This. I'm re-watching the game and it's insane how many blown tackles we had, even early on. I'm still in the first quarter of the replay and Ott's 41 yard and 38 yard runs in the first 3 drives don't happen if our guys don't whiff. The 41 would have been a tackle for loss and the 38 maybe a 6 yard gain. Clean up the tackling and the scheme may work. Our guys were in the right positions to make plays, just didn't execute.

First, I applaud you for being able to rewatch the game. My stomach couldn’t handle that.
Second, what bothers me about this issue is tackling is a fundamental aspect of football. It’s the foundation, the bedrock, ground zero of what it means to play defense. How does this get overlooked after an entire offseason of practice?! Get low, wrap up, and tackle the player with the ball. That’s how this works fellas!

  2. I realize Coach O’s “Like Prime says, We Keep Receipts” comment rubbed some fans the wrong way. It’s brash and cocky especially after a bad loss.

However after thinking on it, the message sent is not meant for us fans. It’s for the players to see, current and future. A rallying cry for those who are in the trenches taking Twitter grenades. A “Us vs the World” approach can have a positive motivating effect in the locker room. But it has to be followed by action and results, otherwise it’s just empty bravado.

    Only time will tell. GMG.

As wild as the transfer rule is, it's still a 1 time deal, unless they are willing to sit for a year as a 2x transfer. We start landing ballers from the portal, they're basically locked in and we're ready to go.

Exactly. This is exactly why I’m so pro-portal. If we’re going to spend our time and energy recruiting players, let’s go after the ones that are locked in by the transfer rules. This is how it was before the portal became a thing. You want to transfer to another school, that’s fine but you have to sit a year. That year long waiting period makes players think long and hard before jumping ship.

I honestly don't care enough to research why he did not regain the starting job for his junior year, but kudos to him for sticking through it and finishing his degree.

Ken was diplomatic throughout the QB competition/decision and said nothing after the decision was made so I can’t tell you with 100% certainty.

But if I were to speculate… I assume it had to do with the fact that the new coach ultimately went with the guy he recruited. With the portal these days, if you don’t play your recruits early you can pretty much kiss them goodbye.

Unfortunately for Ken, he was recruited by the previous coaching staff, Derek Mason & Todd Fitch.

Nice but we had a QB transfer from Alabama and it didn't work out.  Wouldn't hurt to try but not nearly as optimistic about transfer from Vandy.

    Look closer, my friend…

Texas State QB TJ Finley played one season at LSU and two at Auburn and lost the starting job at Auburn due to an injury. Finley appeared in 18 games (11 starts) during that time, throwing for 2,199 yards with 12 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Texas State took a chance on TJ in the Portal and boy it sure paid off against Baylor week 1, wouldn’t you say?

Ken Seals’ put up the same stats during his true freshman year in 9 games vs SEC defenses. (Note: Ken only played vs SEC teams due to Covid-19, no cupcake teams to pad the stats)

    • 186-of-288 passing (64.6%) for 1,928 yards
    • 214.2 passing yards/game
    • 12 touchdowns against 10 interceptions

And just like TJ, Ken also lost his starting job due to injury.

@C Rod What are your ties to Weatherford/Seals? A post from a while back says you spent 2 years filming Seals.  Are you a pro videographer?

I'm a commercial video producer and director with a love for football and Friday night lights. Back in 2018 I moved to Fort Worth and wanted to take on a passion project. Dale Hansen had done a sports news segment profiling Ken so I reached out to his father and asked if it would be okay if I attend games and film his son.

In the meantime... better start warming up that transfer portal...

Well said. What if I told you there’s a SEC QB out there that fits the bill and will be ripe for the taking after this season? Would Mean Green Nation be interested?

6-foot-3, 218-pounds, with great arm strength. A fellow Texan from the DFW area with two years of eligibility left after this season. His college career got off to a hot start as a true freshman however his growth was derailed by a head coaching change during the end of his freshman season, and untimely injuries during his sophomore season. A weak O-line vs SEC defenses is always a recipe for disaster. Having lost the starting job and not seeing any playing time last year, many assumed he would hit the transfer portal… but he didn’t. In today’s environment, he chose the road less traveled - deciding to stick it out and earn his degree. The Athletic wrote a great article about it.

  8. This Baylor loss vs TX State could be a blessing in disguise for UNT. Baylor fans are quickly souring on Dave Aranda. Many think his early success was due to Matt Rhule’s players and he’s now on thin ice. Baylor’s schedule doesn’t get any easier and if things continue to go south, Aranda will be fired. Jeff Traylor being poached by Baylor is a real possibility. You heard it here first. #TraylorToBaylor
