  1. Undergraduate college enrollment is continuing its years-long decline, though at a much less drastic rate than during the pandemic. According to preliminary data released Thursday, U.S. colleges and universities saw a drop of just 1.1% of undergraduate students between the fall of 2021 and 2022. This follows a historic decline that began in the fall of 2020; over two years, more than 1 million fewer students enrolled in college. "I certainly wouldn't call this a recovery," says Doug Shapiro, who leads the research center at the National Student Clearinghouse, which released the preliminary data. "We're seeing smaller declines. But when you're in a deep hole, the fact that you're only digging a tiny bit further is not really good news." The declines in undergrad enrollment were felt across all types of institutions, including private non-profits, four-year public schools and for-profit colleges. Community colleges saw the smallest declines – only a 0.4% enrollment loss compared to fall 2021 – thanks in part to increased enrollment among high school students who were dual-enrolled and freshmen. That's really good news, as community colleges were the hardest hit during the pandemic, with enrollment drops in the double digits. read more: https://www.npr.org/2022/10/20/1129980557/the-college-enrollment-drop-is-finally-letting-up-thats-the-good-news

  3. Came here to play in big games, now three in a row – how much fun are you having? Gabriel Murphy: A ton of fun. You know, that's why we came to a Power Five, to play in games like this, like you said. This one coming up's a big one, they said it's supposed to be a sold out game so we're very excited, and like you said, that's why we came here, and hopefully help the team. Grayson Murphy: Yeah, always wanted to go to Oregon, so we'll get the chance. College GameDay being there, it's gonna be that much anticipated, that much more fun. And, you know, I'm just excited. Chip Kelly said anything about the environment? Grayson Murphy: Yeah, yeah, yeah, they're playing crowd noise out here and stuff like that. We know it's gonna be loud. And then coach Kelly, coming from there back in the day, he was talking about how the atmosphere, the stadium kind of bounces noise off it and back into the stadium. So it's gonna be loud, that's really what he's been pressing on us. Any road games like that at North Texas? Gabriel Murphy: Probably the closest, I would say, is UTSA, cause that was a big rivalry. It was always like, we beat them for the conference, they'd beat us for the conference, so that was a big game for us. And last year, they was ranked No. 15 in the country, so all the fans came out, and that's probably the biggest game I've ever played in. 4. Each summer coaches take note of players who have a chance to see their recruitment take off. Down south in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, Alex Cotton seems to be a prime candidate that fits the mold. A 6-foot-5 swingman by way of Lewisville (Texas) Hebron High, Cotton’s game has caught the attention of a handful of programs throughout the high school season and he has enjoyed the initial attention this past season. “Coaches came to see me practice before the season started,” Cotton said. “The first thing the coaches recruiting me always say is how I can shoot the basketball really well. I also feel I can guard four positions on the floor and am really versatile.” Cotton currently holds one lone offer from Troy, but the high major interest is there for him to capitalize on this spring. Since the start of the season, Cotton told 247Sports that he hears from Clemson, Creighton, North Texas, Oklahoma State, and Stanford. 5. Grant McCasland Age: 45 Current position: North Texas head coach (fifth year) Past experience: Arkansas State head coach (one year), Baylor assistant coach (five years) Salary: $600,000 Buyout: unknown McCasland has emerged as one of the hottest mid-major names in this year's coaching carousel because of his success at North Texas. A season ago, McCasland led the Mean Green to their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2010 and their first ever victory in the Big Dance. North Texas upset 4-seed Purdue in the round of 64. McCasland's success in Denton hasn't been limited to a single March run, however. When McCasland took over the North Texas program in 2018, the Mean Green hadn't experienced a winning season in five years and had just bottomed out at 8-22 in Tony Benford'sfinal season. During McCasland's first year on the job, he led North Texas to 20 wins, a mark the team has reached in each of his five seasons except last year, when it played a shortened schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2019-20, McCasland led North Texas to a 14-4 record in Conference USA, which earned the Mean Green their first regular-season conference title in 31 years. They would have entered the conference tournament as the top seed had it not been canceled due to the pandemic. A year ago, North Texas wasn't quite as successful during the regular season but won four games in four days to win the conference tournament title and earn a bid to the NCAA Tournament. North Texas then went 24-6 overall, 16-2 in Conference USA to win the regular season crown again this year before losing to Louisiana Tech in the league tournament semifinals. It will be a No. 2 seed in the NIT. read more: https://missouri.rivals.com/news/candidate-profile-grant-mccasland
  6. Ree Drummond and her husband Ladd Drummond are parents to five kids: Alex, Paige, Bryce, Jamar and Todd Fans of the Food Network's The Pioneer Woman are probably familiar with star Ree Drummond's five kids — if they're not regularly appearing on the show, the culinary author is writing about them on her website. Unlike his home-schooled siblings, however, Bryce attended Pawhuska High School. He began his football career there, playing as the school's quarterback. According to his school, as a senior he completed between 233 and 308 passes, leading to 59 touchdowns for his team, which had an undefeated season. By the time he graduated in December 2020 (one semester early!), he had offers from Purdue, Texas State and Tulsa, though he ultimately committed to the University of North Texas. Ree wrote of her son, "Bryce is really happy, and Ladd and I couldn't be more excited for Bryce that he'll be able to continue playing football — and we're so proud of him for all the hard work that got him there. Excuse me while I go cry for four hundred years." read more: https://people.com/parents/all-about-ree-drummond-kids/
  7. DENTON, Texas – UNT Vice President and Director of Athletics Wren Baker has announced promotions for Jessie Gardner and Alic’a Oliver as well as the addition of veteran administrator Stephanie McDonald to the department’s staff. “I am excited to announce these changes to our department staff,” Baker said. “Jessie and Alic’a have shown themselves to be integral to our department and I look forward to seeing their impact in their new roles. We’re also fortunate to have Stephanie joining our department. She brings a wealth of experience from roles in athletics and on campus which we will benefit from.” Gardner has been promoted into a new role as Executive Senior Associate AD/Senior Woman Administrator. She previously joined the UNT staff in September 2021 as Senior Associate AD for Leadership and Culture Development following a seven-plus year stint at Alabama. After serving for the last 18 months as Associate AD for Compliance, Oliver has been elevated to Senior Associate AD for Compliance and DEI. She has been on staff with the Mean Green since 2018 and also spent time in compliance at Tennessee and LSU. McDonald joins the UNT Athletics staff in a new position of Senior Associate AD for Administration. With more than 25 years of higher education experience, she most recently served as UNT’s Interim Associate VP for Administrative Services on campus. McDonald also held positions in college athletics for nearly 20 years including her final post as Southland Conference Associate Commissioner from 2007-17.
  8. Seth Littrell | North Texas Total compensation: $1,897,500 Although making nearly $2 million is nothing to sneeze at outside the world of college football, North Texas’ play on the field lately doesn’t even justify Littrell making that. Hovering around .500 with a losing record in each of the last three years would be pink-slip time for most coaches. Plus, Littrell has lost all five of his bowl games. He came into 2022 with the oldest starting quarterback in the nation with a chance to make some noise in Conference USA. Should the Mean Green fail to show significant progress, the buyout would be $1.575 million if he is relieved of his duties on Dec. 1. 10. The Pioneer Woman host's family gathered at the University of North Texas to cheer Bryce on It was a family affair at Ree Drummond's son's football game this weekend! As Bryce Drummond took the field as part of the University of North Texas football squad, his mom, 53, father Ladd, and sisters Paige and Alex joined the crowd in cheering him on. Alex posted a string of photos of the Drummond crew in their green attire as they watched the game play out. The photos appeared to be from the Oct. 1 home game against Florida Atlantic, which North Texas won 45-28. Bryce's team is currently 3-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play, per the team's schedule. Along with some football and heart-hand emojis, Alex appropriately described the crew at the event as Bryce's "fan club." He responded in the comment section with an "ayeee." Alex's husband Mauricio Scott could also been seen in the fam pics, being just as supportive of his brother-in-law as the rest of the family. read more: https://people.com/food/ree-drummonds-family-has-a-mini-reunion-at-son-bryces-football-game/
