  2. Sports Guy I think the point SUMG was making (& others) is that this is year 5 or 6. When do we start winning? (excluding home games against lower division schools) All I read about, with the freshmen, are words like "Effort", "Potential" "Upside" etc etc. You either come in as a player or you aren't. Juco kids should be expected to come in with a bang. Never doubted Stewart's work ethic, and others, in this latest class. I apologize if I often come across as bashing the kids. I'm dissapointed with the sense of urgency to win, by signing a class of prospects/role players in year 5 or 6. Impact freshmen are all over the place. (not in Denton) If you review the NBA drafts, you will notice that most top HS kids just skip college altogether. (and perform well their freshman year in the NBA). Locally, our own Chris Bosh, played 1 year at Ga Tech before playing 1 year in the NBA. He's an NBA all-star in year 2. FW Dunbar's Jeremis Smith is an impact player at Ga Tech this year. The NBA all-star roster will be full of guys that went right to the NBA after HS. (or 1 or 2 years afterwards) The NFL draft will will be full of underclassmen. (More if the rules would allow them) I can better understand the argument that our freshmen may not be ready to play at UT or Ok but we are not at that level of talent yet. With summer leagues for high school kids and extended tournaments, it's not asking too much for these kids to excel right away as freshman. We are just having a difficult time recruiting the right ones to Denton. The bigger question remains, how long should a coach be given? (albeit a very nice one)
  3. Don't give up on this team yet guys! Our future looks bright; right Calvin? 2005-2006 class Harold Stewart (more fouls (4) & turnovers (3) than points (0) Lionel Brown (our shoot first point guard with 4 turnovers; 1-5 from the field) Rich Young (3 points) Harold Edwards (solid game with 6 points 33% from the field) Justin Howerton (0 points and 2 fouls in 4 minutes)
  4. Jason Howell SicEmSports.com This spring college recruiters looking for linemen will be sure to stop through Lancaster High just south of Dallas. The Tigers feature not one but two top linemen in Anthony Morgan and Stephen Thomas. Rivals.com Stephen Thomas is ready to make waves at Lancaster this fall. Thomas, who transferred from North Mesquite, comes in as one of the top defensive linemen in the state, with offers already from Texas A&M and Texas Tech and interest coming from the likes of USC, Texas, Florida St., and Oklahoma. Morgan may not be receiving the same amount of attention as Thomas at this point but the offensive lineman is rising quickly with interest coming from Texas A&M, Baylor, Oklahoma St., Oklahoma, Kansas St., and North Texas. While the two have not been together long, Lancaster coaches have seen enough to realize they have something special on their hands. "We've been noticing since we put them together that the competition is just the next level," Lancaster coach Cliff Keeling said of his two senior linemen. "He (Thomas) walked in here and they had sets the first day and they matched sets evenly. "Now Stephen's probably a little faster in the forty, but Anthony was faster in the shuttle that we put together the other day. So both of them have got a little piece of the pie, a little piece of the puzzle." For now the duo is gearing up for what is expected to be a heated recruiting process. This spring Thomas has plans to make his way out to Texas for Junior Day, while Morgan is still trying to sort things out. "Alabama March the fourth and Texas A&M on the same day so I've got to see which one I'm going to attend," Morgan said. "Oklahoma St. has a junior day also coming up soon." Anthony Morgan is beginning to attract his own attention. This summer Morgan hopes to hit the road and continue to make a name for himself by making his way to a few college campuses. "Summer camps I'll attend a lot of one day camps; because, you know I've got to get out there," Morgan said. "So I'm going to be moving around a lot, and then sticking in the weight room and getting stronger for senior year. "It's kind of too early, but I've thought of a few schools like Texas, Texas Tech, maybe Baylor. I might try to go to one out of state a couple of them out of state maybe two or three things like Oklahoma." Thomas on the other hand is mainly focusing on staying around Lancaster and preparing for the 2006 season. "We're going to see what we can do this summer and get together as a team," Thomas said. "Get stronger and faster and take that step towards a state championship. First we're going to work on a division championship and then we're going to make that step and go through the playoffs and get to the state so that's basically it."
  5. Everyone played great and we lost at home by 21 points (in front of 5,000) Lord help JJ if anyone ever has an off night!
  6. Tanner is no Jamario Thomas but his signing, along with Williams, would be a big boost to UNT for future prospects in Southern Dallas County. In recent years, we have not come close to this talent rich area: (3-4 mile radius) Dallas Carter HS Dallas Kimball HS Duncanville HS DeSoto HS Cedar Hill HS Lancaster HS UNT Dallas billboards (in the heart of the area) are sprouting up all over the area.
  7. John Talman Rivals.com Football Recruiting Several schools are playing the waiting game with three-star Robert Williams as the Dallas (Texas) Kimball defensive end is preparing for his big decision. Rivals.com Robert Williams, according to his father, is still undecided. Things got interesting this past weekend as the No. 36 weakside defensive end took a last minute trip to North Texas with one of his teammates. This comes after the 6-foot-4, 200-pound future college defender said that his list had been narrowed down to three schools – Iowa State, Washington State, and UTEP. His father, Robert Williams Sr., says that things are still somewhat open. "He went to North Texas, and when he gets back, we're going to try and sit down to decide where he wants to go," Williams' father said. "He and his teammate went out there this past weekend and when he comes back, we've got to talk." Williams' father says that there is no leader at this point and it appears that more schools could be in the mix than once originally thought. His last reported top three though appears to be in the best position at this point. Rumors also were circulating last week that Washington State may have had a bit of an edge, but the father says that his son is still deciding. "We don't know where he is at with the decision, that's why we need to talk about it," Williams' father said. "It's up in the air right now. We'll have something in the next few days."

  10. Must have counted at least 12 folks with UT s**t on!
  11. I don't know why we need to try to find excuses for a UNT loss. USA was the better team. They were able to beat U of H when we could not. They now lead the series against us 10-3, 8-3 in Sun Belt games and have defeated us 4 straight times. Our guys played hard, but we are just not talented enough to seriously contend for a Sun Belt title. (Despite playing at home in front of 5,000) Not necessarily ready to pull the plug on this season, but it aint going to happen this year. I'll continue to come out to support their efforts. JJ has some bigger bodies coming in next year and hopefully Ben Bell is better at the point and Collin Mangrum will be a better consistent dual threat coming off the bench (as a 2 or 3) than what we have now
  12. Williams has informed schools that he will only sign if he is allowed to play basketball as well. (his favorite sport)
  13. Mangrum scored 45 of his team's 59 points in a road victory over Gunter last night. (59-52) Translating HS game minutes (32) to the NBA's 48, Mangrum would have scored approx. 68 points with NBA minutes. As of last week, Mangrum lead the Metroplex in scoring at 28.2 ppg. He has since scored 32 and 45 respectively
  14. Besides Quarterback and the Offensive Line, the Defensive Line was a major weakness and dissapointment in 05. Dickey will probably redshirt the entire freshmen class. Where's the improvement on the D Line? I'd like to see 1-2 Juco (impact) players to come in in the fall. Looks like again, we're going to load up on TE's & DB's. I see alot more of the same (defense on the field too long) unless the DLine is addressed (In a major way)
  15. http://www.aggieathletics.com/coaches.php?SID=WBB&CID=130 Don't remember if they hired Judy Buckles or Tina Slinker over Blair but I knew it was a huge mistake at the time. Blair was very interested in the NT job but not even afforded an interview (seems our AD had his mind made up and preferred a woman) Buckles, if you recall, married Corky Nelson. (Souce: Gary Blair - he told me so)
  16. Bell's shot at buzzer lifts San Jacinto past Jacksonville Ben Bell broke the hearts of Jacksonville College Jaguars players and fans alike, when he knocked down a jump shot at the buzzer to give the San Jacinto College Ravens a 68-67 Region XIV Conference win at Curtis Carroll Field House Wednesday night. The Ravens (10-6 overall, 4-4 in conference) inbounded the ball with just 12.30 seconds to play in the game and worked their way up the court. After a couple of passes, San Jacinto reached its end of the floor and Bell got the ball in the corner. As the final seconds ticked off the game clock, he dribbled around just long enough to create space and get an open shot to win the game. “It’s tough,” Jacksonville College head coach Greg Young said of the loss. “You feel for the kids. They are the ones that played their fannies off and played so hard, and put themselves in position to win, and made all the plays that they could make. “They (the Ravens) just made a good shot on us. What else can you do? You have got to get ready for the next one. That is all you can do.” -- Jacksonville Daily News Through December 10, 2005 FIELD GOAL PERCENTAGE (At least 50 attempts) Player . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 17. Blue Zetuche TexasHoops.com Recruiting Analyst For the second time in less than a week, SMU has grabbed yet another player from the 2007 class from the Dallas Metroplex area. This time SMU picks up a versatile foward that can go inside and out. 6'7" Alex Malone from Mansfield Timberview has made his pledge to join Jonathan Sloan as a future Mustang. The soft spoken Malone talks about his verbal commitment just minutes after leaving the basketball gym. "I committed to SMU earlier tonight," said Malone. "It was an easy decision because of location and I like the coaches." Malone goes on talking about the basketball program at SMU and what he liked about it. "SMU is a very athletic, quick, strong team that I feel that I fit in." Malone leaves no doubt that he will be ready to play at the Conference USA level by the time the fall of 2007 rolls around. "I was told that I will have the chance to play both the four and the three position. I feel that I perform well from the wing. My strength is my outside shot, and then get the defense off balance and penetrate. I do need to improve my ball handling skills and I work on that daily." Along side of Malone was his father, Otis Malone who was a big part of his decision making process. "I am really pleased with the opportunity to see my son play college basketball close by," said a proud Mr. Malone. "Coach Tubbs and his staff treat their players very well and you can tell how much they love basketball and their players." Timberview is 1-1 in district with eight games left to go and Malone has a few goals for his team. "We are focused on winning district and our next step is a trip to state." Malone is planning on studing engineering at SMU. Texas Hoops Analysis: Malone is a long and lanky athlete who can run the floor and finishes well on the move. He is a good leaper, can finish at the rim and has long arms. He is a nice rebounder and shot blocker and can put the ball on the floor from 12 feet and finish. He will need to get much stronger for the next level but has the time and frame to add the necessary weight. Talk about it in:
  18. Add: 2006 McDonald's All-American (nominee) to Mangrum's resume (although there are more than 2,000 nationally)
  19. TexasHoops.com Recruiting Staff After persevering through all the controversy surrounding his transfer to South Oak Cliff, Ronnie Morgan has emerged on the basketball court in a big way. The athletic 6-foot-7, 210-pound has fit right in with his new teammates, and has given SOC a tremendous second option after Darrell Arthur. Morgan got some college recruiting interest in the fall, but decided to wait things out just in case something else came up. From all indications, it has. "The season has been going really good so far," Morgan said. "We just beat Kimball the other night, and we're ranked like number two or three in the state. We're about to take off to New York to play a game too. It's been great." In addition to the team doing well, Morgan has had his share of highlights as well. "I'm averaging about 15 or 16 points and about nine rebounds," Morgan said. "I had a 40-point game earlier this year too. My role is different now. The team depends on me to score more, instead of just rebounding and defending." The increased offensive production has no doubt caught the eyes of college coaches, many of whom have made the trip down to South Dallas to check out SOC's talented roster. Morgan almost wasn't available to be recruited - he had offers from and took visits to schools such as Louisiana Tech, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, and Western Illinois in the fall. He's still considering those schools but is open to newcomers - and recently a school from a high-major conference has sent overtures. "Right now I'm planning on visiting Michigan after the season," Morgan said. "They want someone who can come in who's big and strong. I'm pretty sure that they're going to offer me, and Coach Amaker is coming down to talk to me soon. If they offer, I might just jump on it." Morgan noted that he's also been hearing from UNLV a lot lately and is certainly listening to anyone else who might want to call. It's still a little early though and he certainly wants to concenrate on helping SOC win another 4A state title. Keep in touch with TexasHoops.com for the most up-to-date information on his college recruitment. Texas Hoops Analysis: Ronnie is an athletic and strong paint player who uses his body well in the lane. He is a lefty who finishes well on the low block, has good spring around the goal, gets easy buckets with his active body in the paint, runs the floor very well and is a good rebounder. He is a physical player who will compete on defense and fight for loose balls. He is raw on the offensive end and as he improves his low post game, he will be a tough player to defend. Talk about it in: The Message Boards Note: Ronnie is having a great year and replaces former 6-9 SOC and Baylor signee Kevin Rogers very nicely. Correction on Tx Hoops' Analysis: Ronnie is right handed. Brother J'Misson "Bobo" Morgan is a 6-10, 265 lb Soph center at SOC. Not fully developed yet but should be a force by his senior season.

  22. Blue Zertuche TexasHoops.com Recruiting Analyst Richardson Pearce's 6'8" Jr. post player, Jonathan Sloan made a verbal commitment earlier this week to attend college near home. He won't have to travel far to hit the campus of SMU in the fall of 2007. After taking an unofficial visit to North Texas and one to SMU, it was a decision that just felt right. "I chose SMU after talking to my family," said Sloan. "We felt that it was the best place to go." One thing that stuck out in Sloan's mind on his unofficial visit was the way that coach Tubbs conducts himself during practice. "On the court coach Tubbs is really positive with the players, and is a good coach." With a record of 3-3 in district play and stuck in a four way tie for third, Sloan feels that consistency is the key to winning. "We go on long streaks during the game and make our shots," said Sloan. "Then we let the other team go on a streak of their own to get themselves back in the game. We need to be more consistent on both ends of the court. Sloan clogs up the middle for Pearce, but feels that with some time and practice he can develop into becoming a wing player. "The SMU coaches haven't said where they will play me, but I can play the four for them. I need to work on my strength and ball handeling skills and then maybe I can play the wing." Sloan is not sure what he will study, but he is interested in coaching. Texas Hoops Analysis: JONATHAN is a very smart post player that plays hard and is scrappy. He has a big frame and takes up space in the lane. He likes to score on the block and has good footwork and hands. He will rebound and is a good passer from the high post.
