  1. Tulsa peeps, one poster suggested TU ran up the score, another questioned 4th and 1 late. Of the 23,000 there, you might find 50 that thought you ran up the score.

It was the worst I have seen a NT team play in many, many years. That includes our 65-0 humiliation to the Horns last year.

Did I walk away impressed with Tulsa? Kinda. Glad to see you have improved your lot in the football landscape lately.

I am so disappointed that our overall talent base has actually DECREASED over the past 4 years given our success and improved facilities. I just don't get it.

  2. Back in the day when we had a good I-AA squads, we would bring in 17K against Abilien Christian in the home opener.

    Why?

Because not only was it the home opener, it was the first game period. We hadn't been throttled yet by a top 10 program at their place. People will come to watch the Mean Green at Fouts when hopes are high.

I am so out on BCS at their place openers. I do not know if it is financially possible but can't we just eliminate the BCS powerhouse at their place as an opener period. How about opening the season at Fouts against an SFA, Sam Houston or Texas State.

Why do we have to be someones tune-up game? If we have to have a BCS heavyweight on the schedule, mandate it be later in the season. Doing that game so f's us on attendance.

I would like to see the following:

Home opening tune up against SFA, S.H.S.U., Texas State-every friggin year open at HOME!!!

1 or 2 home games against SMU, La. Tech, Tulsa (nice job Rick). Based on whether we have 3 or 4 home Sun Belt games that year.

    3-4 Home Sun Belt games.

Could that be 6 home games?

    Away games we play:

1-2 SMU, La. Tech, Tulsa's of the world

1 body bag game, prefereably a BCS program on their ass that is still willing to pay.

    3-4 Sun Belt games.

That gives the away contest tally at 6.

Just curious, would you rather see us open up against LSU in Baton Rouge or Texas State in Denton? We get 500K to travel to Baton Rouge and incur those expenses or we can reasonably expect 22K in a home opener against Texas State (I know what you are thinking about 22K against Texas State but it is not a crazy notion). I have no idea how that translates into bottom line dollars but I think it could be made up in increased attendance the rest of the year that we lost after a 65-0 thrashing from Texas.

  3. I would argue that "Execution" is "learning" when it comes to a play in football.

Why run it if the whole team can't execute it?

BTW: I am not speaking out of my realm of knowledge on this one. I was near the team for the whole game. I wanted to hear what was being yelled, the reactions of Van Malone and Dickey's handling of the young QB.

Here I am ... football as a head. Courtesy of Fanof49. It isn't like I wasn't at the game and only watched it on television.

Yeah, what you said, kinda, but not exactly. I really, really was not trying to attack you, just the silliness of an arguement you made that I have heard here before. It didn't buy it then, and I don't buy it now. You've bought it. Good for you. Here is what I know 1) I like that you add to the board. 2) I like to read your posts. 3) I love the fact you traveled to the game and were up close and personal. 4) You are a nice guy. 5) I met you while standing in line for the port o potty at Fouts. 6)You do look like John Denver.

I would argue that "Execution" is "learning" when it comes to a play in football.

Well I would argue that arguement is better left to our "recruit a stoner" crowd.

Why run it if the whole team can't execute it?

And for that matter, why make your bed if you are just going to mess it up again tonight.

BTW: I am not speaking out of my realm of knowledge on this one. I was near the team for the whole game. I wanted to hear what was being yelled, the reactions of Van Malone and Dickey's handling of the young QB.

I beleive you. I beleive you and that scares the living s%$# outta me.

Not a bad look for you at all!

  4. Here is the problem. It is a complicated NEW play. Not the good ole, run left, run right or run middle variety. Meager and Thomas showed that they didn't understand the new plays completely. Thomas lined up on the wrong side of Meager on a running play and it resulted in a busted play. Cobbs had to explain the formation when JT, PC and Stickler were in the play all at the same time. Meager ended up calling a timeout and went to the sideline for more help.

I think they will work these formations into the rotation slowly. I like it that way better anyhow... let's not put the cart before the horse.

It's a freaking football play dude. We have known that we would have 2 special backs in the same backfield since week 3 of LAST year. So does Meager get to check off to his second receiver in his junior or senior year? We actually expect the players to go to class AND learn new plays? And most importantly, what if a player puts on his pants 2 legs at a time?

Please, please, please don't tell me how hard it is to learn a freaking football play. Execution, now that is a different story.

  5. I was VERY impressed with PC last night. I too was concerned with the lack of rythym because of the split time. Patrick has such great vision and makes so much out of bad situations. He is a bonafided threat out of the backfield in the passing game.

Even though it was not a 200 yard rushing performance, I think his NFL stock went up last night.

He was clearly the best player on the field last night. IMHO at least.

  6. Gloom and Doom....."so sorry for them" blah blah.....this is crap

every year teams win and lose just like this....nobody "hands us the game" heads up play and good effort by young players won this game.

WE EARNED EVERY BIT OF THIS GAME...

The better team won....let's let it carry over to next week.

Right on the money. Better athletes/teams don't make forced/unforced mistakes/turnovers. The MUTS might have great athletes but UNT has great football players.

  7. IF we don't lose any more starters for next year, we have 18 returning. That includes Mr. Lineberry.

On offense we lose Cobbs, May and possibly Lineberry.

I think Venegas is pushing May, Jamario is pushing Cobbs smile.gif and nobody pushing Lineberry-I hope he's back.

On defense we lose Miller, Hutchinson, Covington, Branch.

I don't know what to say about this group. Do we have any bodies left at DT to be pushing Miller? Hutchinson may not be starting by years end.

Don't we have like 9000 DB's on scholarship to be pushing Covington and Branch?

I would have felt a lot better about this season if the DT's had panned out like I had wished. It would have also been a good looking future.

Here's to Sky Pruitt, Monty Stevenson, Chris Miller and Joseph Miller helping us forget T.J. Raymond. Get well soon Issac Thomas!

  8. maybe this 2-5 you saw was just a variation of the 3-3-5 they run: I wouldn't be suprised if they brought up one of their dbs and took a lineman and dropped him back a little.

That may very well be the case. Since I am not familiar with their personell I was judging by size. Two hogmollies down, five bad-a linebackerish looking guys standing 2 yards behind the hogmollies. Some plays the LB's would cheat up real close to the line of scrimmage like a DE, sometimes not. They always had at least 2 of the LB's rush/shoot gaps.

It reminded me of what Corky Nelson might do in that situation-find a scheme based on talent available. I am intrigued, I'll ask over on the Memphis board.

  9. I was watching the 4th quarter of the Memphis-Ole Miss game and saw an interesting defensive scheme employed by the Tigers. The had 2 DL and 5 LB's. The DL's would tie up as many blockers as they could and 2 to 5 LB's would blitz the gaps.

It was pure genius for a team short on debth/talent on the DL and strong on debth/talent at LB.

Is it something we might consider?

  10. It could have been the private sector. I think the guy is underpaid. I think DD is underpaid. I think both could take jobs in the private sector making more.

]"I do my job,” Villarreal said. “I don’t base it on money. There’s been chances for me to leave this institution for more money, but that’s not what I’m about.”

He would not say what other universities offered him employment"

Either come clean or don't say anything at all. Tired of this kind of talk.

  11. But after the 65-0 thrashing we took at UT last year, nobody wants to put their heart into this game - so our season starts with most of our fans the next week at the MUTS.

My thoughts exactly. If we pull an upset, great. It is very unlikely we will because of the style of ball Dickey employs. It is hard to upset a team like LSU without a tricked up offense. Not having a tricked up offense for high caliber BCS teams is ok by me as long as it works for the Sun Belt, La. Tech's and Tulsa's of the world.

I think Dickey is very shrewd in what he is doing. I am aware of our lack of OOC success. I still believe we are recruiting better athletes and truly building a better PROGRAM. It takes time and I see progress. I think we have seen success in recruiting because of our success in the Sun Belt. Throw in the improvement in facilities (which will be another 4 year process) and we will see what that has done for us. I absolutely loved this last recruiting class.

Do I think we will see the same style of football being played in another 3 years? No. Why? We will continue to improve as a program and have the athletes to better execute an offense that 1) Still dominates the Belt or competitive in CUSA and 2) competes better with some BCS teams.

There are those that point to the success that Hayden Fry had but that was 30 years ago and the landscape of college football has changed drastically. What applied then does not necessarily apply now.

So I ask you this: Are we better off than four years ago?

  12. Green Flag selects Chad Rose. Could be a 4 year all Sun Belt team selection at center. Since I am so nurturing, I would also like to adopt the Diet Coke Dude if that is within the rules. Harry, can we have a ruling on this?

  13. My suggestion is to go to a Golfsmith , Edwin Watts or Galaxy Golf and try some. If they feel right, buy them. A new set on Golfsmith.com is listed at $199. Great price! I have some of the idea iron i-wood hybrids (3 & 4) in my bag and love them. They replaced my 5,7 tight lies woods. I have always liked their products.

  14. NMSU traveled well to our place but now they're gone. (We were their closest Sun Belt rival) They must have brought 3K to Denton with the conference championship on the line in 2002.. ULM and ULL have been well represented usually bringing 1000 folks. ASU comes in third. Notice that the closer they are the better they travel to Denton and more likely they have a sizable alumni base in the DFW area.
