SMU’s season opener could not have gone worse. The Mustangs were outgained, outplayed and outcoached in Saturday night’s 46-23 loss to North Texas at Apogee Stadium in Denton. “Everything that could go wrong went wrong,” SMU head coach Sonny Dykes said. SMU’s offense looked out of sync for the better part of the night. It started on the first drive, when the Mustangs went three and out after two penalties and a sack. Five of the Mustangs’ six first-half possessions ended in punts. On four of those drives, SMU went three and out. By the end of the first half, the Mustangs had just 24 total yards in the first half and only 46 by the end of the third quarter. “We never could get anything going,” Dykes said. “We couldn’t get on track. It just seemed like we were sluggish.” Ben Hicks’ struggles echoed those of the Mustangs’. He was under pressure all night long and had trouble throwing accurate passes to his receivers. He only completed three passes for 27 yards in the first half and threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown by North Texas’ Kemon Brooks to put the Mean Green up 14-0. We had the ball 3 times as long as the ponies. We more than doubled their yards offensively. And held them to 4 yards rushing.

Here are the factors I would put into play: * We were the better team last season * UNT recruiting classes are rated significantly worse over the past 3 seasons than SMU. They aren't building a great team through recruiting to plug holes from graduation. SMU has a much better talent line coming in to fill spots. * UNT has a GT kicker. They have a transfer eligible now on one of the lines. And that is it. SMU has added GTs at RT, 2 WR, DE, DT, and 2 S, all of whom are fighting for starting positions. They also have a transfer from A&M who is a starter and 3 JUCOs who are fighting for starting spot. SMU has definitely upgraded the team across the board. * UNT graduated a big player at RB, and have unknowns to fill that spot. Defensively, they graduated easily their stud in the secondary, and have unknowns to fill. SMU graduated two great WR, and backfilled with transfers from P5 schools. A great center and plugged a JUCO and KU RT. A great DE and plug in a P5 transfer. Some okay DT and plug in a P5 transfer and have highly regarded recruits coming of age. UNTs offense is going to be as good as it was last year, and their D is going to be as bad as it was last season. SMU's D is going to be much improved, and I think SMU's offense, while losing two great playmakers, is going to still be good. I'll take SMU to win straight up. I might take the under, because as the game moves along, I think SMU will run the ball a ton and eat clock. BOCA RATON — After months of searching, Lane Kiffin has finally found his graduate transfer quarterback. Former Arkansas and SMU quarterback Rafe Peavey has officially joined the Owls as a grad transfer and is immediately eligible to play. Peavey was cleared shortly before Tuesday’s practice and took reps with the first, second, and third-teams. “We’re always looking for people,” Kiffin said, “and we had looked for a while for the right fit of a quarterback due to numbers once Jason (Driskel) left.” Peavey, 22, was a perfect four-of-four for 116 yards and a touchdown in three games last season. A former three-star recruit from Missouri, Peavey transferred to SMU in 2016 and mainly served as Ben Hicks’ backup last season. Redshirt junior De’Andre Johnson is currently battling redshirt freshman Chris Robison for the starting quarterback job. Kiffin said the addition of Peavey is “not any reflection upon” Johnson and Robison’s performances. Morris is getting serious looks at Tennessee... if he leaves it would not shock me to see them go after Seth. UNT (9-3): Too high for Seth Littrell? Maybe if you aren’t paying attention. Littrell will be on a lot of short lists this time next year, just watch. In year one at a moribund program he got the Mean Green to a bowl game. In year two he has them playing for a conference title. An off-shoot of the Mike Leach coaching tree, Littrell had success at Kansas (no, seriously, Kansas used to be respectable), Tech, Arizona, and UNC before heading to Denton. With an athletic department firmly in his corner and plenty of untapped resources, he has North Texas heading in the right direction in a hurry. I would absolutely take him over the guys below, I mean, he has UNT primed for a ten win season just two years after going 1-11. Though Scott Frost gets all the love, and deservedly so, what Littrell has done is almost as impressive. The American Athletic Conference unanimously voted Friday morning to add Wichita State as a league member for the 2017-18 season. Wichita State is expected to accept the AAC's invitation and leave the Missouri Valley Conference, where the Shockers have been members since 1945, sources said. Wichita State will join the AAC in all sports, except football, giving the AAC both a 12-team football and basketball league. The AAC has 11 all-sports members (Cincinnati, UConn, East Carolina, Houston, Memphis, South Florida, SMU, Temple, Tulane, Tulsa and UCF) and Navy is a football-only member. Wichita State has not had a football team since 1986. Because of Wichita State's basketball success, the Shockers were an attractive target for the AAC. SMU has announced the hiring of assistant basketball coach Shawn Forrest. Forrest most recently spent the past three seasons as an assistant at Western Kentucky. Forrest was named a UTSA assistant in May but left for Louisiana Tech just two weeks later. Forrest then bolted to SMU. SMU had an open spot on its staff following the resignation of Hall of Famer Larry Brown and promotion of Tim Jankovich, who will over as head coach this season. Forrest also has experience as an assistant coach at Louisiana-Lafayette, North Texas, Arkansas State and Florida A&M. It's no surprise that demand for an expansion berth in the Big 12 Conference has two dozen or more universities queuing up with last-lifeboat urgency. A chance to join a "power-five" conference, with all the cache and revenue that go with it, is increasingly rare. So if the Big 12 wants to add two or even four schools, why not Southern Methodist University? If you've examined the lists of top contenders -- Brigham Young, Houston, Cincinnati, Memphis, Connecticut and Central Florida, among others -- you may have wondered what happened to Dallas' university. Since the Southwest Conference dissolved in 1996, SMU has found homes in three minor conferences, most recently the American Athletic. Many of its SWC rivals combined with the former Big Eight to create the Big 12 and, in a bit of irony, put its headquarters just outside Dallas in Irving. Big 12 championship games and tournaments have filled AT&T Stadium and the American Airlines Center. The region is laced with enthusiastic fan and alumni bases from Texas, Baylor, Texas Tech, TCU, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Kansas and former Big 12 member Texas A&M. In fact, that's one of the arguments used against SMU, that the Big 12 owns much of its turf already. Yet that's also a potential weakness in Houston's bid, and that didn't stop Texas' governor and lieutenant governor and University of Texas president from publicly backing the Cougars. What SMU offers the Big 12 is a stronger case to consolidate a top-five U.S. media market around one power-five conference. That unified presence would only increase penetration and market share in a market that truly matters.
