  1. "Scrappy" being considered too war-like - that's one of the earliest examples of political correctness I can think of.

Let me get this straight, when I was in Viet Nam that is what was going on at NTSU? The re-naming of Scrappy? I really don't know what to say.

  2. DeepGreen, I love your avitar - did you create that?

The helmet is Smity's design and I added the NT. It needs some refining. Hopefully, Smitty can create one just like it with a nicer interlocked NT. Feel free to use it as your avatar.

  3. Here is a site of old photos and information on the former Port Arthur Thomas Jefferson HS. The link I've provided shows a photo of Todd Dodge in his HS playing days, along with the phenominal Brent Duhon and TJ's coach, Ronnie Thompson. Go to the home page and click on the 1970's football section and check out the "'fros" in the team section. Also, go to the Coach Buckshot Underwood link and catch a glimpse of the Cowboys own Jimmy Johnson.

  4. One thing Perry that I think would prevent that from happening: In the case of t-shirts and other products, they have to go through all the proper licensing channels.

So, if they get approval from UNT.....UNT is going to be giving approval on the current logo. (At least that'd be my guess...anyway).

Personally, I think of those two....I'll order the one with the teams listed on the brackets (not the logo one). The reason: 10 years from now, if I still have that shirt....I can look on there, and see who all was in the 2007 tourney. With just logos....I'd be guessing as to who everyone is---for example, I have no clue what logo Winthrop or Butler have.

Why not buy one of each? Problem solved.

  5. No classes Friday. But Dr. Bataille says so much more in that email. She really understands. "In addition, I am hoping that this is just the first of many opportunities for UNT to take its place in the national spotlight!"

Those faculty members that truly see what's going on will probably cancel Friday classes on their own.

  6. After watching the excellent piece on Rich Young on CBS Evening News last night, then watching it again on the video I had taped, I'm amazed at all of the national publicity coming our way. It's seemingly endless. And then, to top that off, I pick up the local rag and on the top of front page, there is a short lead-in blurb with color picture of Rich Young. I open the sports section and half of the page is devoted to the complete article, including a color practice photo of Rich at the Super Pit. The publicity of going to the big dance is just amazing to me. I could only imagine what knocking off Memphis would mean to North Texas. I know it's a stretch, but just imagine. :pinch:

  7. ---Young's comments reminded me of a similiar comment about Tom Landry (who was a WWII pilot who flew into the Ruhr Valley, the industrial heart of Germany) . Landry was known for staying calm during games and someone asked him how he did it and he responded something to the fact: "After piloting planes through the Ruhr Valley, football games were not all that stressful".

---It brings on a new sense of importance of sports....Everyone loves to win but after it is over...everyone walks away...

My wife always says that nothing seems to worry me. I think you'll find that for those of us who have experienced military duty during wartime, things just don't seem to worry us. Viet Nam did that to a lot of veterans, the same for Desert Storm and Iraq vets. Basketball is just a game. Nothing more.

  8. I'll say it then. MEMPHIS BARBECUE SUCKS!!!!!. Anyone who puts cole slaw on a brisket sandwhich needs to be flogged. There is only ONE barbecue and that is TEXAS barbecue.

Please don't get Mempiss folks involved in a BBQ war. It really makes them look rediculous.

  9. I've often wondered if the HS students who wanted a more "school-spirit-rah-rah" atmosphere avoided going to NT for the very reason that we are having this thread in the first place. If that is the case, then what this school (in particular the spirit organizations) is left to work with is mostly a group of new students who were the disenfranchised at their respective High Schools.

Damn good point. The high schools down here live and breath spirit. At Port Neches-Groves, the cheerleaders visit all of the elementary schools during football season. They teach these 5-6-7 year olds the fight songs, etc. These youngsters then go to middle school and high school bleeding purple and white. So, it's not like they don't know what school spirit is or shy away from it. I truly believe that the reason my three daughters did not attend NT is due to it's not being on par with the aggies and frogs in school spirit. After all, I introduced them to NT when they were in their early teens. I guess those empty Fouts afternoons took their toll. God help us if 90% of all NT students were the spirit rejects from high school.

  10. Screaming Eagle touched on what I truely believe is the root cause of NT's failure to garner sustained student, Alumni, and Denton support for it's athletic programs. The "hex", known as the "elite" Southwest Conference, continues to plague North Texas. We were never in that group and are not even associated with former teams of the SWC, to this day! What we have is the Sun Belt conference, comprised of teams that students could care less about. Even in good times, our football crowds for games with Arkansas State or ULL were only 17,000 on a good day. Bring in a Baylor, TCU, or an smuT and the crowds get to the 22,000+ plus mark. Sure, hardcore fans will attend games regardless of conference affiliation. I'm talking about the borderline fan, or those students that come to UNT whose Aunts and Uncles went to TxTech, a & M, UT, TCU, U of H, etc. I'm not attacking the SBC - just stating what I believe are the real reasons people don't support NT sports like they should. And when you can't even compete in the SBC, support really dwindles. Throw in a couple of 2-9 football seasons.... Well, you get the picture.

Unless North Texas can be the conference king pin in just about all sports, we will continue to have limited support.
