  1. The inconvenient truth is that the BCS is better than playoff alternatives. Absent a full scale playoff system, that is a system that gives at least 32 teams access to the post season and the national title, the playoff alternatives are bad ideas. The normal model of competitive playoff system is to give roughly a 1/3 of the feild access to the post-season. In college football that means around 40 teams. The status qou bowl system gives over 50 team access to the post season. The BCS "works" because it is a continuation of the bowl system that gives the most teams the most access to the most cash. Alternative playoff models like an 8 team playoff, plus a bunch of bowls essential creates two different post-seasons. The problem with these partial playoff models is they devalue the remaining bowl system.
  2. Now let's put those numbers into an actual context 2005 NCAA Attend. School Rank Avg. Utah State 112 10,896 SJSU 111 12,506 NMSU 110 12,557 MTSU 106 14,526 ULM 105 14,617 Nevada 102 15,076 Idaho 101 15,175 LA Tech 98 16,416 UNT 97 16,446 UL-L 95 17,591 Ark St 93 18,381 Troy 90 19,425 Boise 77 30,112 Hawaii 72 32,735 Fresno 62 39,307
  3. The pro-WACers are misinformed on the conference's payouts. The out going members (Tulsa, SMU, Rice, UTEP) had to give up a big portion of their last payouts, this included UTEP basketball tournament cash. The incomming members (Idaho, Utah State, New Mexico State) not only had to pay a hefty entry fee they also had to agree to reduced payouts for multiple seasons. So had UNT taken the plunge to join the WAC at the same time our on the feild performance also took a dive then we'd be in a real tight spot. Boise's BCS cash will only off set one of these unbalance payout years.
  4. Both sides have valid points? This debate is pretty one-sided; the pro-WAC people blather about reputation, anyone who knows anything about UNT points out the obvious faults, and then the WACkers continue blathering while never responding to the criticism. Increased travel cost and decreased payouts are reason alone to end this debate. I also say the reputation argument is false. Mid-majors make their own reputation, not their conference. Marshall got respect playing in an empty MAC. Boise State has succeeded inspite of the WAC. I call B.S. on this rep rubs off argument. Are New Mexico State/Idaho/Utah State viewed as a better programs now than when they were in the Belt? Being in the WAC has nothing to do with those programs reputation. And here's one more argument the WACers can't answer, why would NT want to give the WAC mroe access to its recruiting base?
  5. One more reason the WAC is a bad idea: The WAC doesn't have even payouts. The new schools won't get the same money that the existing schools get for another season or two. So not only to you have the increase travel cost you don't get the increase payout to cover them the first 3-4 seasons. When the current round of uneven payouts end, LA Tech will be shopping for a new conference.
  6. Um... Yeah they did & shouldn't your practice facilities mirror your gameday conditions. Maybe also include a 12-yard maker but don't replace the 10 yard maker.
  7. So it's fair to say everyone on the board expects a better record in 2007 than 4-8, and to be contendeding for the SBC title after three seasons. And as for 23's question of what would I have expected from DD? Nothing, I didn't think DD should return after two losing seasons following four bowl seasons. I wasn't against the firing so much as I was against the tasteless comments made on the board. I'm also not sitting back and waiting for Dodge to fail, just so I can say "I told you so" to a bunch of fools on the internet. I'm just trying to get a read for the what the fan base expects from the new coach.
  8. The goal for the team is always the same; win your conference, win as many OOC games as you can. In 2005 my expectation for the team was another bowl game. In 2006 my expectation for the team was a winning record and a must win game against SMU. In 2007 my expectations for the team are 6-6 and a must win game against SMU. What are your realistic expectations for Dodge and the team next season?
  9. Wow! Dodge might be able to land a high school coach from a school with a crappy record, what can't he do? I'm excited to see what the future might hold for UNT, but the way people on this board are acting like giddy school girls is just embarassing. I'm holding Dodge to a lower standard than what I would have held DD to for next year; that means a winning record and a win against SMU.
  10. CFN reports \\December 8, 2006 Rodriguez to stay at West Virginia Statement from Alabama Athletic Director Mal Moore: “I received word this afternoon that Coach Rodriguez has chosen to remain the head football coach at West Virginia. I fully respect his decision and wish him the best. I want to remind everyone of what I said at the outset of this process: my only objective is to get the best person available to lead the Alabama football program. I remain determined to bring to our program a proven head coach with impressive credentials. While I am hoping to conclude the search soon, following a timeline is not my main priority. Hiring an outstanding head coach to lead our players is the most important thing, and that will continue to be my only objective.”
  11. Sure you can it worked at Colleyville. The top 10 richest school distict win a majority of all UIL awards. We all know you can't buy championships, but there is no doubt money makes it easier to obtain championship.
  12. Why that system? I agree that if the NCAA makes the change to a playoff they need to replace the entire post-season system, but here' a few things to consider: -most post-season are designed to allow about 1/3 of the feild to move on. -why are there first round byes? Teams are already rewarded by their regular season record with seeding. -why 2 rounds of home feild advantage? Again teams have already been rewarded for their records by seeding, why are you know giving teams a cash advantage. The bowls take place on neutral sites for a reason. -Sponsorship. Who's going to sponsor the different rounds? To you really expect Wyndam to sponsor a bowl in Norman where they don't have franchise.
  13. Dodge has experience building D1 football programs? Didn't see that on the resume. And lets not for get the top 10 richest school districts win the majority of all UIL awards. The number 1 criteria for the new coach is personality. Remember its the HC job to smile, shake everyone's hand who comes to the game, and have an open door policy even durring practice. After all its his job to make each and everyone one of us feel like were the most important person in world.
  14. Didn't South Lake hire the same guy that inked the deal between Colleyville & Dr. Pepper?
  15. The sky is falling! The sky is falling! We're having to wait a full 30 days to fill a coaching vacancy as a result of the state law.
  16. I definitely want Larry Coker on our coaching staff and I would support him 100% if hired as our Head Coach. But, I would be absolutely ecstatic and totally confident in the decision to hire him as OC/Asst.
  17. This ain't playstation, there's no conference slots available. The Big East isn't breaking up. The Pac 10 & Big Ten aren't going to 12. Boise and their crappy academic standards aren't going to the MWC. The SBC is a good conferenc and its a good conference for UNT.
  18. Why do you think a high school coach can recruit at all? That's the one part of job Dodge has no real experience in. Also how long to you expect that high school cred to carry over? Past the first crush against OU? Past a lost to Akron or Air Force? And if you think SLC has so much pull why don't you ask recruit from Houston what they think. Or better yet a kid from Duncanville. Dodge maybe a good coach, but SLC succeeds because they have resources other schools don't, and everyone knows it. The top 10 wealthies school districts win over half of all UIL awards. Its possible to buy success in high school. Better equipment, extra coaches, special camps. Dodge might be a great college coach, but why should UNT take that chance? If were trying to become a next level football program, why not get someone with experience at next level programs?
  19. I love how people ramble about Texas ties, but don't get why RV is talking to a Southern Miss guy. Have you ever hired anyone before? You put the ad for the position, then you start talking to people. That usually means starting with people you know. I love my team, but I hate our fans.
