Outside the box, love it. Hell, it's the same philosophy a lot of NFL teams employ, think Steelers and they're converted DE's to LB's...
This is the type of thinking that gets us out of our box, out of the limiting thinking UNT fans are often caught in... So we can't go out and find a stud NT, doesn't mean we can't make our own...
Appreciate the nugs of experience YS...
Also think the Cowboys converting college basketball players to NFL players.

One thing Mac did at Iowa State that he most likely will do at UNT is “grow and coach” his defensive linemen. As you know, ready to play studs, both high school and juco, are hard to come buy. They are the hardest guys to recruit.
At I-State, Mac would recruit middle linebacker types that had good size (maybe lacking some speed) and redshirt them. Hitting the weights and training table, he’d get these guys into D-line positions by the time they were redshirt sophomores or juniors. Guys that weren’t fast enough to play MLB at the Big 12 level but were plenty fast to play DL. It was a good system, as he put quite a few guys into the NFL all things considered.
Thanks for the insight. I appreciate these "Mac-nuggets" about how he did things at I-State. Keep 'em coming!

Fast enough to chase down runningbacks and strong enough to lay the wood when he catches them. I'm also impressed that the kid was offered by Air Force. Sounds like a good kid off the field as well.

When the new scoreboard was built - the articles claimed that it would eventually travel across the street to the new stadium. Is this still true? Maybe this is a reason for not building the scoreboard above the Wing Zone? Cost?
Also - this might seem crazy, but when we replaced the turf - I remember the articles stating that it would be moved to the new stadium, too. I really doubt that this will happen because it would essentially leave nothing over at Fouts; but has anyone heard about these two subjects?
Basically, I am wondering what type of video board we will have over there. Same one or new one?
I remember talking about this awhile ago. I thought the scoreboard might be used as a secondary unit. I think the plan was to have a new scoreboard that was one large screen that would provide the most functionality. I also thought it wasn't feasible or possible to put the old turf in the new stadium.

If you missed it there's a new Mean Green Insider video on the MeanGreenSports.com website. Hank interviews Rick and there's a lot of talk about football, the coaching search, and possible conference realignmnet. It'll get you fired up.

What is solich missing that got him whipped today?
What does Blakeby have that put him over the top (aside from the typical shady recruiting scheme)?
Solich was a wonderful coach at Nebraska

That has been the talk for as long as I could remember. Potential is such an overused and overrated word especially when it comes to college athletics. If SMU continues its upward trend their attendance will rise too and the average college football fan will attend.
You can't just dismiss the size of the school. Both stadiums are the same size practically. It is not out of the possibility that SMU can sell out their stadium in a couple of years.
SMU's upward trend? With all they have going for them they still are averaging about the same as us? I don't see a whole lot of potiential growth for SMU unless they can replicate TCU's on field performance.
-
You're overstating our case a little, but your numbers give me reason for optimism. Our floor for attendance is SMU's ceiling. The new coach and new stadium have to be worth a couple thousand extra butts in seats.
You're right about me overstating our case. I like to call it "best case scenario". I think the stadium alone is worth a a couple thousand. The new coach ... some big wins ... and you have another few thousand.
-
Is it?
25K more students, yet a lower attendance average. It's only an advantage if you take advantage. We haven't.
It's an advantage because we have a lot of room to grow.

UNT Enrollment: About 36K
SMU Enrollment: About 11K
Big difference there.
Big difference ... in our favor.

I guess all that's left is RBs and DEs?
There's only one spot left and Mike Nelson appears to have the entire DLine. I'd expect a RB coach to be the final hire with a couple fo GA's to help out.

There been some talk on this board about UNT vs SMU when it came to attendence. I'd thought I'd post the weekly attendence for home games for UNT and for SMU this past season.
UNT
Rice: 23,743
La-La: 17,015
Ark St: 14,589
Fl Int: 14,718
Troy: 14,289
Kan St: 21,952
Total: 106,306
Average: 17,718
SMU
UAB: 16,612
Wash St: 18,184
TCU: 35,481
Tulsa: 19,329
Houston: 20,741
Marshall: 17,513
Total: 127,860
Average: 21,310
So SMU averaged 3,592 more than UNT this past season. However, SMU had one home game with TCU that completely busts the bell curve. If you remove this game their average drops to 18,476 (758 more than us).
In other words, SMU ... with a new stadium ... in a better conference ... playing better "name" home opponents ... with a high profile head coach ... coming off a winning season and bowl victory ... had basically the same number of fans attend their home games as UNT when you remove all the TCU fans who came over from Ft. Worth. I don't need to state all the negatives UNT faced coming into the season and during the season.
Considering all the benefits we have coming into 2011 (new coaching staff, new stadium, better "name" home opponents) I would hope we would see a significant bump in attendance next year and pass SMU. Honestly, I wasn't expecting SMU's attendance to be so low this past season until I looked at the numbers. If we can get things turned around on the field we could race right by SMU very shortly. In a couple of years we could be the team in the area conferences are wanting to have. I'm excited to see just how big this "sleeping giant" really is.

The one thing I didn't like is that he supports the current BCS system. Booo!
I really like his other answers, though. He knows how to get people fired up but also seems to know how to not stick his foot in is mouth.

I'd imagine Canales and Bowen will earn around $200,000 as coordinators; and Quartaro would earn $150,000ish. And I would venture to say that we will be paying assistants significantly more than the rest of the Sun Belt just like we are our head coach.
I hope so. If we're serious about moving up to CUSA or MW then we should start by paying a staff somewhere in the range of those leagues.

Whoa!!!!!, his Tibia? I could see him breaking his Fibia and still being able to play but not his Tibia, which is the weight bearing bone in your lower leg?
Tibia ... fibia ... tomato ... tomato ..

I saw the highlights on Fox Sports SW and they said he broke his tibia, but decided to come back and try to lead his team. I actually think it is broken.
I believe that's the non-weight bearing bone in the lower leg. Same thing Jack Younblood played with in three NFL playoff games in 1979. Hard to believe they would let a high school kid play with that injury. Maybe it's just a very small fracture.

It is the Angel of Mean Green Christmas. She was sent to bring us good news of what was yet to come. Let us not anger her or she will leave and we will end up with Donnie Most rising up from the fog at Fouts.
Excellent! She is now the Angel of Mean Green Christmas. I have updated the original post and my signature.

I agree that it was an excellent documentry. There's two things that stick out in my mind.
One - I agree when Dale Hansen said that when a booster buys a kid it's really the kid who owns the booster.
Two - SMU was caught because they were stupid. Dale Hansen was only able to nailed them because they were stupid.

Merry Christmas 2010 to the GMG Board – the Angel of Mean Green Christmas is here!
I’ve been a member of this board since June of 2004. In that time I have never set a profile picture. Why? I don’t know. I just never got around to it. However, that all changed last week.
It Friday, December 10th 2010, when I noticed that a girl’s picture was appearing in my posts. She was originally called Cutie Girl. I had no idea who she was or where she came from. I attempted to change my profile picture to something else but it would not change. I finally contacted board admin Harry who was able to remove her. Now I realize that wasn’t the best decision.
Although her origin is mysterious she was well received by board members. Others posted hoping she would appear for them but to no avail. Cutie Girl only appeared for me. It was suggest by one poster that she was a stalker. If true then I can only hope to be stalked by someone like her. I now believe she was a gift from heaven to this board and I am simply the conduit for her. She is the Angel of Mean Green Christmas. They say good things happen in three and I think this proves it: McCarney hired, Canales retained, and the Angel of Mean Green Christmas appeared. Fortunately I saved the picture and she has now returned to my profile.
How long she remains is a question I cannot answer. I suppose she could choose to leave us at any time. Until that time she shall remain with us. This is my present to the GMG board.

A poster on this thread says Hines was not retained...
http://www.gomeangreen.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=58180&st=0&p=538783&#entry538783
So according to that post Quattro is the WR coach, Hines is out ... and we're still looking for two defensive coaches.

Am I the only one that thinks these two new coaches would be a shoe-in to win the Texas State Armadillo look-a-like award?

Excellent! It's all coming together. Now we just need to find that 40 year old QB and female kicker ...
