New North Texas Mean Green head coach Eric Morris announced a handful of hires to his coaching staff in Denton on Wednesday, including the addition of Texas LonghornsDirector of High School Relations Chris Gilbert, who will serve as the associate head coach/tight ends coach. It’s the first on-field coaching role for Gilbert, who spent nearly two seasons on the Forty Acres serving as a key conduit to high school coaches in the Metroplex in addition to building relationships with recruits, especially during on-campus visits. A graduate of South Oak Cliff in South Dallas, Gilbert had a long and successful history as a head coach in the Metroplex. No offense man but do you not understand that teams said the same thing about Houston and UCF and Cincy when they joined the American which was on the heels of the Big East walking away from football? They said all the good teams were leaving your league and so you suck etc... The truth is, Tulane is a top notch program in the top 20 and will likely stay there with Fritz at the helm. SMU is SMU but they have tons of money and history... UTSA could be big and they are consistently top 25.. UAB is stout year in and their basketball team may be the best in the league... I agree Charlotte and Rice are nothing special in football but each brings certain good aspects like Rice academics and Charlotte's location TV market... I think Memphis may be on the cusp of a P5 move.. You seem like you want to take away what the America has done which is propel teams into bigger leagues. They also are the only G5 conference that had a team in the playoffs which is big. Please stop trying to downgrade our new conference or at least be fair with your criticism.

Arkansas is expected to host tight end transfer Jake Roberts for an official visit on Jan. 4. Roberts, 6-5 and 250 pounds, announced plans to transfer from North Texas and enter the portal on Dec. 20. He has since received offers from Arkansas, California, Baylor, SMU, Nebraska, Indiana, Oregon State, Rutgers, Tennessee and others. He was a consensus 3-star prospect in the 2020 class coming out of Norman (Okla.) North High School. He chose the Mean Green over offers from Air Force, Colorado, Eastern Michigan, Memphis, Tulsa and Missouri State. Roberts is humbled that he has received so many offers since announcing his transfer. “It’s been crazy," he said. "It’s one of those things, I thought I would get some interest but to have the level I have right now, it’s pretty cool. I didn’t have that coming out of high school. I’m bless to be where I’m at and have to make a really hard decision. I know I’ll make the right one.” He had 28 catches for 394 yards and 3 touchdowns this season. He had 43 receptions for 542 yards and 3 touchdowns during his career at North Texas. Because he announced his transfer during the dead period, Roberts will have to wait to travel to schools during the Jan. 4-8 window when transfers can officially visit schools. “The timeline is so much shorter,” said Roberts, who has two years of eligibility remaining. “Only a couple of weeks timeline now. It’s lot different than it was coming out of high school." SAN ANTONIO — North Texas men’s basketball junior forward Abou Ousmane scored a career-high 37 points and grabbed 11 rebounds Thursday night to lead the Mean Green to a 78-54 Conference USA opening victory over UTSA at the Convocation Center. Ousmane dropped 37 points on an efficient 15-of-19 shooting. It is the most points scored in a single game by a UNT player since Roosevelt Smart scored 42 at Rice on Jan. 13, 2018. “Give UTSA credit, because they kept us off balance early,” said UNT head coach Grant McCasland. “We traded punches with them early in the second half but settled in defensively and got some separation. But Abou was phenomenal.” Ousmane’s 37-point performance surpassed his previous career-high of 23 and is tied for the 18th most points scored in a game by a UNT player. “We were way more efficient tonight and Abou made the simple play and had about as good of a performance as we’ve ever had from the forward position,” McCasland added. As UTSA’s defense limited looks for North Texas’ guards Tylor Perry and Kai Huntsberry Thursday night, Ousmane attacked the rim and finished with finesse. Every time he went up for a hook shot, layup or dunk there was no doubt that it was going in. Even the shots that hit the rim took a good bounce and found its way into the hole.
