OK.... so when I see him at the bar, would he prefer that I get up and yell, "THROW THE BALL" or "THAT'S YOUR PENALTY, DICKEY," instead of a friendly "Hi Coach?"
No, you should say "throw the ball f'er" or "that's your penalty, f'er!"

Did you notice that South Alabama is seeded 14, while Northwestern State out of the Southland is also seeded 14. Is the SunBelt just a glorified Southland?
No, not even close. The Southland has 11 teams and we played SFA (finished 4th) and Nicholls State (finished 11th). We were head and shoulders above both in size, speed and talent. The Sun Belt is also an 11 team league where we finished 7th. The difference between the Southland and the Sun Belt in the Sagarin rankings is pretty close to the difference between the Sun Belt and the Colonial in basketball. The Colonial put 2 teams in the NCAA tournament and 2 teams in the NIT. We have a long way to go but it's not like the Sun Belt is keeping us down or anything. The Sun Belt was a step up from the Big West which was a step up from the Southland.
Southland-1 NCAA bid
Sun Belt-1 NCAA bid and 1 NIT bid
Colonial-2 NCAA bids and 2 NIT bids.

If I remember correctly, last year's score was in the single digits or close too and we all know how our defense didn't step up last year. So I don't think we can measure our defense based on our offensive performance last night.
This is the first year I haven't heard too much of "the defense is always way ahead of the offense at this point" stuff.
I'm glad to see they scored some points for a change.
What is going on around here?

But there should be no question as to who our front runner is at QB.
Ok, and you think that front runner is? This question is because you were there and I wasn't.

Please only respond if you saw the scrimmage. With Meager out, who would YOU put on the field to start Phillips or Wilson? Phillips apparantly had the better stats but was that is never the full story. Were his stats padded by Mr. Quinn and Nwigwe? Again, who would you put on the field if the season started today?
How did the OL look? Better? Same? Young guys noticably better? New guys coming in with obvious greater talent?
Who stood out on the DL? IMHO our Sun Belt reign of terror started with a solid DL . Please tell me are MUCH improved.
My observations from last year suggested that we need to improve our play at DL, OL and then QB in that order to get back to Sun Belt dominance. Yeah I want to win OOC games too but we need to get back to at least SBC dominance first.
And finally, I am a believer that young guys with true talent make a splash immediately and their superior play on the field is obvious. Brandon Kennedy, Patrick Cobbs, Johnny Quinn, Scott Hall, Craig Jones, Nick Zuniga, Dylen Lineberry and Jonas Buckles all come immediately to mind. Do we have any RS Freshman or transfers that fit this description?

That is absolutely HORRIBLE!!!
Please for the love of everything we hold "Sweet and Holy", do not buy this helmet...
I think it looks good.

I drove by it for the first time yesterday and it didn't look as bad as it appears in the pics.
Man, I hope you are right because the pictures make it look third rate. It is common for steel buildings to go up and add brick later to finish it out when the money becomes available. I hope this is the case and will reserve judgement until I see the facility in person. Better yet, I think I'll send RV an e-mail and ask him directly.

To answer your question about recruiting: He was here for one year and was responsible for recruiting 3 of the 18 we signed this year. We will have to see how they pan out as they were not highly touted but then again NONE of the recruits this year were highly touted. Such is life at good ole UNT. BTW, I think that exceeds the recruiting production of both our head coach and our OC for the last two years combined. Van was simply not here long enough to get a good gauge on him. So, basically, I have a big bag of nothing for you.

"Good news for you DD haters. Come on with us aboard the DD Wagon, the offense may look to be opening it up."
The offense is not going to "open it up." He says this stuff every year and does the same thing as he has done the last 8 years. This is not an exageration either. This is not an inflamitory post-just the facts.

"Must have been for Justin Barnett poster night... "
I acknowledge the greatness of that post.

With all of the incredible advances in modern medicine and science, I say let's go with incubating a test tube coach. He would be called Coach Uber. We take some recruitng DNA from Mitchell, some fiestyness DNA of Simon, some get up for big games DNA from Corky, and some overall program management DNA from Hayden. We might want to throw in some Tina Slinker DNA to soften Coach Uber just a bit so Coach Uber can better deal with the quirks of the modern athlete.

I coined "Pack the Pit" back in the day. I read in Sports Illustrated where some school made an all out effort to sell out their gym and did. I passed it along to the powers that be. And now you know the rest of the story.

As another poster said offense sells tickets and defense wins championships- then goes on to say that selling tickets is what matters. As a fan, I find this unacceptable and I'm amazed you believe this. I could care less about selling tickets, I want to see a winner. I'd much rather see big hits, interceptions and dogpiles as a fan than a high scoring offense. I don't care about how many other people are at the game with me. It's more fun, but what do you want to see more a sold out crowd at an 0-11 team or a 11-0 team that you care about in front of 100 people?
Huh? Care to rethink that paragraph? Selling tickets and winning are not mutually exclusive BTW.
Sorry, quote tags not working.

The game is in Denton on Saturday at 7 pm. I will be there.

Cool. Care to say why?
BJ is a talented player no doubt, if it was indeed BJ. I gotta say having him out there on that play probably cost us 7 points on a spectacular punt return. Being consistent in discipline 365 days a year cuts down on foolish uneccesary penalties. If you consistently allow it, things don't change much. The challenge is to demonstrate there is a price to pay, so when the most talented players are on the field they don't make those mistakes. The ideal result is to have the best players on the field without lacking discipline. Sometimes you just have to punish the players that punish the team. I think the end result is better.
-
All I'm going to say is that if you're going to ask the coaches to discipline players during games, you had better be prepared for having worse players on the field. That's the tradeoff.
Uh, gotta disagree there.

I have really tried to look for the positives the past few years and give him the benefit of the doubt but my nagging fears have all come true this year. He has run this program into the ground. Get him and his staff gone now! Totally, thoroughly unacceptable.

I can't get over the final step we took today in defining how pitiful our concentration on discipline is. That was the personal foul called bringing back Quinn's punt return TD costing us 7 points.
After Quinn is 50 yards upfield, Brandon Jackson? and someone else has an ASU player on his back. The ASU kid was chicken fighting, and and our guys were too. But then in steps a referee. Both NT players are laying on top of the ASU guy and the ref is standing between both NT players legs, yelling at them. The ref then bends over closer to the backs of the two NT players, grabs them by the back of their jersey and starts yanking on both of them and also yelling. At that point I see one of our guys, not sure which, just keep popping the guy with his arms, elbows and fists. For the love of God, is it not obvious at this point the play has gone completely by and there's a ref yanking on your jersey? About the time Johnny is crossing the 10 yard line the ref drops his flag. I nearly pulled every strand of hair out.
Then, to make it worse, both players finally get off the guy and comes jogging over to the sidelines (about the time everyone else is celebrating Quinn's TD)in which one unnamed coach starts to pat them on the back of their helmets as if to be congratulating them? WHAT IN HELL? Zero discipline!
This game was sickening to watch overall. ULL, MTSU and ULM looked much better than ASU today. If we have one ounce of our past 4 defenses this game today would have been a blowout. The final 3 quarters was played with ONE senior on the field on defense. Our secondary consisted of 2 freshmen a, sophomore and a senior in Branch. After visiting with the team in person, I'm guessing our D line can't average more than 230 lbs? Give us one D lineman with some strength to push upfront and draw a double team and we will be a factor in conference again. I hope we never see another season with such a depleted defense again.
By the way, La Tech got smoked by Boise St and finished 4th in the WAC today, if that tells you how far we have fallen this year?
Rick
I saw the wole thing too. I too thought it was Jackson. I have never been so pissed at a North Texas player. I have never been so pissed at a coaching staff for the total lack of discipline all season long. I have had it with this staff. I would like to point out we would be 0-11 if not for the 13 turnovers in our two "wins".

I am hearing most of the rain will be south of I-20. Let's hope!

Ok Mr. Denver, since you are seated close to the prospects every year do you have any general/specific observations? Has there been a difference this year from the last few years? And BTW, who IS the coach?
-
Seriously, how was this guy ever hired as a D1 coach?
Hey there witman mayo, it's been a long time since you have bashed the Tic. Besides the obvious, what is your problem with Vanilla? It seems like it is real personal with you.

I really, really dislike (ok, hate) SMU. I just had to share that. This game means the most to me, more than any conference championship, more than any N.O. Bowl. We MUST win that game.
