  1. If it ends up working out, this is a big coup for Vandy. Malzahn is just what they need, IMO. Vandy needed some young blood in the program to get things going. Malzahn shows how things don't go according to plan sometimes. If you remember, Arkansas hired Malzahn largely because they thought it would sew up the recruitment of Mitch Mustain and a couple of his teammates from Malzahn's high school team in Springdale, Arkansas. Four years later, Mustain is the third string QB at USC is has accomplished pretty much nothing in his college career and Malzahn has gone from OC at Arkansas to OC at Auburn and now HC at Vanderbilt.
  2. The New Mexico program is in a bad place. They badly need to move on and rebuild with a totally new coaching staff. Mike Locksley might be the worst head coach in college football. Not only is he not winning, but there are stories of him getting in verbal spats with assistants and a general lack of organization in the program. His buyout would cost roughly $1 million. The school has flat said they can't afford it and boosters obviously aren't putting up the money.
  3. I think Mullen is the early favorite. Pat Forde of ESPN says not to sleep on Bob Stoops either. He has kicked the tires on a few jobs in the past, most notably Notre Dame last year, but he hasn't driven one off the lot since OU. I can't see Gary Patterson leaving TCU. Sometimes a coach and a school are just a good fit. I think Patterson is that way with TCU, much like Chris Peterson is that way with Boise State.
  4. I completely agree. I watch way more meaningless bowl games than I'd like to admit. If you wanted to cut down the number of bowl games, though, I would think there is an easy fix. Someone correct me if I'm wrong or way off base, but I just think the minimum sponsorship requirement to get a bowl game needs to be upped. You know when companies like Beef O'Brady's and uDrove (or uDrive, or whatever it is) are getting bowl games, you might need to raise the standards. I think there would be two benefits. First, you might cut out some of the smaller bowls that consistently struggle with attendance and interest. Second, you can raise the payouts given to the participating schools. Schools shouldn't lose money just because they sent their team to a bowl game, but it happens.
  5. Really looking forward to this 30 for 30. I've enjoyed the films with just a couple exceptions.
  6. Skladany is a good coordinator. He got scapegoated last year at UH. The defense was bad and so he got the axe. This season, with more talent across the board on the defensive side of the ball, the UH defense got worse. I'm guessing most UH faithful would have Jon back no questions asked.
  7. I'm not sure Leach to Miami would work. He seems like the type that has to be in a perfect situation. Leach and Tech were perfect for each other. I don't know if that relationship can be recreated anywhere else.
  8. I'm actually a fan of the pro combat uniforms, but unfortunately, Nike chooses which schools it gives these uniforms to. Other schools that have Nike as their provider, Houston and Memphis, come to mind without any research end up with very bland uniforms that end up all looking the same except for color.
  9. Big day for the Mean Green! Keeping Canales on board is a huge coup. Looking forward to seeing how things play out next season.
  10. That's a television viewer nightmare. I watch way too many random bowl games. More than I'd like to admit. That, however, may be one I skip. I agree with the earlier poster that said that UTEP travels well. I would agree. With no pro sports (or other colleges) near El Paso, the city really supports their team. They travel really well when they come down to Houston to play UH or Rice.
  11. I don't think McCarney would continue to actively recruit the player, but if the player still insisted on following Mac to UNT, is he going to turn him down? With that being said, I doubt that scenario comes to fruition.
  12. Interesting that Peter King comes out and refutes the reports even though everything seems to be heading in that direction. The choice of Gruden for UM struck me as odd on both ends. For one, Gruden has never been a head man at the college level and for Gruden, I would have thought that he would want back into an NFL head coaching job. It looked like there would be plenty of head coaching jobs to choose from as well. Maybe the labor unrest scared him off of that.
  13. Classy response given the situation. Here's to hoping that he finds another head coaching job or sticks around to coach the offense.
  14. I think it's a solid hire. I don't think McCarney is a home run hire, but I think he is a hire with a low floor. He isn't going to be a complete whiff like the hiring of Dodge was.
  15. Texas has been a little bit up and down so far this season, and that would make me pretty nervous if I were a UT fan. That was one of the traits of last year's team when they never did quite put it all together.
