  1. Bill Blakeley was fired. New coach Tommy Newman felt that Spud didn't fit his slow down style.
  2. I've never heard of a guard, at any level, at any time, averaging 57% from the floor. I hope like hell this is accurate. Where's "Downtown" when we need him? Buford and/or Oldtimer, what's your assessment of the roster? (2-deep) Thanks!
  3. My name is Harvey. Received a BBA from North Texas State in 1978. Met my wife of 23 years at NT. My oldest son, Brandon just completed his freshman year at UNT and is currently working and attending summer school in Denton. My hobby for the past 30 years has been following high school sports in the Dallas area (football, basketball & track) Since 1978 I have made as many NT football & basketball games as I possibly could. Grew up in Dallas and was a huge SMU fan as a kid. Have been in the banking business for over 22 years as Bank Manager, Business Banker and Investment officer. Currently employed with JPMorgan Chase in Dallas. Deceased mother in law also received her BA & MBA from NT. Thank God for this message board. Over the years, I felt that I was the only alum in the metroplex who gave a damn about UNT.
  4. Similar to last year, a record number of quality International players are expected to dominate the 2003 draft. This draft is deep, tall and athletic. The Mavs, though picking at the end of the draft, should pick up a great prospect. Additionally, Mark Cuban will make a run at Clipper free agent center Michael Olowokandi. Miami Heat's Alonzo Mourning and/or the Jazz's Karl Malone. 5. Most of these guys played in the 90's. The list goes back to the early 70's. Alton Lister, Dallas Madison is the oldest. I can't believe I left off: Larry Johnson, Dallas Skyline, UNLV & NY Knicks DeWayne Scales, Dallas Carter, LSU Vernon Smith, Dallas Carter, Texas A&M (Deceased) Rynn Wright, Dallas Roosevelt, Texas A&M (Carl Wright's Bro. & Bracey's uncle) Ricky Grace (Wilmer Hutchins) is the all time leading scorer overseas in the league he has played in. Since the posting, Chris Bosh (Dallas Lincoln & Ga Tech) has declared for the NBA. (Should go in the top 10) Dallas Carter's Andre Emmett has also declared (Texas Tech) Dallas Kimball's Quinton Ross (SMU) should be a late 1st round pick or 2nd rounder in June. I also expect Duncanville's Ryan Randle (Maryland) to be drafted in June.

  9. Thank you Buford! Actually, I really didn't realize this Hawthorne kid played at Hastings. I saw them defeat Dallas SOC in the finals of this year's Dr Pepper tournament. This kid can play! He hit NBA 3's all night.
  10. Move over Little Joe Hamilton; step aside Weasel Johnson. Marquis Mitchell is coming to town. Happy days are here again! We should all be happy that PV didn't beat UNT out for this prize recruit. Our program is really on the rise. Marquis actually cancelled trips to SW Mo. St, Manhattan and Montana. The Greater Baton Rouge area is now the mecca of high school basketball. Now that we all have been educated about the top Juco programs in the country, our coaches should camp out annually in places like Sedalia Mo. and Mineral Area. Despite half of UNT's roster developing their skills at southern Dallas Rec Centers, we shouldn't think that these center are a great place to see talent. I wonder if our top recruit Mike Jones (MCC) has spent most of his summers playing in these sames centers. (just a few blocks away from Lancaster, Tx) Does anyone really believe that any of these Juco schools could compete with the National Champion Dallas Lincoln squad? Speaking of going way back, didn't Latwell Sprewell play at Moberly like 10-15 years ago? Can we talk about some modern day talent at Mineral Area? If you haven't noticed, most great high school players are electing to straight to the NBA. (Not Juco) Chris Bosh is projected to be a lottery pick if he comes out this year. Quinton Ross of Dallas Kimball was the player of the year in the WAC. Jeryl Sasser (Dallas Kimball) was an NBA first rounder. UNT's Chris Davis (Dallas Kimball) was 1st team Sunbelt. The Duncanville girls team defeated one of the top Juco women's team this year. Please don't compare the talent of Dallas/Ft Worth area to places like Mineral Area & State Fair Mo. Downtown, I like you! The basketball side is too quiet.
  11. Lighten up Downtown! Posting what I read on another board (that some 6-4 kid chose PV over UNT) is not false information. PV and other SWAC schools were actually better than our 02-03 squad. Frankly, I was being nice by comparing this Mitchell kid to Jerome Rogers. (On paper) Jerome's numbers were much better coming out of high school and the D1 level if JJ would keep him on the floor. Jerome is a shooting guard playing the point. (combo) It sounds like Mitchell is also. Both are in the 5-10 - 6-0 range. Jerome can also explode with points in bunches. Rogers is also the quickest guard we have and would also average 2-3 steals a game. Moreover, Jerome played against some of the top competition in the state (Dallas Lincoln, Dallas SOC, Dallas Kimball & Ft Worth Dunbar to name a few) State Fair Mo Community College didn't really play a final four type schedule; going up against the likes of Moberly, Three Rivers, SW Mo. St (West Plains) and Mineral Area. Like I said previously, I hope I am wrong about this kid, however, I can only base my opinion on what we have done prior to now on the recruiting front (Ty Thomas, Lee Green, Ron Harris and Scott Roniger) Degrate actually committed to Trilli out of high school. Does the signing of Mitchell upgrade our talent? At the least put us on par with other Sun Belt schools? I invite you to any southern Dallas area Rec Center to find other Mitchell types who are as quick as TJ Ford (Thurgood Marshall, Beckley/Saner, MLK Center or Singing Hills) We have to do a better job recruiting. Mind you, we passed on Spud Webb. (not the current regime) SMU passed on Larry Johnson. TCU passed on Kenneth Lyons, UT passed on Keith Langford. Professionally, the Mavs passed on Karl Malone. Hell, Portland passed on Michael Jordon There's an abundance of proven talent in the area for us not to have to reach for kids.
  12. Granted I have not seen this kid play but how can we be impressed with him on paper. His bio is very similar to Jerome Rodgers. I believe Jerome will be a Jr as well. At least he has been in the system 2 years. Why do we need a scoring 6-0 combo guard? At this height, I prefer a true point guard with T J Ford quickness. I don't see how we have upgraded the point position. I noticed on another board that we lost out to Prairie View on another kid. (also considered SWTS & Sam Houston) Where's Vic Trilli when we need him during this time of the season? Oh well, I hope like hell I'm wrong.
  13. Thanks Oldtimer! Good stuff! You and Buford keep me lurking on this side.
  14. Roster looks good on paper! Does anyone know how recruiting is going? What positions? How many scholarships? Transfers/Walk Ons? Other than Masters, anyone with eligibility that won' be back? Go Texas Longhorns!
  15. Dandrick plays the 2 guard position. With a great need at PG, I can't see us going after a juco at the same position as Hopkins. Isn't the Watson kid a 2 as well?
  16. Island Eagle, have you seen this Watson kid play? Have you had a chance to see the 2002-2003 version of the Mean Green? Just curious to know if you think this kid is better than Ty Thomas and Ron Harris. Hate to see another 6-5 type that may not beat out what we have. Does anyone know what this other early signee at MCC is doing? (out of Lancaster High) Thanks!
  17. This team is void of a big time player. We have some talent, however, most of these guys are role players. On a very good team, none of these guys would start. Yet alone, get significant playing time. Unfortunately for the team, Chris Davis is having a terrible senior campaign. He is a turnover or bad shot ready to happen. I agree with other posters, JJ is not getting the job done on the recruiting front. I know about the Injuries; they are a part of the game. When I looked up the other night and saw Boxell and Chiles at the guard positions, I couldn't imagine this was D1 basketball. Bring on the LSU kid! If the guy can play, I welcome him. If he can't, then we need to stay away from him. This team is playing like Darrell Dickey's first 2-3 years. (the crowds have been understandably disappointing) If this program doesn't improve soon, JJ may need to borrow a page from Trilli's book of how to free up scholarships. Can you tell I'm a little frustrated? Jerome Rodgers is your point guard Johnny! Let's look to other options and/or sit Chris Davis down when he is playing poorly. Go Tampa Bay!

  20. I hope most poster don't really believe that kids sign with UNT because this is their first and only love. Ask coach Fran if he and other coaches aren't constanting looking for better situations. To Erskin's credit, he took a risk by walking on at UT opposed to taking another sure scholarship at another D1 school.
  21. Metroplex Champs (2002-2003) Oops, SMU just got another rebound! Guys we need help bad under the boards. Outstanding game by Jerome Rodgers. This kid grew up tonight. Clearly, the best point guard on the floor. Good game by SMU's Q. Ross, the only legitimate pro prospect. (Dallas Kimball ) I won't name names, but I was truly dissapointed in 3 of our guys. Oops! UNT just commited another foul.

  24. All the NBA experts felt that he would have been the #1 pick in the 2002 draft if he had left school (yes, ahead of Yao Ming). Can't disagree about his parents, however, their situation is totally different than 99.9% of most families. I would imagine that it would be difficult for me to delay a 20-30 million dollar signing bonus when I had never had any money. They still offer GED programs don't they?
