Kickoff Cookout Set for July 30

DENTON, Texas - North Texas athletics announced Monday that the preseason Kickoff Cookout will be held Saturday, July 30 from 5-7 p.m. on the West concourse at Mean Green Stadium.

The event will feature an opportunity for the public to get inside the new, state-of-the-art stadium, and view the club, suite and lower bowl seating locations as well as all the amenities the stadium has to offer.

Those members of the Mean Green Club that have already chosen their seats will be given the opportunity to sit in their reserved seats. Seats that are not currently reserved will be marked and available for purchase at the event.

Representatives from the Mean Green Club and the North Texas Ticket Office will be on hand to answer any questions and assist those who have not chosen their seats for the upcoming 2011 season.

The new Mean Green Team Store and ticket office will be open throughout the event.

Fans will be able to purchase$1 hot dogs and soft drinks. Other beverages will also be available.

North Texas spirit squads will be on hand as well as the Mean Green bounce house for kids.

Athletic director Rick Villarreal and head coach Dan McCarney will address the fans at 6 p.m.

  2. I just got back from the new stadium. The Denton Main Street group put this event on. It was very well attended, but was more local business people as opposed to Mean Green fans. Early on, we were told that there was still some construction going on and that the tour would be limited to the deck. A deck tour was not what I came for.

So after a bit of whining, a pick up tour was arranged for 2 Club Level seat couples and my wife and me.

We started at the delivery and recycling area and worked our way up. We got to the suites and our first stop was the President's Suite. It's a douoble wide and I mean that in the good way. We saw a regular suite and then went down to the Club Level.

My wife and I got to sit in our actual seats and they're great. Not looking for something to complain about, but the railing is a bit high for me. I'm about 5'9" and if I don't sit up straight, the top of the rail is going to be an issue for me. However, in light of all the people that keep falling over railings at sporting events, well, I'm just going to sit up straight. My Mom will be proud.

Next, to the Ball Room part of the Club Level. We were told it has capacity for 300 people and there's a bar and buffet that you already know about. The very tall windows to the west allow a view forever. The people we were with were convinced that they could see the wind turbines in St. Jo, Texas (?). Who knew.

Down to the Lower Bowl we went. I noticed there is a greeat deal of room between rows (my knees-your back). I also went to the first row and the view from there of the field is less obstructed that from the Club Level. Sitting on that first row, I almost got the feeling that I was sitting too close to the field. Great sightline.

I was told that the small scoreboard (little mama I'm told)is actually bigger than the scoreboard at Fouts. The big board (big mama-really, that's what they called them) has some kind of super resolution. The volume level has only been tested using "white noise" so far. Further tests are scheduled for later this week. All the PA speakers are mounted in Big Mama.

The floor in the concourse area is not just poured concrete. It's patterned and we were told it is supposed to look like a "bird's nest." An "avary" I suggested. The fan store is very nice an is part of the ticket office. They look separate, but one leads to the other.

One other bit of news I forgot in my original term paper.

I was told last night that we had a naming sponsor on line and that an announcement would be made within 7 days and that the name was one I ( as the 'man on the street') was familiar with. I can't tell who told me and I don't know who the proposed stadium sponsor is. Stay tuned.

I loved it. And I can't wait for September 10. Sorry for the length of this post, but there's a lot to talk

    about.

  3. Ragarding future so called "body bag" games, I'd like us to go 2 pricing levels. Option 1, $1 million each for 2 games and a return game in Denton. Or, option 2, $2 million per game with no game to be scheduled in Denton. If we can't cash in and/or get a big name school at our place, I'd just as soon play a SFA or West Texas State here and have a 6th or 7th home game.

The big name schools schedule us for only one reason. Let's make them pay.

  4. First of all, I agree with NorthTexas95. I'd like to beat them both. And I think it's possible. But since we live in Texas and Houston is in Texas, and both the Dallas Morning News and Houston Chronicle are in Texas, I'd rather beat Houston. Again, given that I have the power to choose, and I do, I say we just beat 'em both. That way there's no problem.

  5. M-Movement?-The WAC already made a play for North Texas, and wisely UNT turned it down. The SBC is no longer the lowest ranked conference as the WAC is struggling, and the MAC is the next target in the pecking order. If conference commissioner Wright Waters can negotiate a “creative” and more lucrative TV deal after 2012, and the members don’t chase the quick buck, the SBC could be the most stable non-BCS conference in the country. Who would of thought?

Who'd of thought it indeed. ?

  6. I spoke with a physician yesterday whose Mom still lives in Ames Iowa. My doctor friend lives in Denton. He says every time he speaks to his Mom, she asks aboout "Coach Mac." He told me the story of her having a difficult time of loading groceries in her car at the "High-V" supermarket. It was Coach McCarney that came over to help her. She thinks he's "the best ever." And she hopes he does well at North Texas.

    Me too.

I didn't catch when or what channel. Do you suppose the 'Dillos are back on the field ? Is Coach "Straight Arrow Guerro back at the helm ? And what about those smartty pants Texas Colts ? Ohhh...I hate those Colts.
