's successful run at the 1966 basketball national championship?? I think Price was a good hire for UTEP and I'd love to be in a similar situation, but I'm not buying your theory that Price and one successful football season inspired someone to donate $6 million to UTEP in order to build a basketball practice facility.
  20. Akron plays at the "Rubber Bowl"?? Who's their sponsor Trojan or Durex??
  21. If you clicked on the link to read the story, you'd learn that the kid was ready to commit to Texas State before his dad talked him into going to UTEP. I know nothing about Vittatoe's ability to play at D-1 level because I've never seen him play and I don't want to judge his passing ability on a couple of highlight clips amassed from an entire season (I'm sure I could find two good passes from Meager last season too). But, IF he is D-1 material, I sure hate the fact that Texas State was in his consideration list and North Texas was not.
  22. I agree, Sound_Man they look pretty good...but what exactly are they? Are they decals? I'm interested but I don't have a paypal account. I'd LOVE to buy the 3-D chrome auto emblems Baby Arm! mentioned.
  23. First of all, I thought we opened the 2007 season at Miami? Is Miami 2008, do we play both Miami and OU in 2007 or was Miami cancelled? Or am I completely dreaming that we were scheduled to play in Miami? Secondly, does DD have any sort of incentive clause within his contract to encourage him to actually develop a gameplan against Top 25 opponents? If not, I propose we pay him a bonus for staying within...let's say...30 points of teams ranked in the Top 25 when UNT plays them. Or maybe we should take baby steps and offer bonus incentives for scoring a touchdown against teams that played in a bowl game the previous season? Let's analyze the last few seasons and see how DD would have fared had the above incentives been in place: 2005 K-State - 54-7 = no bonus for 30 pt. margin. We scored a TD but K-State didn't go to a bowl game the previous season nor were they even ranked in the Top 25 LSU - 56-3 = no bonus for 30 pt. margin, no bonus for scoring a TD 2004 Texas 65-0 = no bonus for 30 pt. margin, no bonus for scoring a TD Colorado 52-21 - no bonus for 30 pt. margin. We scored 3 TDs in a game that was pretty exciting for a while but CU didn't go to a bowl game the previous year and wasn't ranked in the Top 25 when we played them. 2003 Oklahoma - 37-3 = no bonus for 30 pt. margin, no bonus for scoring a TD Air Force - 34-21 = no bonus for 30 pt. margin because Air Force was unranked when we played them, however a BONUS would be given for scoring a TD as Air Force lost the 2002 San Francisco Bowl to Virginia Tech, 20-13. Arkansas - 31-7 = BONUS for 30 pt. margin to Top 25 team (Arkansas beat Texas the previous week) and BONUS for scoring a TD against a bowl team (Arkansas lost in the 2002 Liberty Bowl to Minnesota) I'd happily pay for a return to the competitve play of the 2003 season...hopefully with slightly better results.
  24. If you give us +65 1/4 points, we would have gone undefeated and won the national championship. Kinda makes you reconsider the meaning of life doesn't it?
  25. Well, evidently PC has made it to the next stage which is Training Camp. Jakari Wallace, U of Minnesota WR, who was signed the same day as PC wasn't as fortunate as he was released on June 16.
