  1. I was able to learn a lot about our student fee in my last post, so I'm hoping to learn some more about my school in this one. Thank you to everyone who replied concerning the student fee, I really appreciate it. I notice a lot of back and forth regarding RV. I want to know what you would do if you had the deciding vote on the BOR, specifically regarding RV. Would you keep him and why? Fire him because he's done what he can do here and it's time to get the person who will take us to the next level? Fire him because you think he isn't very good and is paid too much? Extend him and give him a raise because he's provided so much to the athletic department at North Texas? Or give him an ultimatum that it's time to start doing more and it starts with hiring new blood, much like a head coach who fires a coordinator to gain some breathing room? Let's refrain from personal attacks. It would be great to see what Mean Green Nation thinks. I know I learn a lot from reading each person's unique perspective, especially when it's thought out and fact-based.
  2. $10 per hour really isn't that big of a deal. I roughly pay $150 per semester for season football, soccer, volleyball, basketball, and softball tickets. Perhaps a bit steep for the current product... On the free market I might only be willing to pay $125 for football, $30 for men's basketball (in our current set up), $50 for soccer, and maybe $0.50/game for women's basketball and softball - but that roughly breaks even if I were to go to every women's basketball/softball/men's basketball game. I have WAY more of a problem with the $16.50/hour library fee, especially since the only thing I use the "library" for is non-library computer labs (which is already covered under the $13/hour technology fee).
  3. This is an honest question. I've noticed the topic of the student athletic fee come up several times over the past few years while I've been following this board and I've never quite been able to fully understand how it works. Please don't personally attack me too much for my inquisitiveness...because I do realize this topic stirs up emotion in some of our beloved posters. - I've read on this board before that the student athletic fee was raised by RV. I've read that the student athletic fee was raised by a poster on GMG. - I've read that the student athletic fee covers just the stadium ($78M). I've read that the student athletic fee is for $30M. - I've read that the student athletic fee ends at a certain point. I've read that it goes on indefinitely unless the fee is terminated by vote, board, etc. - I've read that we have the lowest fee in the state. I've read that our fee should be raised to the state maximum. I've read that it can only be raised once for $1. As you can see, many times I've read conflicting statements and it was hard for me to know the "truth" so I decided to do some independent research before asking those with a much better memory and grasp of the situation here on GoMeanGreen. From my research, I found that only 14% of students voted at the time, and the majority of those students never paid a dime of the fee because it kicked in three years later. This article http://texashistory.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metapth145624/m1/1/was one of the best resources. It states that the fee is for "half" of the stadium costs - Q1: is that $30M (half of the originally projected $60M) or $39M (half of $78M)? Q2: "After the stadium is paid for, the fees will continue to pay for other athletic programs." This statement is located in article above. Does the fee end after the stadium is paid? or will it continue to pay for "other athletic programs"? Q3: from my research it appears that Texas and Texas A&M students do not pay a dedicated athletics fee, so it doesn't appear that we have the lowest fee in the state. Is ours the lowest of the other schools? (Texas Tech, Houston, UTSA, UTEP, Texas State) Q4: Also, we're currently at $10 (stated as $7 because a student services fee was cut by $3), can we really only raise it to $11? or is the raise to a maximum possible? (It appears that the maximum allowed is $15, is that correct?) It's a very interesting topic, and if anyone can answer any of the questions it would be greatly appreciated. This is just for my personal edification and knowing the "truth" about the student fee.

  5. these guys get it and so does NIU AD, Sean T. Frazier. edit: probably not even 1/1645th. I could only dream to loom so large over so great a place as GMG.com. ...this is UNT90's world (and Harry's), the rest of us are just living in it...
  6. "Rice gets program set for sustained success" You'd have to go back 15 years to find the last Rice defense that played with such aplomb, and another 30-plus years before that to find a defense that played with such aplomb during a winning season – because winning Rice seasons are admittedly few and far between, rarer even than the Owls' occasional defensive stinginess. Yet it wasn't the offense that carried the Owls to the third 10-win season in program history, the second under eighth-year coach David Bailiff, in 2013. It was the defense: Rice finished fourth in Conference USA in total defense, trimming its per-game total by roughly 15%, and finished fifth in scoring, allowing one fewer touchdown per game. Last year's defense allowed only two opponents, both from the SEC, to score more than 34 points; five opponents did so in 2012, with the Owls dropping four of five, and a combined 16 did so from 2010-12. In the Conference USA title game, Rice held high-octane Marshall to 371 yards of offense on 4.76 yards per play – the Thundering Herd's second-worst performance in each category during an otherwise explosive season. http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2014/07/03/rice-owls-2014-countdown-preview-roster-depth-chart-schedule-football-four/12072583/

  10. North Texas 8, Nicholls St 4 and North Texas 9, Southern 0 to start the tournament 2-0 and move to 4-3 on the season vs. Northern Iowa today at 12:30, Lovelace Stadium - Northern Iowa is 5-1 and has wins over Georgia, Texas, and North Carolina
  11. http://www.conferenceusa.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/013013aac.html "The 2013 schedule has 14 playing weeks, which provides for two open dates for each team. The schedule is a one-year model, meaning that as the conference lineup changes for the 2014 season, opponents may change and locations of games for that season are not yet determined." - we might make back-to-back visits to the same locale - it IS possible that we might be hosting a team for a second year in a row - look for a possible schedule release within the next month - we will have 6 home games
