  1. Though you'd never hear me say it, because I think TT is one of the best talents on our roster, this guy would be a bigger get than TT according to most.
  2. I don't think it will. Sounds like from the blog that our coaching staff is on the road trying to recruit as we speak and that this guy will be their first order or business when they get back.
  3. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
  4. Today's entry: A Tale of Two Domestics If there is one thing I have learned in five and a half years as a police officer it's that what you see on COPS is about 2% of the job. While I would love to only chase stolen cars, bust drug dealers and get in shoot-outs (ok, maybe not the shoot-outs) that's not what it's all about. I should get paid far more since I'm essentially responsible for doing the jobs of law enforcer, counselor, psychiatrist, family therapist and actor...cuz sometimes I have to act like I care when I don't. So, here's a few examples both from last night...and back to back no less. Not for children. The second call out of the box last night was a domestic disturbance with the comments "complainant requests police for argument with her boyfriend. Fears that things will escalate." I drive up and this fairly attractive lady walks out and meets me at my car. She says she is arguing with the father of her children because she wanted to bathe the 4 year old and the 1 year old at the same time...apparently daddy wasn't keen on the idea. The two of them get into an argument and the father announces that he doesn't want to be near her, sleep next to her or look at her (did I mention it was midnight?). She says "fine" and tells him he can sleep on the couch because she's not giving up the bed. She even says "why don't we just share the bed and not look at eachother?" but not dice. He's apparently been on the couch one too many times though because by the time I arrived he had taken the baby's crib from in the nursery and moved it into the bedroom with the mom...and laid himself out a blanket on the nursery floor. Why he couldn't lay that blanket down anywhere else in the apartment I don't know but now the mom is pissed because he's re-arranging the furniture. Bottom line is that a stupid argument between two pig headed adults has resulted in the baby being up late at night and the furniture being moved around. End result of this was that I told them both that this was not a police matter and I had real crime to get back to...but again, I'm also supposed to play family therapist so I pulled the dad aside. I told the guy "This is a stupid argument. If your girlfriend is willing to let you sleep in the bed on separate sides take her up on it and put the baby back in the nursery. You'll be more comfortable and besides...YOU'LL BE IN THE BED WITH YOUR GIRLFRIEND!" I did mention that she's fairly attractive, right? He was hell bent on biting off his nose to spite his face though, so I left calling him an idiot under my breath. Soooooo, I walked out to my car and before I even got the key in the ignition the tones started going off. Seems some guy had called saying that his wife had just stabbed him in the same apartment complex. I can't make this stuff up. I would usually speed off lights and sirens blaring but instead I calmly drove four buildings down. I get out of the car about the time DFD gets there and we see this guy who is bleeding from his leg. I asked the guy what happened in my broken spanish and his story is as follows. He claims he got into an argument with his wife and that she grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed him. About this time the mom comes walking out carrying the sleeping 3 year old with the 7 year old right behind. I took the kids from her and walked her back into the apartment to get her side of the story...which varies drastically from him. She claims that he came to pick her up from work and saw her speaking to a male co-worker. They get home and while she's cooking he starts demanding "who was that?!" She explains that it is a friend of hers from work and that he's over-reacting. He demands that there must be more to the story and starts banging his head against a wall (her story). She tells him to stop acting like a lunatic because apparently he has hit her in the past and even destroyed her cell phone so that she "can't be a whore." Obviously hurt by the implication that he could ever be a lunatic he grabs a kitchen knife and stabs himself in the leg...then walks into the children's room and yells "Look what your mommy did." She tries to bandage his wound but he won't have it and calls 911. Well, I walked back outside to look at this man's wound as DFD was tending to it and it's about 1/8 inch deep. If there is one thing I know from the many suicide calls I've been to...and the real stabbings...it's that a superficial wound like this is the kind you self-inflict for dramatic effect, not the kind you inflict out of rage. I tell the guy as much but he still insists he was attacked. So, luckily another officer was there with his rookie and they got the task of taking mommy to jail for aggravated assault (a felony) because daddy is a douche bag. Had the rookie not been there and needed the training I'm not sure what we would have done. Technically we're supposed to take every claim of family violence seriously but I'm not so sure I wouldn't have just taken the dad into custody for "suicide watch." The kids went to grandma's. Next time: My fun with Michael Clark Duncan's twin.
  5. True, but for a program trying to draw in any fans we can and get our name out there as much as possible why make people go to extra effort to hear about our games? I'd much rather put "NT wins" on page 5 of their DMN sports page than expect them to think "hey, I wonder how NT did last night".
  6. That's something that I would never do. Putting it out there that you don't honor your commitments is not something you want to do. If you're a new coach and you don't honor the previous regime's commits that's one thing, but if you recruited the guy to the job you still hold then it's suicide in my opinion.
  7. In a word, yes, having a good women's basketball program does help with the prestige of the overall program. Though it's not readily apparent to many, conferences don't extend invitations just based on football and men's basketball. And there is a reason that conferences give out an all sports trophy...we haven't won the "Vic Bubbas" cup yet.
  8. Not the best example. Kevin had his head so pumped up by those around him that lowering himself to play at NT was out of the question. Of course then he went on to prove to everyone what some of us in Denton already knew...big fish in small ponds don't swim so well when you put them out in the ocean.
  9. Wouldn't "niece" have saved keystrokes and confusion? (At least on my part, I had to get out a family tree to sort that out)
  10. Ummmm...I disagree. He should have said something along the lines of "I hope Dr. Bataille remembers that we're getting paid a lot of money to play this game...that m'fer!" Have we learned nothing from the Dickey press conferences?
  11. I don't to say that looked gay (not that there's anything wrong with that) but I think this would have been more appropriate for these guys: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWwyjmSbJPs
  12. Now now Rick, let's not be to demanding. We have to remember that things like "nobody cares about women's basketball anyway", "we have to save money when we hire a leader for a revenue sport", and "have we filled our quota of female/minority coaches yet?" are vital and relevant issues. Wheter we hire someone with a proven track record in our own back yard is secondary. Of course I should be careful. Apparently questioning the "why" of this hire (or more specifically the "why not" when it comes to Capps) means that I'm saying I dislike Shanice Stephens...sure, that makes sense.
  13. Not to bag on you but this is one of the misconceptions that bothers me the most. I don't care what crowd you run with, how poor you are, what your momma or your daddy does, you always have a choice. Kevin Ealey is a grown man and made the wrong choice...if in fact he turns out to be guilty. Again, not trying to jump on you in particular foutsrouts, I just get so tired of the "environmental" defense...especially when I know so many who could have easily used it and didn't.
  14. Look, this hire has nothing to do with her having a child...though if anyone can try to tell me honestly that family concerns don't weigh on your mind in your free time (and yes your work time) then they are crazy. This hire has to do with three simple things: 1)Donna Capps was already a college head coach in DFW. (Stephens' biggest "plus" is her recruiting...think Capps never recruited around here?) 2)Donna Capps was the proven commodity. She's taken a team to the NCAA tournament TWICE. (You can argue, foolishly, that we're talking about the Southland vs. Sunbelt all you want...UTA plays in a hole that can't come close to recruiting to the Super Pit if you recruit correctly) 3)Shanice Stephens hasn't been a part of big time winning anywhere that she has been. (Clemson has won 12 games each of the last two seasons) This screams "low budget" like everything we do around here. The kinds of programs that we always say we aspire to be like go out and find the proven commodities, the coaches that others want, the "sure things". Coach Stephens may not turn out to be a reach...she may go down as the winningest coach in NT history...but just like how we always hope our rivals 2* players outperform the 4* and 5* ones we're forcing ourselves to be giddy over the choice that doesn't have the pedigree.
  15. Could I please, pretty please, get on one of these hiring committees?
  16. Yes, and no. Smaller more athletic teams have competed with, and at times "eaten alive", larger teams who couldn't keep up with them up and down the court or stay with their man when he roamed further than 5 feet from the bucket.
  17. Good to see that the majority of our fans want the person who won't be hired.
  18. After back to back 20 win seasons, increasingly good recruiting and a trip to the NCAA tournament for the second time in NT's history (all with attendance that can be called "sparse" at best) can we now lay completely to rest the "JJ led teams underachieve and/or are ready to fold at any time" comments? Just wondering.
  19. That's actually the reason we don't have a stadium yet. We keep talking about the stadium and ruin the silent phase.
  20. This was how the game should have always been. A bunch of tired beer drinkin alums running around throwing and catching (most of the time) a football. Our "ringers" weren't so off the wall good that the game was no fun, and the game couldn't have been scripted to be more dramatic. I may be 0-5 but I can say I had a blast.
  21. It actually was posted nine minutes apart because I posted it, read a thread, than hit the back button (which took me back to my reply) and hit the "submit post" button instead of the "mean green football" link. I was posting from my phone.
  22. If Tune passes him up maybe Meager couls find his niche as a special teams star.
