  1. I think we can finish over .500 next season if can land Brooks and Ahmed turns out to be the real deal. We need another scoring threat outside of Jordan and I think Brooks can be that guy. #callmekrazy

Is Brooks a legitimate possibility? Any other schools after him right now?
  2. And I read "let the recruiting orocess play out" as "I'm waiting for an offer from a P5."

Of course. Did my post make you think I read it differently?

My point was that other coaches in our conference coming off worse seasons and with less to pitch than us are convincing kids that they don't need to wait and that their school is the right one for them. They're making the kids think that they don't need to hold out for X P5 offer, because their school is a destination, not a backup plan. No reason we can't do the same.

  3. Another kid who Coach KP is working and leaving an impression on.

Also, we keep hearing that these kids want to let the recruiting process play out before they make any decisions. I understand that, but it's not stopping other teams in our conference from getting commits, and good ones at that.

La Tech already has 9 commits including 4 three-stars, UTSA has 5 commits and 4 three-stars, FAU has 4 commits including a four-star and a three-star, Marshall has 4 commits with 3 three-stars, ODU has 3 commits with 1 three-star, Rice has 3 commits with 2 three-stars, UAB has 2 commits with 1 three-star, MUTS has 1 commit, FIU has 1 commit, and Charlotte has 1 commit.

10 of the 14 teams in the conference (including Charlotte, set to join in 2015) already have a commit for 2015. UAB has as many 2015 commits as they had victories last year. La Tech was 4-8, but they have 9 commits and some pretty good ones.

Whether these schools hold on to all these commits until signing day is besides the fact. The point is, these coaches are selling these recruits on their program. It's also much easier to sign kids with bigger offers if they were already committed to you before those schools came in.

Early commitments can be a great thing with players being able to help recruit on twitter and in camps over the summer. As long you aren't taking marginal players. It's a step up in our recruiting that I hope we take sooner rather than later.

  4. High school highlights:

We haven't hit up those fertile Kansas JUCOs much under Coach Mac. Could be a safety or corner. Played safety in high school, not sure about at coffeyville, but that's where I think he projects best. Although hard to judge what kind of player he is now solely based on HS highlights.

With only Shilleci, Freddie Warner, and Kishawn McClain set to return as scholarship safeties in 2015, I've said from the beginning that a JUCO safety is likely. Again, not sure where the coaches are recruiting Bailey.

  5. 6'3" 280 lb offensive lineman. Plays center for Highland Park, and that is his most likely position in college, although he could project to guard spot as well. Not a brand new offer, and I think he's been at practice during the spring. 1st-team all district in 10-4A last year. Also holds a UTSA offer.

  6. 6'4" 175 lb receiver out of Bishop Dunne. Has a solid offer list, including Cal, Colorado, Illinois, Oregon State, etc. Coaches seem set on adding some more deep threats on the outside this class.

  7. Well, since it's bound to come up here anyways, Matt Joeckel of Arlington high school is graduating A&M and still has 1 year of eligibility remaining. Wonder if proximity to home and Josh Greer both make us a factor.

Joeckel started the Rice game and had 190 yards and 1 passing td in the first half, while Johnny Manziel was suspended for the first half. Other than that, not much playing time in his college career. Twin brother was the second overall pick in last year's NFL draft to the Jaguars.

  8. We've been pretty picky with our LB offers. Wouldn't mind landing this guy

Yup, and if this kid has been offered at OLB it would be a shift from the type of players we've been recruiting at OLB. At 6'1" 225 lbs as a junior, he's a lot bigger than the OLBs we have signed in the past two years. Garner and Montgomery were at or around 200 lbs when they signed and Sed Ellis and Calvin Minor were probably around 200 when they came in for fall camp.

Again, a school that runs a 3-4 could really fall in love with this kid being their rush linebacker. Not really sure where he projects best for us. At 6'1" he's on the short side for a defensive end, but he has long arms and a good build. Could project inside as a linebacker, but he likes outside linebacker.

Really like the kids film though, and I love the Atlanta area. I'd be happy if we got this kid, regardless of what position.

  9. Those bcs busting teams...utah,boise st. Hawaii, and tcu also had 7 to 9 players on thier teams that got drafted. This is not including free agents.

We will need a lot of talent to pull off something as big as busting the bcs. Add a few players that are NFL draft caliber to last years team, and we could have had a shot at busting the bcs.

I get what you are saying and I am not knocking DT as a qb. Even with a change in philosophy, you still will have to surround the qb with talent. Our personell did not fit a passing offense. Too slow.

We need an upgrade across the board as far as passing offense skills. Give DT a 6'3 wr that runs 4.4 and you can probably add 1000 yards to his total.

Looks like we may be headed in the direction of more passing with our recruits this year, but it would still take a year or more to get the depth we needed to consistiently run a different offense.

For sure. And that's why I didn't say we were a non-bus-driver qb away from crashing the BCS last year. I'm not dwelling on the past, but looking at the future with Mac basically showing us that he does want the bus-driver types going forward.

Can they get and develop the talent to have a BCS-busting type season with a bus driver? No one was able to really do it during the BCS era. Doesn't mean we can't. It'll just take a whole lot. Whether or not Mac could accomplish that should not take away from all the good he has done for us and the program.

  10. Let me start off by clarifying that I would much rather win 9 with a bus driver than go 1-11 or 2-10 with a flashy qb/offense. We can keep winning 9 with a bus driver and I'll be happy and appreciative of Mac and crew, and I think we all will. I just fear having a bus driver limits our potential.

In the BCS era, the schools that made BCS bowl games from non-AQ conferences had one major similarity, being a difference maker at qb. Utah had Alex Smith and Brian Johnson, Boise State had Jared Zabransky and Kellen Moore, Hawaii had Colt Brennan, TCU had Andy Dalton, and Northern Illinois had Jordan Lynch.

We're talking about NFL QBs (Smith and Dalton), major NCAA record holders (Brennan, Lynch, and Moore), and at least guys in the mid to upper 20s in TD passes (Zabransky and Johnson). The passing game and qb are the great equalizers of college football IMO.

Again, no complaining if we keep winning. But that, to me, is the risk you run with being a non-P5 committing to the bus-driver type qbs. Also hard to really call it a risk.

  11. Does he have a connection to UNT, Dallas , or Texas?

As soon as we offered Kelly and his teammate Quentez Johnson, the first thing I thought was that it was influenced by Coach KP. They did a decent job recruiting Georgia while he was at USF. Usually pulled 2-4 kids a class from Georgia. May or may not be the connection.

I love the idea of recruiting these southern states. No need in putting in the resources we did in Louisiana. Just offer a few kids here and there and try and get a visit out of them. Keep Texas the major focus, keep recruiting Oklahoma hard, and keep a watchful eye on the other southern states and the prospects in our conference foes' backyards.
