  1. Are they planning on putting a track around the new field? There is a lot of space between the field and the stands....a lot more than I was expecting.

They would have to place the track around the entire stadium instead of just the plaing field.

  2. It that black border staying around the playing field? If it's is I wonder if it's the same material but just a different color. Or is it a different material made to take more wear and tear? Or perhaps it's something that's only temporary for the installation? Anyone know?

EDIT: One thing I might add is that there is a significantly greater distance from the student side seating to the sideline than from the alumni side seating to the sideline.

    Ah ... that's what I was thinking.

  4. #1. We really haven't improved on that since the Hayden Fry days. Keep in mind that when Hayden Fry was coaching, the student population was about 16.5K to 17K. Our student population is about twice that now.

In 1977 (the year of the letter) the average home attendance was 19,599. In 1978 the average home attendance was 17,683.

During our bowl runs, and recording setting conference winning streak, our average attendance was.....

    2001.. 14,679

    2002...15,260

    2003...18,694

    2004...15,184

#2. We have made significant improvement in that area. Thanks mostly to the efforts of the SGA officers (led by UNTFLYER)who organized "the Vote". THAT was what got us this wonderful stadium...period. Not the Athletic department.

#3. Our ticket office is very friendly to me (but, I'm usually not very demanding), and our Sports info dept has a web-site, but I don't think that the overall service has improved since 1977.

    4. I don't know how many members there were in 1977. But considering

that for several years in recent history our MGC was headed up by the surly, snobbish and just generally dismissive Mandy McKinley..... whatever the current numbers are, they SHOULD be at least twice as much.

You're taking a very narrow view of things. The new stadium doesn't get passed if the athletic department isn't involved. You also leave out the entire Eagle Point complex ... the new women's facilities, new tennis facility, etc. Don't forget that when Rick got here the floor of the Super Pit hadn't been replaced in a very long time.

I wasn't around in '77 but I've heard horror stories about how bad the athletic department was.

  5. I would like to think HKS knows how far from a wall to safefully place a goal post. <_<

I do to but most places I've seen with short distances have padding on the walls. The brick looks so good it would be ashame to cover it with padding and it doesn't appear they are going to do that but I don't know.

  6. There doesn't seem to be much space behind the far goal post and the wall behind it. Has anyone been out there to see how much space there actually is? If they don't put padding on the brick wall it could lead to some sudden, painful stops on long passing plays.

  7. I hate to say it, but I am going to be quite sad when the stadium is completed and the webcam is gone. Anyone know if the university is considering continuing the webcam after construction? You are talking about an addiction that will have a hard time to be replaced...

    This!

  8. There won't be any turf. The gravel, plus yardage marks and goal posts, will be all there is. A national supermarket chain has purchased the naming rights. The Mean Green will play every game in Safeway Stadium.

McCarney likes the old school rocks instead of new fangled turf or grass.

  9. Best: The Navy game. Yeah, we lost but it was an amazing game. Add in the flyover ... the Navy fans ... my wife attending her first NT game ... it had everything except for the win.

Worst: It was a game from the Dennis Parker error (era). It may have been a homecoming game. With just a few seconds left in the game we tie it up. Suppose we were to try an onsides kick. We would only have time for maybe one play try to move 30 yards into field goal range while if the opponent recovered they would almost be in field goal range already. Certainly anyone with a brain could realize that trying an onside kick at this point would be a horrible decision.

Oh ... wait ... Dennis Parker is the head coach. Sure enough, onside kick ... opponent recovers ... one play later they kick the game winning field goal. After the game the players should have hoisted Dennis Parker onto their shoulders, carried him up the bleachers, and thrown him over the top rail.

  10. Im just hoping there is going to be a logo on the 50. Fouts had to have been the only stadium in D1 without a logo. Very sad

There's a lot of ways Fouts was lacking as a D1 stadium. The mid-field logo was only one of them.

  11. Every drawing I've seen of the stadium, shows the SOW logo on the 50. I think that is great, but every drawing also has the logo upside down for fans on the home side. I'm sure when the field is installed, the logo will face the home side, but why have they never corrected this on the drawings or the seating chart?

    Just wondering.

The reason is for television. Typically the television cameras would be on the visitor side of the field so the home team and the stands behind the home team would appear in the shot. Therefore, the mid-field logo would face the visitors.
