  1. Pat Boone has "forever" worn white "buck" shoes. They are part of his image. The way John Lennon wore wire rimmed glasses. Or Roy Orbison always wears dark glasses.

I think it became part of his "good guy" image. I'll be disappointed if he doesn't wear white shoes September 10 and 11.

PS ...and thanks to MDH for the photo above, I'm going to wear MY white bucks to the game September 10.

  2. I was a huge Fry fan as well. But this demonstrates the Coach Fry was helping himself ("...Fry, you're out of your mind. We're going somewplace else."). There's nothing wrong with this attitide, but Hayden Fry wasn't at North Texas for his health.

Does anyone remember who the women's coach mentioned in Silver's story would have been ?

(And the dance team was called the North Texas Dollies.)

  3. Like Cooley posted earlier, I too, just sat in my seats looking at the kids playing in the turf. It was hard to believe I was at NT. This place is like that really great place you've visited in the past. The difference of course is that I was at MY home stadium.

There were so many people there yesterday, we had to wait in line to get in the elevators. And once I got up to the Club Level, I was reluctant to wait in line to go back down. Thereby, I didn't get to hear Coach Mac or Rick V. But I did hear the cheers that came up from those that were able to hear the speeches. If I could critize anything about yesterday, it would be that the speeches be broadcast on the PA system. And perhaps show the speech on the Mean Green-a-tron.

A great day. I took 3 guests and they were all astounded. "I had no idea that North Texas had anything like this."

Great job Rick V. You've really given us something to be proud of.

Now Coach Mac, it's your turn.

  4. Back to the topic, I was please to see that Coach Mac bought a home in Denton. I think if he is really going to sell NT and Denton, he needs to live in Denton. Coach Mac, by my estimation, has done everything right since arriving back in January (?). He's paying taxes and making a contribution to the City.

    Thanks Coach McCarney

  6. Actually what I said was that I "bought" my season tickets. But I didn't pick them up. I recall that my tickets wouold be mailed when they were ready. And out of town game tickets cannot even be paid for yet. Bring your money Saturday, but don't plan on picking anything up.

  7. It's 5:00 Wednesday afternoon. I'm listening to KLUV Radio and a spot comes on with War's "Why Can't We be Friends" playing in the background, the announcer says something to the effect, "Whether it's purple and white, crimson and blue or Good Ole Mean Green..."

We weren't first mentioned, but we were the only one with "good ole.."

  8. And for the record, I think the Green Brigade does the very best version of the National Anthem of any college band I've heard. The National Anthem is done respectfully and the stylized America the Beautiful introduction make the GB arrangement the best, in my humble opinion.

Welcome back to North Texas Pat Boone

  9. I did something today I've never done before. I bought my season tickets at the new ticket office in the new stadium. The ticket office is within the Mean Green Fan Store and the store was being stocked as I bought my tickets. I told the lady my name and she acted like she knew me, which was nice. She knew what seats I had picked and except for my looking around and asking a thousand questions, didn't take 2 minutes.

The Fan Store is going to have polo shirts, t-shirts, Mean Green branded footballs, green oven mitts, shorts and sweats. Just like a really well stocked store in the mall. Except that everything says Mean Green.

Athletic Dept. employees were bringing in display furniture off a big truck and most of the merchandise looked like it came from the NT Bookstore. I was hoping for a green polo. Later.

I'll come back Saturday for the Mean Green Cookout and find something green to buy.

PS...I tried to buy "away game" tickets as well. Those are not available yet. Hopefully, I was told, they would be ready after August 8.

  10. When I was growing up, I spent a lot of time with my grandmother and grand dad. They had a "record player" but not a whole lot of records. They were all 78 rpm and were about 1/8" thick. Artists included Gene Autry, Al Jolson, and my favorite, Pat Boone. I played "Love Letters in the Sand" and "Bernadine" over and over.

We also went to the Pat Boone Country Inn on Highway 24 (now University Drive- Highway 380). Back then, west highway 24 WAS in the country. I always hoped to catch a glimse of Pat Boone at his restaurant. I never did. I'm looking foward to seeing this music legend both at the game and at the Sunday show.
